(CNN) – Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.
"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.
Mary Cheney married her longtime partner, Heather Poe, last year in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The couple have two children together - a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah.
"Freedom means freedom for everyone," Mary Cheney added. "That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."
Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators.
The statement, Cheney's campaign said, was in response to reports of a "push poll" in Wyoming that was asking voters if they were aware Cheney "supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage."
"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents."
Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, is challenging Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his seat.
Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run in 2000 for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.
Dick Cheney has said in the past that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, though like his daughter Liz he says regulations should be handled at the state level.

Why is this even a debate? Who someone wants to be with is not the governments responsibility, and no one else besides those that are to be wed. I think this adds to the never ending story of the People want what they can't have and will do anything to get it. Drugs, Alcohol, Gay Marriage is all the same thing in the end, temptation and the need to have something that they cannot have. Everything else is changing in the world and the conservatives of old cannot keep up with the pace. It is time to roll with the punches and allow things to go, otherwise we will be wasting time on the little things and not focusing on what really matters to be a successful country, which we are no longer.
Where can one go to get protection FROM religion.
Marriage is only between opposite sex, same race, same religion people. Period!"
According to the Bible, All of Mankind descended from 1 Man and 1 Woman...Who had two sons.
Think about that. Take all the time you need."
Ok...Who did the boys marry? Each other? Their mom? – oh no! Think about that.
Cheneys = the perfect ilk for Family Feud.
I was never in favor of gay marriage, but when states couldn't get together on common law or domestic partner laws, they lost my support. I still don't support it, but I accept it, because the need for legal status, benefits, etc, etc, etc. The Religious Right and my Conservatives friends made this bed now they are going to lay it! And I really hope they come out of it with more understanding and compassion, but I doubt it seriously!
Isn't it telling when the GOP can't even be civil to family. God loves all his children, why can't the GOP at least do a good job pretending to be Christian?
Those who claim that it goes against god's will... that's fine. God could come down from heaven and proclaim that gay marriage is an abomination... and that's fine. The problem with this is that we're not a christian nation. By the constitution we don't create laws that honor any specific religion. This is something you need to come to understand. You need to understand that just because you find it offensive or wrong doesn't mean you can make it illegal.
When the word "freedom" is used, it is at times put on a parallel with almost absolute freedom, able to do most anything at any time in "my way". And if others disagree, then "you are treading on my freedom." Who has the right to establish what is right and wrong, and in this case what constitutes marriage ?
Many who accept same-sex marriage are also often "church-goers", being affiliated with the churches of Christendom. Yet, they reject the Bible's moral boundary regarding marriage. At Genesis 2, our Creator, Jehovah God, established that marriage was to be between a man as a husband and a woman as his wife, making them "one flesh".(Gen 2:24) Some 4,000 years later, Jesus reaffirmed this arrangement.(Matt 19:4-6)
Both Mary Cheney and Liz Cheney do not have God's view of the marital arrangement, but are espousing their own personal ideology on the matter, giving their own opinion. Jesus, on the other hand, always presented his (and our) Father's moral perimeters, saying on more than one occasion: "It is written" (Matt 4:4, 7, 10) or "Have you not read" (Matt 12:3, 5) or "did you not read" (Matt 19:4; 22:31). Jesus thus pointed everyone's attention to God's moral standards, as found in the Bible.
It speaks volumes about how messed up the GOP is when one examines their anti-Gay positions:
They claim to be the party of freedom- but that apparently isn't for anyone just like them.
They claim they are for smaller government, yet their GOP-controlled Legislature in NC has just prescribed exactly what forms of sex are permitted- making all others illegal. How will they enforce that? More laws- bigger government.
Is it marriage or sodomy? Just a question
Jesus had two dads he did just fine
It's ironic that Dick says that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, trust me he wouldn't have said that at all and would have been opposed to this had his daughter not been gay. I will just call this idiot two-faced Cheney.
Bet Liz Cheney believes that a woman's right to vote should be decided at the state level too.
Someone should definitely ask her to confirm this at a very public event. Would be interesting to see if she can lie with a straight face like her dad.
GOP preaches for less Government in our lives yet they will decide who consitutes their idea of "normal" and decide who can form a family and who can't. Everytime you try to speak to a republican about the issue they use God and the Bible as a defencse. Are they not aware of the age of enlighenment where it was for very good reasons decided that church and state must be kept SEPARATE? So problem with GOP argument – 1 Just because it is written in the bible does not make it LAW in the United States. 2 – If you preach less government and more focus on jobs, WHY continue this campaign against gay people?
