GOP Rep: Impeaching Obama 'would be a dream come true'

(CNN) – Evidence of wrongdoing is about the only thing stopping Republican Rep. Kerry Bentivolio from attempting to impeach President Barack Obama, he told voters Monday.

In a YouTube video first reported by the liberal-leaning website Mediaite, Bentivolio responded to a woman during a Q&A session that "if I could write that bill and submit it," he said, moving to impeach Obama "would be a dream come true."

The first-term Representative from Michigan's 11th district was asked who would do something "to stop this runaway train that we have in the White House," by an unnamed woman off-screen.

"Who is going to stop Obama from everything that he is doing against our Constitution? He needs to be stopped," the woman said.

Bentivolio answered that he had looked at means to impeach Obama, saying "I feel your pain," particularly after hearing Obama speak at an unnamed event.

"I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him. And I couldn't stand being there," Bentivolio, a former Santa Claus impersonator, teacher and reindeer farmer.

"But because he is president, I have to respect the office."

According to Bentivolio, who sits on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, he consulted attorneys. "These are lawyers, PhDs in history, I said; tell me how can I impeach the President of the United States."

The response, Bentivolio said, was that he needed evidence. While he didn't name any specific charges, the potential evidence he cited would be a theoretical email from the White House to the IRS specifically ordering the targeting of conservative groups for scrutiny in their tax exempt status application.

Despite ongoing Congressional scrutiny, no proof has yet emerged that the White House ordered any extra IRS scrutiny of conservative groups.

"Until we have evidence, you're going to become a laughing stock if you submitted a bill to impeach the president," Bentivolio said.

"And there are some people out there, no matter what Obama does; he's still the greatest president they have ever had. That's what you're fighting."

The idea of impeaching Obama has come up several times recently, including when Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold told his Texas constituents that the House of Representatives "could probably get the votes" to impeach Obama.

Unlike Bentivolio, Farenthold did not name any specific wrongdoing he would charge Obama with, although he did caution that a failed attempt at impeachment would do more harm than good.

As he closed out his remarks, Bentivolio said that the most corrupt institution in Washington was not the president but in fact the media, contrasted to Congress, whom he said were typically honest.

"Every congressman I've had, well at least on my side of the aisle, has been very straight and forward," Bentivolio said.

    @Tim,

The House can impeach Obama all they like, evidence of actual wrongdoing or no. (See Clinton, Bill.). In fact, I hope they do. The level of disgust for the GOP will rise so high that they'll lose they're gerrymandered Congressional seats in 2014. Meanwhile, the Senate won't eject the President from the Oval Office and life will continue - just without Boehner as House Speaker.

This guy is behind the times. Republicans have been looking to stop Obama since he got the democratic nomination. The birther movement was only one of the 1st attempts. Recall who actually injected race into all this when republicans went on a rampage over Rev. Wright. Just the tip of the iceberg, as it turns out.

Remember Fast and Furious? More like False and Frivolous. 2+ years and not a single piece of evidence. Remember Solyndra? Republicans don't either. Not since Paul Ryan was found requesting stimulus money that he campaigned against for a donor to start up an energy company. Benghazi? Darrel Issa conveniently did not disclose e-mails that contradicted his well stated beliefs. IRS? Same thing. NSA? Fully disclosed to republicans on the committee that fully support the operation.

In all, about 6 years of republicans trying to find something to impeach him on. Add to that all the obstruction, the useless votes on meaningless legislation, the lack of respect and civility, the pure ignorance of those in the republican ranks and topped off with the inability to actual produce a single idea to combat those they believe will doom the country and you have yourself a nice synopsis republicans can use as a blueprint for what went wrong in 2012.

President Obama should be impeached. ince he has been in office, our country has gone downhill financially and morale of the people. The U.S. has gone down in esteem and respect in the global community due to Obama's lies and all the recent IRS and NSA spying scandals of which the President "was unaware." Nothing is done without the President's knowledge and consent. If a President does not know what is going on in their administration, they should not be president. I did not vote for Obama either time and cannot wait until his final term is over!

Is he really saying that if Republicans had enough votes to make a "charge" stick, no matter what it is, that they would go forward and impeach the Presdient? Doesn't that rise to the level of conspiracty to commit treason on his part?

This is hilarious, the rethugs talking about when they take back the senate in 2014 they can impeach Obama. Not only will they not take back the senate, but dems will probably pick up another seat or two and will be very close to taking back the house and with only a few scared republications who will vote with the dems, they won't have ANY POWER! They can just sit on the sidelines and watch stuff get done WITHOUT their help!

"They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty" (Psalm 69: 4)"He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me" -(2nd Samuel 22: 18)
