Mary Cheney says sister is 'dead wrong' on same-sex marriage

Updated 3:04 p.m. ET, 9/1

(CNN) – Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.

Mary Cheney married her longtime partner, Heather Poe, last year in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The couple have two children together - a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah.

"Freedom means freedom for everyone," Mary Cheney added. "That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."

Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators.

The statement, Cheney's campaign said, was in response to reports of a "push poll" in Wyoming that was asking voters if they were aware Cheney "supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage."

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents."

Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, is challenging Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his seat.

Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run in 2000 for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.

Dick Cheney has said in the past that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, though like his daughter Liz he says regulations should be handled at the state level.

– CNN's Ashley Killough and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

If basic rights were left strictly to the voters, Women and minorities still wouldn't have the right to vote. Sometimes the Government has to act for the greater good.

Liz Cheney is something else. I am glad her sister called her on her stance on gay marriage. I mean really how is it that this woman who hasn't been in Wyoming for any length of time in recent memory is running for the US Senate from Wyoming? She is way, way too right wing for me.

If you truly love someone, you will not bite your tongue but you will speak the truth in love. Love should compel us to warn those we love that h-mos-xuality is sin and brings the judgement of God.

Liz Cheney attacks her own flesh and blood–is this what the "Gay Obsessed Party" calls "family values"?

I'm sorry you suffer from the mental disorder, homophobia, "just saying." Please seek mental health care first thing Tuesday morning.

"Liz Cheney said last week the issues of marriage should be left up to voters." Do Republicans realize we live in a Republic? Republicanism is defined that ALL citizens have unalienable rights, THAT CANNOT BE VOTED AWAY??

Republicanism is defined as ALL citizens posses unalienable rights, that cannot be voted away by the majority. Do Republicans realize we live in a Republic? What is Liz Cheney talking about saying marriage should be decided by voters?

Republicanism is defined as ALL citizens have unalienable rights, that cannot be voted away by the tyranny of the majority. Do Republicans realize that we live in a Republic, LOLZ. Liz Cheney saying marriage should be put to a vote is despicable.

Don't be afraid to inform your readers of different points of view. You may find that you are depriving them of words that may save their lives.

If someone can provide me a REASONED argument on how gay marriage somehow threatens my heterosexual marriage, I'd be interested. (NOTE: This reasoned argument should not include ones personal religious viewpoint)

That's disturbing to me. Family members should be able to put aside their differences and be supportive. I think it's very sad that someone, who supposedly loves you, is supporting others, that are trying to not only denigrate you, but steal your Constitutional rights.

Well, I used to live in Wyoming. Beautiful state, terrifically nice people in parts of it, terribly hostile bigots in other parts. I guess Liz is in one of the other parts.

According to the Bible, real marriage is between a man and the woman he will own as property. I prefer to opt for a more modern version.

If people are so worried about "protecting" marriage, why don't they put their effort and energy into banning divorce?

"Leave it up to the states." That old cop out... Yeah because rights are optional, and should vary depending on geographic location... >.<

People get all worked up as if marriage is something sacred. It isn't it's just a partnership with legal aspects. Get over yourselves
