New Jersey energy grid gets an Obama administration lift

Secaucus, New Jersey (CNN) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie again partnered with the Obama administration Monday in their joint response to superstorm Sandy that hit the East Coast almost one year ago.

Christie and Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced their intention to research and develop plans for a new energy grid aimed at taking the New Jersey transit system off the areas' larger grid to protect the state's "critical operations" when larger infrastructure fails, Christie said.

The Republican governor said the effort is an "example of how federal and state agencies can work together" to "develop new technology that will keep our people and our technology on the move for decades to come."

Christie says Sandy caused 68% of Garden State residents to experience power outages and the state's rail system suffered an estimated $400 million of damage during the storm.

The proposal, which is expected to be carried out by the Department's Sandia National Laboratories, the NJ Transit and Board of Public Utilities, is the first non-military micro energy grid in the country, Christie said. Moniz said it will "help New Jersey lead the way" and ensure the state is ready for the next major event.

Christie was a top surrogate for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney when the storm slammed into the northeast just days before the November 2012 election He's received criticism for his embrace of President Obama and the administration in the aftermath of the storm but has insisted he will act for his state, regardless of party. In addition to his appearance Monday with Moniz, Christie toured storm impacted areas earlier this year with the president and last week with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan.

The Obama administration recently released a report, conducted post-Sandy, that details 69 recommendations to rebuild areas hit hardest by the hurricane and suggestions to improve communication systems and electrical grids along the East Coast.

Standing in a New Jersey train terminal named for the late Sen. Frank Lautenburg, Chrisite, the Republican firebrand, said projects like the micro grid will hopefully allow institutions like hospitals and water treatment plants to be taken off the larger grid and create jobs in his state.

Christie has invested heavily in an ad campaign to bring tourists to his state, the fruits of which were viewed by Moniz as he landed at Newark airport Monday.

"I think is citizens have shown remarkable resilience on their own during the aftermath and now this is the time getting to infrastructure with the same resilience," Moniz said.

New Jersey folks beware: Don't fall for the "partisan" tricks of Christie. He's trying to keep the Dems comfortable with his re-election. Oust him...he'll change faces IF he gets re-elected. He's attempting to "lull" the Liberals of NJ into a sleep mode in the thoughts of "tramping" on you later. Vote Democratic in October. It's just a game. This is Prez Obama making this happen. Heck, he don't even believe in climate change!

More Christie fluff? When is CNN going to report on the policies he's enacted that are DAMAGING the public education and other systems in NJ? Or is CNN in full-blown Christie promotion mode now that there's merely 3 years left to try to really set up a horse race narrative? Trying to get back in the RNC's good graces, CNN?

here's the deal – Boehner & company, & Reid & company is waiting on 2014....period. They don't care about the 420 filibusters & all the other stuff. They are BOTH taking a Gamble, period...... They are BOTH gambling on "their side" winning in the mid-terms, period. So everything will continue to "stall" no matter what it is) till then...If the Obama election machine, coupled w/ the Hillary election machine, goes up against the republicans in 2014, They (the republicans) better have a lot of cash flow. ( and I mean a lot of money) because with the Obama social media, coupled with the Clinton machine, e-mails / twitter followers / & everything else out there, I'm tellin ya, you better have plenty of popcorn, because the movie is going to be a long one. Bottom line : nothing is gonna happen, till 2014.

I have to agree with this observation. I'd like to remind NJ voters how Christie negotiated with his Democratic state legislature. He didn't. He deceived them. Both sides gave concessions to the other, the legislature passed the bills on to Christie who proceeded to use his line item veto to remove all of his concessions.

Nice guy that Gov. Christie, huh? He's full of tricks. Remember, folks. Christie is on record saying that the only things that matter is to win elections so that Republicans can rule. He used the word rule, not govern, which speaks volumes about intent.

Rudy. I was working on the" ARC Tunnel" project until Christie put the Kibosh on it. It has been resurrected with federal money, now named "Gateway", so Chris can't cancel it. It really isn't "high speed" per se, but it will add more tracks and increase passenger throughput between NY and NJ. The existing tunnels are 100 years old and this project is desperately needed!

The country needs a new power grid that can accept more renewables, store them when not needed or over produced and feed them back into the grid when needed. This need goes beyond just NJ. If the power sources (solar, wind & tidal just name a few) could be produced to do the heavy lifting with well protected and more advanced fission power plants, then we wouldn't need fossil fuels.
