Biden’s son evaluated at Houston hospital

Updated at 9:53 a.m. ET on 8/20

(CNN) - Beau Biden, the attorney general of Delaware and the son of Vice President Joe Biden, was evaluated on Monday at a Houston hospital after an "episode of disorientation and weakness," the vice president's office said.

Biden traveled with his son to Texas for the evaluation, his office added. According to a source, Beau Biden is also with others from his family, including second lady Jill Biden.

He is undergoing testing at MD Anderson, a world renowned cancer treatment hospital, the source told CNN, cautioning that Biden was only undergoing an evaluation.

Beau Biden tweeted Tuesday morning, thanking supporters for their well-wishes.

The incident occurred last Wednesday while Beau Biden was on vacation. He began to feel "weak and disoriented following a long drive to Indiana," the Delaware Department of Justice wrote in a statement.

Initially admitted to Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago, Biden traveled the next morning to the Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to speak with his doctor.

The statement said Biden was discharged and spent the weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

No other information about Biden's condition was released.

In 2010, the younger Biden suffered what doctors said was a mild stroke. His speech and motor skills were not affected.

Biden, 44, was elected as Delaware's attorney general in 2006. He served in Iraq for one year as a captain with the Delaware Army National Guard. Biden acted as a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia from 1997 to 2002.

He and his wife, Hallie, have two children.

CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

For those asking themselves "why Texas?", MD Anderson in Houston is one of, if not the best cancer hospital in the country. Pretty scary. Hope tests come back negative. Only 44 years old...

I wonder why they didn't fly him to Cuba to take care of socialized medicine? After all Biden wants that for us but not for his son? Why is that?

There's some pretty uncaring, heartless comments on this board. A young father, husband and son is quite ill and everyone should be wishing him well. Obviously since he is a Democrat there are those on the right saying some pretty thoughtless things which don't align at all with the basic religious principles in the Bible. Where are their Christian values?

His normal state of disorientation was aggravated because he drove to a red state. And he's the son of Joe, so the disorientation gene was passed hereditarily.

Not just M.D. Anderson, but the entire Houston Medical Center is one of the finest in the World. Now just watch what the government sticking its big fat nose into an industry will do to it in 20 years under Obama Care.

@ Joan – my thoughts exactly! I guess the gop 'christian' worships a different God. You know, the one that makes it okay to be hateful, cruel and vicious. The rest of us wish him well.

He should try going to a Planned Parenthood clinic for treatment. Of course, they will try to push an abortion on him.

@ Joan @ livingston – Joe's so disorientented that he goes to catholic church on Sunday to listen/participate in prayers to end abortion...then takes the podium in a national debate saying he supports abortion rights. Perhaps MD Anderson can slide him into the MRI as well. If that's not weak and disoriented, we're using different dictionaries. And debatably christian. Whether you're for or against abortion...Joe Biden likes a big fat hypocrisy sandwich.

Some of these comments are absolutely ridiculous, callous, thoughtless, and those people should be ashamed of themselves. I continue to wonder why people will turn ANYTHING into a political debate. This story is about a sick man, who just so happens to be the Vice President's son, and regardless of your political party the negative comments are absurd and do nothing to further your cause.

I shouldn't be, but I'm still shocked by the lack of compassion from people, anymore. The man and his family deserve a little respect, not ridicule.

Not all GOP are automatically Christians. Some are and some are not. Ditto for Democrats.

@ Patrick – this is on CNN exactly because they are politicians. If I (or you perhaps) were weak and disoriented, well, good luck to each of us. Not national news. Medical information is restricted by HIPAA and other laws, therefore the specifics of this trip could/should not have been disclosed without the Biden's permission. Thus, someone from their camp decided to allow publishing for worldwide consumption. Perhaps their intent was to elicit 'Get well Beau' messages. That's fine. I don't feel any more respect or sympathy for Beau Biden than I do for anyone else who went to the hospital this week. But Joe's not well either. And nobody seems to be helping him quiet the discordant voice in his head.

Sounds like it could be a TIA (transient ischemic attack). Some people call it a mini stroke. If so he'll be evaluated and get appropriate treatment.

Under ObamaCare, all Americans experiencing weakness and/or disorientation will be spirited to a top hospital of their choosing aboard Air Force 2. You are all unique and beautiful snowflakes. The wait time for this service is currently 25 years.
