Ted Cruz releases birth certificate

(CNN) – As Ted Cruz's profile has skyrocketed in the last year–thanks to his election to the U.S. Senate and an attention-grabbing itinerary to early presidential voting states–the Texas Republican's eligibility for president has come under question.

Born in Canada to a U.S. mother and a Cuban father, most legal experts have said Cruz qualifies as a "natural-born citizen," a requirement for the White House job, as stated in the Constitution.

And Cruz seems to agree. He told ABC News in July that he's not "going to engage in a legal debate."

"The facts are clear," he continued. "I can tell you where I was born and who my parents were. And then as a legal matter, others can worry about that. I'm not going to engage."

But he will release his birth certificate. In fact, he already has.

The Dallas Morning News ran a story late Sunday analyzing Cruz's documents, which he released to the newspaper on Friday.

Legal experts told the paper that Cruz is not only eligible for president in the United States, he's also technically a Canadian citizen and can even run for Parliament. Unless he renounces his citizenship there, he could also obtain a Canadian passport, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The senator's office, however, said Cruz has never embraced his legal rights in Canada, a country that he left when he was four.

"Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen," spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told the newspaper. "To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce."

The recent debate has invoked the controversial "birther" movement that questioned President Barack Obama's eligibility for president. He put the issue to rest in 2011 when he released his long-form birth certificate proving he was born in Hawaii–though a small amount of conspiracists still maintain doubt about the president's place of birth.

Cruz will attend a GOP fundraiser in New Hampshire on Friday. Earlier this summer, he traveled to Iowa twice and stopped in South Carolina in May. All three states typically hold the first three contests in the presidential primary process.

  1. What!!! What!!!! What!!!!!!

So if Cruz is a natural born citizen, that make President Obama definitely a natural born citizen since he was BORN in America to a US citizen. If President Obama is not a natural born citizen, Cruz is only a Canadian. It sounds like a double standard if the birthers keep saying that President Obama is not a natural born citizen.

I love God's sense of humor. All of these years that birthers/tea partyers have attacked President Obama relentlessly. Now their wonder boy was not born in the U.S. (LOL).

It does not matter where Ted Cruz was born because he is otherwise unqualified for the Office of the Presidency because he is just too stupid and dogmatic in his far right beliefs to represent the greatest majority of Americans in any public office.

If he gets the nomination in 2016, he will be run over by any Democratic candidate. Cruz is too dumb and extreme.

"To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship" – that's one of the dumbest statements I ever read. He was born there and lived there 4 years, of course he's a Canadian citizen (in addition to a US citizen)

Also, it's the exact same thing people accused Obama of – having an American mother and being born in another country. So, even if Obama was born in Kenya (which he wasn't), he would have been a 'natural born citizen' as well

"put the issue to rest" – LOL! The obviously faked (forged/modified) "long form" birth certificate did not convince anyone that questioned Obama's birthplace that he was born in Hawaii. And no amount of proof could convince the koolaid drinkers that he was not born here. There is a HUGE amount of people that do not believe he was born here btw.

Oh, and Ted Cruz is not eligible to run for POTUS. He is not a natural born citizen.

I'm off of my hiatus. Miss me? Rafael is trying to shut down birtherism early, but there's no getting around it. He was born in Canada. That is an undeniable FACT. Rafael needs to show us his green card and his papers. Why call yourself "Ted" when your real name is "Rafael?" Same for "Bobby" Jindal. Your name is Piyush.

Why is Cruz a US citizen? Was his mother or father working for the US government outside the US? Looks to me like he was born outside the US, and just because his mother was American doesn't make him an American citizen.
    -------------–
Cruz is a US citizen from birth. However, Cruz does not meet the traditionally accepted interpretation of "natural born citizen", which has been accepted to mean "having been born on U.S. soil." The Cruz camp is trying to rewrite history and the traditionally accepted definition.

You seem confused. The GOP can not win on the issues, so they have to change the rules in order to "try" to get more votes. Sadly, it will not work and the GOP will soon go the way of the Whig Party. Even insiders in the GOP concede that as a party , the GOP is in serious trouble and can not win elections on a national level, with its ever-shrinking base.

The Cruz thing is being run so that they can claim Obama is natural born when it does eventually come out that he was in fact born in Kenya. This is nothing but CYA damage control by those that know he was not born in the US and allowed him to illegally and unconstitutionality run for POTUS.

So... not that I really get why you guys have the whole "natural" citizen thing as a requirement for a president in a country of immigrants... but what is this hypocrisy? How do the racists sleep at night?

I don't really know much about Ted Cruz, or his ambitions (and didn't pay attention to his party allegiance). If he was born in Canada, and it wasn't because his mom accidentally gave birth on vacation, or she was on military deployment (I don't think there are other exceptions) then he is Canadian by birth. It doesn't matter if he came here at the age of 1 day, 4 years or 40 years.
On a side, I was born in Israel, and came to the US at age 4. I became a naturalized citizen. I also want to run for US President, and realize it will not happen under our current constitution.

Let's see if certain people on the right claim that the birth certificate is a forgery, or–because he is a Republican–they will believe it unchallenged.

  22. Standard Forms

Cruz is a US citizen if his parents declared him as such officially via a consulate or embassy, otherwise at BEST it is debatable. As with everything-Gummamint, there are forms that need to be filled out saying "Our kid is a US citizen even though he was born outside US territory". See the first hit(s) from Googling for "report of birth abroad"

People, people, I am NOT a Republican, but at at least Mr. Ted Cruz has released his official/legal birth certificate. The documentation that Mr. Obama produced seems to be a forged document. Now, now, don't get us going on HIS college transcripts! Now, why all the secrecy and expense on Mr. Obama's part?! Like HIS other "phony stories", it still smells like a cover up.

    Uhm...

América needs to know the truth and nothing but the truth!!!

OK Obamamites, you may express yourselves...
