Mary Cheney says sister is 'dead wrong' on same-sex marriage

Updated 3:04 p.m. ET, 9/1

(CNN) – Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.

Mary Cheney married her longtime partner, Heather Poe, last year in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The couple have two children together - a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah.

"Freedom means freedom for everyone," Mary Cheney added. "That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."

Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators.

The statement, Cheney's campaign said, was in response to reports of a "push poll" in Wyoming that was asking voters if they were aware Cheney "supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage."

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents."

Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, is challenging Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his seat.

Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run in 2000 for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.

Dick Cheney has said in the past that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, though like his daughter Liz he says regulations should be handled at the state level.

– CNN's Ashley Killough and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

It is obvious that heterosexuals do not have a monopoly on love and commitment.
A conservative reason to support marriage equality is the fact that studies show that married people are slightly healthier, happier, and wealthier than their single counterparts.

Liz Chaney is dead wrong 95% of the time , what else is new ?

Mary should run for office , she sounds like a human being not a republican robot .

call it whatever you want mary, but it is not a marriage. the far left loons in this world can continue to try and redefined every word and institution, but those with common sense know what is real and what is leftist lunacy. this is what happens when the patients start running the asylum.

  6. All an act

This is all an act. A terrible, terrible act. Sister is running, lets throw some drama into the mix to get her more attention. Big sis will lie about what she really believes and little sis will act outraged. Politicians play this game all the time and usually it's a democrat versus republican. I'm not buying it. Vote for whoever else is running. Ignore these grown women acting like little girls. How shameful.

Oh oh! Trouble in Talibanland. I smell a wedge issue. If the Dems were as nasty as the Taliban Party were, they would use this to divide and conquer.

So now if we disagree with lesbians and gays we are wrong? It used to be if you disagree with the majority you were wrong. Now if we disagree with either Pol party we are wrong. How about we just disagree? Who appointed anyone the judge of right or wrong anyway? Mary isn't dead right any more than Liz is dead wrong. They are called opinions.

My dad is black and mom is white( both have passed away) We came to the USA in 1962. Mom and dad were us citizens. We were given a list of states we could not enter because mixed marriage was a crime. If states could have made marriage laws mixed marriage would still be a crime in some states.

" The couple have two children together – a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah."

Ok, which one was concealing peg A to insert into slot B?

No one? Then they didn't have any kids "together":. They bought somebody's Peg A.

Why would anyone want to put so much energy into an effort to keep someone other consenting adults from being happy.

Thanksgiving is going to be really, really awkward at the Cheney household.

This is a great lesson in genetics. It is clear that the Cheney genes have an evil one. But there is also a double recessive match that can eliminate the effects of this gene, ergo, Mary. The others are evil personified.

There is no mothers, sisters, brothers for Liz, which makes her one heartless politician that you should NEVER trust with your own kids.

It is unfortunate that Liz Cheney does not have the gumption to stand up for the lovely family of her own flesh and blood. If she devalues the rights of her own sister this way, how could we expect he to empathize with the average Joe? I would vote for Mary who is honest enough to live her life in the light, but never for Liz.

Mary, its unfortunate that your sister would say such things.

    It's not necessary anymore politically.

Same-sex marriage is gaining broad support on boths side of the aisle.

A lesson in genetics: There is an evil gene which the Cheney family has on both maternal and fraternal side. However, a double recessive combination can produce a non evil person such as Mary. The rest of the Cheneys are pure evil and always will be. I have already replaced by bucket list item of visiting Dealey Plaza with that of pissing on Dick Cheneys greave when he dies.

@just saying: Actually, you can go ahead and call it whatever you want. Those of us with a vested interest couldn't possibly care less what you call it as long as the government calls it marriage. So, knock yourself out... please.

I think that it's very sad, that her sister doesn't support her .But I am not surprised, look who her father is. Here in San Antonio Tx. we have a Council Woman, Elisa Chan, who denigrated the entire LGBT community and she is getting a lot of support (sic) however misguided it may be. A local African American pastor, who supports her, stated that the gay community has not suffered as much as African Americans have, therefore, they do not need the extra protection .I guess he didn't know that MLK and James Baldwin were close friends. Talk about abandoning gay members of your family, Just like the Cheney's. In Germany, more than one hundred thousand were tortured and killed for being gay. There is nothing worse than other Americans, who think that the Constitution only applies to them . Just because they don't think like you do ? Who do they think you are ? What makes you so special as to deny others, their rights and denigrate them for being different ? What kind of a way is that to raise your kids ?

Liz Cheney is entitled to her opinion and her spoiled brat little lesbian sister should keep her mouth shut and mind her own business.

I am with Liz on this one. Marriage is between a man and woman. Gays can call their unions whatever they want – just don't call it marriage.

I'd never vote for a Cheney, I'm afraid they have the same genes as the father.

  25. No More Old-Time Thinking

What the people of Wyoming need to know and realize is that they do not need yet another Republican candidate who would continue to marginalize Gays and Lesbians by and large by her beliefs. Those who traditionally vote Republican need to do is wake up from their Sixteenth Century slumber and realize it is now the Twenty-Second Century! Those old, antiquated and prejudiced beliefs about Gays and Lesbians need to be buried now and remain buried. They need a Progressive candidate to win that Senate race and that seat should rightfully go to a Democrat. Enough said.
