Mary Cheney says sister is 'dead wrong' on same-sex marriage

Updated 3:04 p.m. ET, 9/1

(CNN) – Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.

Mary Cheney married her longtime partner, Heather Poe, last year in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The couple have two children together - a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah.

"Freedom means freedom for everyone," Mary Cheney added. "That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."

Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators.

The statement, Cheney's campaign said, was in response to reports of a "push poll" in Wyoming that was asking voters if they were aware Cheney "supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage."

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents."

Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, is challenging Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his seat.

Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run in 2000 for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.

Dick Cheney has said in the past that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, though like his daughter Liz he says regulations should be handled at the state level.

– CNN's Ashley Killough and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Only homosexuals want to get married so badly. So if GOP wants to protect family values ...

Actually Mary is dead wrong, regardless of your opinion of gay marriage, it should be left up to the states to decide.

Who really cares what the Cheney's think, say or do. They are all yesterdays news, hopefully a trend that will keep going.

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign". Are you kidding me? Our political system runs on lies and smears. That is why we are doomed as a nation. If there was a law making it a crime for an elected official to knowingly lie to it's constituency, we might have a chance. Won't happen. Fargon

Why is she wrong for having a opinion....oh that's right it is not a left wing opinion. she is not wrong. It is a un natural act that some people think that if they say it enough times it will appear to be normal behavior. No matter how many times it is stated it is still not a natural act. I don't care what mary does in her house but don't tell me I have to accept people committing a un-natural act as normal

    @ just saying:

call it whatever you want, but it hate and homophobia are a disease. the far right loons in this world can continue to try and restrict and minimize other humans that they don't like. but those with common sense know what is real and what is conservofascist lunacy. this is what happens when the ignorant are allowed to vote for teapublicans.

@justsaying – "far left loons"? "leftist lunacy"? Inability to properly speak English – "to try and redefined every word"? Yep, a Republican alright with those Limbaugh talking points in hand. Please, go spread your fundamentalist bible thumping message elsewhere. There are real people in search of real freedom doing good things. Remember that agenda point where you want the government out of people's lives? You don't get to have a list of exceptions based on what Pat Robertson says you should. You say the patients are running the asylum? Maybe they have been and now the doctors are taking control again. I'm sure thinking the other way makes your head hurt so please don't try too hard.

"the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states" The problem with this is that our form of government was established so that the minority is protected from the majority.

Thomas: The fact that she's human and intelligent disqualifies her from running for office.

just saying: You have no idea how many different meanings marriage has had over the centuries. Do you believe in the sky fairy and his zombie son? If so, read your holy book. The ideas of relationships it has in there don't exactly jive with what you thumpers would promote. Silly muppet.

I agree with all an act. But why are we still talking about this nonsense. Let gay people get married. The sky hasn't fallen here in Uruguay (or Mass, Wash, Maine, Spain, South Africa, or Canada for that matter). This is a diversion.

Studies show no one is born gay. There is no gay gene. Same-sex marriage is not a civil rights issue.

A few studies in the early 1990s were used to justify the existence of a gay gene, but they have since been discredited. Researcher Simon LeVay using cadavers found differences in the hypothalamus of homosexual vs. heterosexual brains. The problem is he did not know which brain belonged to which category. His results were not able to be duplicated and he said he did not find a gay gene. Subsequently, two psychiatrists reported in the March 1993 Archives of General Psychology that “Critical review shows the evidence favoring a biologic theory to be lacking…”

Researchers Peter Bearman from Columbia and Hannah Bruckner from Yale studied the homosexuals with identical twins and found that only about 6% of the twins were homosexuals. It should be 100% if it were genetic. They said the data “does not suggest genetic influence independent of social context…. Our results support the hypothesis that less gendered socialization in early childhood and preadolescence shapes subsequent same-sex preferences.” This was reported in the American Journal of Sociology (March 2002).

Homosexual behavior is a class of behavior and not a class of people. Homosexual orientation is not immutable; it can and has been changed. Homosexuals like heterosexuals can choose whether or not to act on their desires. There is no gay gene and all laws distinguish among different kinds of behavior, so same-sex marriage is not a civil rights issue.

How about love of a relative, child, a pet, more than one person, or what veer as a reason for marrying them?
Everyone is equal, but not all actions are equally good.

That same sex marriage is not actually marriage but that they should be managed by the states, was Obama’s view till only a couple of years ago. Basically the same view Liz has. It’s great that that same view is somehow pardonable so long as President Obama holds it, but demonstrates homophobia so long as a republican holds it.

The law of the land in the US is NOT driven by the bible, it is driven by laws created by people to keep us safe from each other. Whether you believe in owning a dog or a cat, a ford or a chevy, same sex marriage or traditional family, own a prius or a hoggy SUV, its your choice and has nothing to do with the law of the land that allows those choices. As people we can choose to like or dislike but we must allow others to do as they please as long as the law allows.

I wouldn't believe anything that Liz Cheney says. She's Dick-head Cheney's daughter and he's a huge liar. Remember...he got GWB to tell us that Sadam had weapons of mass destruction...and then none were ever found.....LIAR!

@OK ....and that's the best response you can give? Log Cabin Republicans is the liberal BS propaganda tool if something is not accepted. Most ppl don't have a problem with same sex marriage because it does not effect them. That is where they fail as children of God. It is not to intervene in one's happiness, but the actual caring of one's salvation. Look up Leviticus 18:22. Those that don't accept they are wrong cause of God's Word are damned. If they don't repent, then they are cursed and become the property of Satan. Case closed. No rebuttal. Jesus came to show ppl that they are sinners cause of the knowledge of sin. Marriage has and always will be in God's eyes between a man and woman. The illusion of same sex marriage is that of man which has no authority in God's eyes.

When will voters ever learn that the ONLY time politicians care about abortion or gay marriage is during election time? It is a hot button issue that is meant to drive their base to the voting polls. After the election, they honestly could not care less about what happens with these issues. Stop falling for this tactic. As for gay marriage, why should straight people really care? I'm straight and married and I don't care what gay consenting adults do. Their marriage has nothing to do with mine. The only people involved in the success of my marriage are myself and my husband. If we don't make it, it will have zero to do with whether or not someone else is allowed to get married. You don't have to approve of it or think that it is the right moral choice to make. What you do have to do, as an American, is allow fellow citizens the right to make their own choice about it. It is called Freedom. If you don't understand that concept, you need to retake a civics course. You are free to voice your disapproval all you want. You are NOT free to pass to laws that prohibit someone else from exercising their own freedoms. It really isn't a complicated concept. Religious beliefs do not allow you to trample on someone else's rights. So, complain all you want about gay marriage. Just don't try to stand in the way of those who don't share your religious beliefs.

Religious leaders want to own happiness, so that they can dole it out to parishioners in return for obedience and regular collection plate donations.
