Ted Cruz releases birth certificate

(CNN) – As Ted Cruz's profile has skyrocketed in the last year–thanks to his election to the U.S. Senate and an attention-grabbing itinerary to early presidential voting states–the Texas Republican's eligibility for president has come under question.

Born in Canada to a U.S. mother and a Cuban father, most legal experts have said Cruz qualifies as a "natural-born citizen," a requirement for the White House job, as stated in the Constitution.

And Cruz seems to agree. He told ABC News in July that he's not "going to engage in a legal debate."

"The facts are clear," he continued. "I can tell you where I was born and who my parents were. And then as a legal matter, others can worry about that. I'm not going to engage."

But he will release his birth certificate. In fact, he already has.

The Dallas Morning News ran a story late Sunday analyzing Cruz's documents, which he released to the newspaper on Friday.

Legal experts told the paper that Cruz is not only eligible for president in the United States, he's also technically a Canadian citizen and can even run for Parliament. Unless he renounces his citizenship there, he could also obtain a Canadian passport, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The senator's office, however, said Cruz has never embraced his legal rights in Canada, a country that he left when he was four.

"Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen," spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the newspaper. "To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce."

The recent debate has invoked the controversial "birther" movement that questioned President Barack Obama's eligibility for president. He put the issue to rest in 2011 when he released his long-form birth certificate proving he was born in Hawaii–though a small amount of conspiracists still maintain doubt about the president's place of birth.

Cruz will attend a GOP fundraiser in New Hampshire on Friday. Earlier this summer, he traveled to Iowa twice and stopped in South Carolina in May. All three states typically hold the first three contests in the presidential primary process.

If I read the natural-born citizen clause correctly, this guy is not eligible to run for president. You can be born abroad, but BOTH parents have to be US citizens in order for you to be eligible. His mother is American, but his father is Cuban, therefore, he is not eligible.

So Obama was born to a Kenyan father and American mother IN Hawaii and he is 'not a natural' born American'. Some say he was born IN Kenya to a Kenyan father and American mother and NOT a 'natural born American'. These SAME people say cruz IS a natural born American because he was born in Canada to a Cuban father and an American mother an he is considered a natural born American. Are you kidding me? How can these people be MORE hypocritical? Saying it is a different issue because the issue with Obama was his birth certificate was 'fake' is NOT a valid argument, because the FIRST argument was he was NOT a natural born American because he was born in Kenya, NOT that his birth certificate was fake!

    -------------------
He can run but he can't win in Canada he will never hold any public office with his extreme conservative views in a progressive nation. And even if he win by stroke of luck he will be voted out within 6 months or less. The Canadian forefathers had enacted laws that not only Protect Canadians well being but also their right to decide for themselves.America can keep him if they like him.

Well, that was quick. I think Mr. Obama decided that he was above all of that and somehow decided to hold off for many months after the Clinton's accused him of not being an American citizen. You remember that don't ya? All that tea party stuff really started with Hillary.

FYI – Founding Fathers recognized this 223 years ago:

The Naturalization Act of 1790 stated that "the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens". (Act to establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization, 1st Congress, 2nd session, March 26, 1790, 1 Stat.L. 103 at 104, 2 Laws of the U.S., ed. Bioren & Duane (1815) 82 at 83.) This act was superseded by theNaturalization Act of 1795, which did not mention the phrase natural born citizen.

Butt heads. Obama's birth announcement in 2 1961 Hawaiin newspapers is more proof than a birth certificate!
Oh but, right, you will accuse democrats of using a time machine to make that happen I guess.

Don't trust him. He has deep fondness for pipelines from his homeland of Alberta. These guys fail to tell you that the xl pipeline oil will not go to Americans it will be sold on the free market and China will win that bid every time. Cuban father, ideological sympathizer with the Canadian prime minister, who holds secretive meetings with the Chinese. The Obama birthers were running a distraction for the real infiltrators !

As a proud Canadian, I say good riddance and good luck. Anyone who would choose the American way of life over the Canadian does not deserve citizenship within the best nation in North America.

Unless his parents went to an embassy or consular office and obtained a "Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA)", then he is not a U.S. citizen. His mother would have bring him along, prove that she is a U.S. citizen and provide a certified original of his birth certificate. If his mother is not still alive he probably cannot prove his U.S. citizenship.
