Ted Cruz releases birth certificate

(CNN) – As Ted Cruz's profile has skyrocketed in the last year–thanks to his election to the U.S. Senate and an attention-grabbing itinerary to early presidential voting states–the Texas Republican's eligibility for president has come under question.

Born in Canada to a U.S. mother and a Cuban father, most legal experts have said Cruz qualifies as a "natural-born citizen," a requirement for the White House job, as stated in the Constitution.

And Cruz seems to agree. He told ABC News in July that he's not "going to engage in a legal debate."

"The facts are clear," he continued. "I can tell you where I was born and who my parents were. And then as a legal matter, others can worry about that. I'm not going to engage."

But he will release his birth certificate. In fact, he already has.

The Dallas Morning News ran a story late Sunday analyzing Cruz's documents, which he released to the newspaper on Friday.

Legal experts told the paper that Cruz is not only eligible for president in the United States, he's also technically a Canadian citizen and can even run for Parliament. Unless he renounces his citizenship there, he could also obtain a Canadian passport, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The senator's office, however, said Cruz has never embraced his legal rights in Canada, a country that he left when he was four.

"Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen," spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the newspaper. "To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce."

The recent debate has invoked the controversial "birther" movement that questioned President Barack Obama's eligibility for president. He put the issue to rest in 2011 when he released his long-form birth certificate proving he was born in Hawaii–though a small amount of conspiracists still maintain doubt about the president's place of birth.

Cruz will attend a GOP fundraiser in New Hampshire on Friday. Earlier this summer, he traveled to Iowa twice and stopped in South Carolina in May. All three states typically hold the first three contests in the presidential primary process.

    My head almost exploded!!!!!!!!
So what these "legal experts" are saying is that this teatroll can run for president of the US even though he was born in Canada because his mother is an American citizen? I guess his ather being Cuban passes because he is not black.
Can the birther movement and all its members explode right now please? Fools at town hall meetings going on right now call our President a Kenyan born communist, socialist. Can they explain the difference?
Not that Bama was born in Kenyan but can these people be more hypocritical?
McCarthy/cross needs to go back to Canada. I don't care whether he left when he was four years old leave the US!!!
We don't want or need you and your real communist rules.

The republicans have candidates from Mexico (Romney) Cuba (Rubio and Cruz) and Panama (McCain) and at the same time they want to keep immigrants out. SPECIAL

Pandemonious, do you even know when the word socialist means? You don't appear to.

@tonyl – A Hawaiian of Kenyan descent IS AN AMERICAN !!! It's not like he's a Texan of British descent, threatening to secede like a 3-year old having a temper tantrum every time he doesn't get is way.

The only reason the GOP is interested in Cruz is because his last name appeals to Hispanic voters and his whiteness appeals to the GOP base.

No new ideas, same anger, hatred and division. Typical Repub wannabe, never-gonna-be presidential candidate.

The birth certificate is obviously fake. I want to see his birth announcement in a local Canadian news paper. Once that is provided I will demand something else.

His citizenship is the LEAST of my concerns as to the reasons I think he would be a terrible President. I've started getting his newsletters since moving to TX and the man is completely bananas. Has some good ideas but the bad ones and his fear-mongering disqualify him from being an adequate leader for this country in my eyes.

I would imagine that Trump will be sending his investigating team to Canada at any moment to look into the legitimacy of this "so called" birth certificate. I'm sure the good Sheriff from Arizona already has his deputies up there.

Even IF Obama was born in Kenya, it would be the SAME issue. American mom abroad, non-American father. So WHAT would be the difference to the birthers? Gotta love hypocrisy.

Get this!! If President Barack Obama is considered African American, then, it follows that Senator Cruz is Hispanic American.......though Senator Cruz is less American because he was born in Canada.

Let's bring in the fact checkers on this. Maybe we can get Donald Trump to finance a team of detectives to verify that Cruz's birth certificate is authentic.

Cruz is a white Republican. His birth certificate won't be an issue to the birth certificate Nazis.

Soooo....a presidential candidate who has dual citizenship, and with a socialist country at that. I can just imagine the screams of condemnation from the GOP. If he wasn't a republican, that is...

Seems to me that the libbies on this site are all in arms and screeming bloody murder. Your hero took exactly how long to even show a BC that was questionable at best?

Funniest thing ever. Worse, he IS Canadian under Canadian law and can pack a Canadian passport if he wishes. If he wants to give tha up (and we certainly don't want him up here), he can fill out the form and pay the $100 like every one else.

Please do not renounce your Canadian citizenship so you can move there and run for office when you realize that you are finished down here.

Ted Cruz is the truly the son of Joe McCarthy. He looks just like him and has the same mean-spirited, grasping and ruthless nature. I'd love to see him be the GOP candidate, however, because Hillary would beat him in a record landslide.

I dont believe it is his real birth certificate. He was most likely born in Cuba and was sent to the US via Canada as a baby as part pf a Castro plot to turn the US communist....

So he's produced a certified, long form copy of his birth certificate-authenticated by experts?

Well then, when is he going to come clean and show us his birth certificate?! If he's really a citizen, he should be able to produce his real birth certificate.

I will only vote for a natural born citizen for president. Mr. Cruz is not an American citizen. HE IS CANADIAN.

    AJ;

Obama very famously told a joke about his middle name as being given to him "by someone who clearly never thought I'd run for President of the United States."

How many people regularly use their middle names in general? I didn't see George W. Bush go around making sure everyone called him "Walker."

He is indeed a citizen. The term natural born is different from native born. It goes back to English law which allowed for persons born of a British citizen to actually have been born out side of England, and still be a citizen. One of the reasons for the war of 1812. There should have never been any dispute about Obama since his mother was a US citizen, doesn't really matter where he was actually born. By the birthers argument, if a woman who is a citizen happens to give birth while traveling overseas, or even in the employ of the US government outside the borders, her child is not a citizen. Baloney.

Cruz may be a legal resident thanks to his mother. What is the difference if she was in Canada when he was born. Look at the thousands of "legal citizens" who were born here but their parents were not citizens or even legal aliens. It's all a big joke. This guy is a nut job in the mold of Perry.

Of course the Republican machine will spin this as a non-issue. The issue with President Obama was not that he was born in the US but that his skin tone did not match what some Americans consider ideal for Presidents. Even as the controversy spun it's way around the election process his foe Senator John McCain was not under the same scrutiny though he was born in Panama. Look that factoid up. Now comes Senator Cruz who has an even more 'iffy' situation going on in that his father was also a NON Citizen of the US and he was not born on US Soil, but an exception would be made because his mother was a US Citizen. Why? Because he has the right skin color to pass muster! It is so obviously racist that it should give all of us a moment to cringe at our own selves. PS. I am Latino born here in the US but will not vote for someone who s not born within the borders of this great country of ours. Period.

AJ Hackler in Virginia – "It also doesn't ever answer the question of 'why did Obama pay to have his college records sealed'"
    ****************************************************************************************
Sorry, you can't pay to have your college records sealed. It doesn't work that way. They are not public records, anyway. President Obama transferred from Occidental to Columbia before going on the Harvard Law. He was ELECTED by his fellow students to edit the Harvard Law Review, perhaps the highest honor the students can convey on one of their own. Get over it, the man is EXTREMELY academically and intellectually impressive. I find attempts to attack his academic background (just like trying to make him somehow less American) simultaneously humorous and pathetic. But I do appreciate the opportunity to tout his impressive background. It does bear repeating due to the constant attacks by people who couldn't hold a candle to him.
