Biden headed to Iowa for high-profile steak fry

Updated at 8:19 p.m. ET on 8/11

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Iowa next month to deliver the keynote speech at Sen. Tom Harkin's annual steak fry, an aide to the vice president - and potential candidate for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination - told CNN's Jim Acosta on Sunday.

An Iowa Democratic official also confirmed Biden's upcoming visit to Harkin's steak fry, which typically attracts a high-profile crowd of national Democrats. Its setting in the first-in-the-nation caucus state makes it a natural stop for potential White House hopefuls.

A Biden aide said the stop in Iowa has long been a commitment on the vice president's calendar after he was unable to attend last year's steak fry.

The vice president's trip was first reported by The New York Times.

Biden has not yet said whether he'll make a third bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, though his schedule this year has hinted at where his aspirations may lie.

In May, he spoke to a gathering of Democrats in South Carolina, site of the first-in-the-South primary contest in presidential nominating years. And later this month, he'll help raise money for New Hampshire's Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, though the event itself won't take place in the first-in-the-nation primary state, but rather in neighboring Maine.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, considered the Democrats' top pick for the presidential nomination in 2016 if she chooses to run, has not visited any early voting states since she left her post at the State Department in February. Like Biden, she has not said whether she'll make another bid for the White House.

And while Clinton hasn't yet traveled to Iowa in her new role as a private citizen, a group that works to elect Democratic women to public office held a "Madam President" event there this weekend with Clinton as the unspoken target.

Plenty of Republicans have visited Iowa, including Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania this weekend for an evangelical gathering.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana have also visited the Hawkeye State over the past several months.

CNN's Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.

I wonder if I'm the only one going, "Mmm... steak fry..." after reading this.

Biden will bow out gracefully, the decision has been made and he won't be on the ticket!

Why does the press always declare there is a "top pick" before voters even have a chance to cast their votes in the first primary? There is NO front runner in 2016 until the voting begins!

Biden sucks. After his anti-gun comment he'll never get my vote ever.

Well, Obama has already made us the laughingstock of the world, so his head comedian might as well be next in line...

Well, on one side you've got mostly reasonable, intelligent, educated people (the left). On the right side, we've got people stating the Earth is 6,000 years old, rape babies are gifts from God, and corporations are people too, my friend. So, are you for reason, science and good decisions, or religious nutjobbery, suppressed research, and the rich get richer, and the other 99% get poorer?

I hope he does get the nomination – it would give the Repubs a chance to regain the presidency.

Vice President Biden, I'm an Independent whose registered as a Democrat, there is only one way a Republican can not only win in 2016 but also carry the Senate, and that would be if the Democratic vote was splintered by a Primary fight. I respect Joe Biden, he's been a terrific VP and a Senator before that, however all the "hate” that President Obama has, unfairly, been subjected to will be carried into the General Election. Off the subject, just the other day there was a video of a Republican Congressman, from one of the mid-Western states, who was holding a casual meet the constituents’ sit-down, explaining his positions. Up stands a women in her 50’s or 60’s she’s holding a stack of papers and demands to know why we have a President that wasn't born in the US. Here we have a Republican supporting the President against a “birther.” For the most part, we have a democracy with un-educated or simply uninformed voters. This next Presidential Election will be funded, thanks to the SCOTUS with virtually unlimited funds. Unfortunately, a great deal of “PAC” money will be coming from the lobbies that favor “less” of everything, less regulations, less taxes, less health care, but more pollution, more Army Tanks, which the Army is on the record as not wanting, more money for Big Oil, and Big Agriculture. Please don't help the Republicans win the White House.

Uh ya, but then again if he wasn't planning to run for President he'd probably be going to the event also seeing as how he's one of the highest profile Democrats.

You gotta be kidding me! It's laughable enough that Crazy Ol' Uncle Joe is VP, but President?! Definite reflection of the populace for that even to be a consideration.

It used to be the rest of the world "didn't like us." (Supposedly.) Now, they are all laughing at us and our imminent demise, a ship of fools sinking. I'll take the former back any day.

One thing for sure we have the only president in history of our country connected to the whole world by birth. Said enough.

    @Data Driven
Proof would be in Russia granting asylum to Snowden, and other Russian acts in the UN toward the US. How about the Russians getting arms to, and protecting interests in Syria?

This President is weak and the whole world knows it.

Dear Biden, Please run. Please continue to educate us on how "the American people need to know that their leaders know what they're talking about" and then go on to continue to educate us on the remarks made by President FDR on TV following the Great Crash of 1929. (Hint to the Democrats out there: FDR wasn't President in 1929 [or 1930 or '31 or '32] and FDR's 'fireside chats' were by radio, not TV, which was only experimental at the time.) At least he was right with the first part, though, that the American people need to know that their leaders know what they're talking about...

If Bin Biden runs against Hillarybilly, the only one who could win, would be the one who is willing to campaign against Obama's disaster. Guess who that is? the clue involves lime green pants-suits. Biden has zero chance.
