Mary Cheney says sister is 'dead wrong' on same-sex marriage

Updated 3:04 p.m. ET, 9/1

(CNN) – Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.

Mary Cheney married her longtime partner, Heather Poe, last year in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The couple have two children together - a son, Samuel, and a daughter, Sarah.

"Freedom means freedom for everyone," Mary Cheney added. "That means that all families - regardless of how they look or how they are made - all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other."

Liz Cheney said last week she is "not pro-gay marriage" and believes the issues of marriage should be left up to voters in their respective states, not to judges or legislators.

The statement, Cheney's campaign said, was in response to reports of a "push poll" in Wyoming that was asking voters if they were aware Cheney "supports abortion and aggressively promotes gay marriage."

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents."

Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, is challenging Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his seat.

Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run in 2000 for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.

Dick Cheney has said in the past that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry, though like his daughter Liz he says regulations should be handled at the state level.

– CNN's Ashley Killough and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Listen up libs...Liz has a right to her opinion. Plain and simple!!!! I have had it with your intolerance. It's both sickening and hypocritical. Marriage was created by God, I know that causes extreme anger in you but the truth always puts you in a rage.

Conservative Republicans argue that the Government is too intrusive: "Don't Tread on Me Flags" wave at Tea Party rallies. The Government taxes too much, wants to take away our guns and is too controlling in so many ways. But, bring up Equal Marriage Rights, legalizing marijuana then the government has a right and duty to intervene.
Question: who would you rather have move into your town: a gay couple who smoke a little pot or a straight couple with ARs who drink whiskey? Interesting that conservatives are now the party of mayhem.

Marriage is between a man and a woman. Anything else is unnatural and should be discouraged. That is all.

Same sex marriage is not something that 'state rights' come into play on, because it is Constitutional rights that are being infringed upon.

Freedom is about living wages, opportunities for its citizens first. Not the giving offshoring companies every taxpayer-funded entitlement...

Their 'feud" looks little more than another song and dance wedge issue.

The younger generation has it right. I don't remember the exact statistics, but I think that around 80% of those under 30 thing gay marriage should be unversally recognized and legal. For the oldest segments of our population, the stats are about the opposite. So, it's just a matter of time.

I'm a bit older (54), and my thinking on this issue has evolved over time. In my early years, I would have thought gay marriage was wrong, immoral, even crazy. That's how brainwashed I was. Nowadays, I'm the complete opposite. Why shouldn't 2 people stay committed and enjoy the rights of any other married people ? What business is it of mine ? How does it harm me if they want to do that ? And I think it should be called "marriage" so that it is recognized as equal to other marriages in every respect.

What a cop out. Unless it's mandated at the Federal level there is no "right". How can anything be a "right" if each state gets to spin it the way they want?

Right is right and wrong is wrong, there is no in between.
If your a man and feel the need to pump another man, do you feel it is right?? Would you run out afterwards and tell the whole world how you like chocolate on your dip stick???
Most of us would puke just thinking about it.
And you are a woman who feels the need to...............I'M not even going there!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately this is coming to a realization in our near future because our children have been brain washed into thinking that this is alright by our teachers. Live and let live?? Right is right and wrong is wrong!

I highly doubt that Mary Cheney includes polygamous families in her definition of "families" yet anyone who disagrees with gay marriage is surely a bigot in her eyes. This is the hypocrisy of gay marriage proponents. They don't really want "marriage equality" they just want the definition expanded to include their definition and still exclude others.

Intolerance? Have you examined your own intolerance? Denying people their civil rights because you don't like them is intolerance. Get that?
Marriage, BTW is a contract- all in the U.S. are "sanctified" by the state. That you paste a religious wallpaper over them may be great for you, but remember, Judges, civil authorities and others are licensed to perform marriages. Don't impose YOUR narrow views on others.

    _______________
Ummm, Bob? You do realize same-sex couples cannot reproduce biologically, right? True, there are options (like adoption, and guess what? Just like marriage itself, adoptions must be approved by the state.

Now for extra credit- explain "normal". Hint: it isn't just what you want.

Other news sites are reporting more, such as Mary Cheney's Facebook post in her opposition to her sister's beliefs:

“It’s not something to be decided by a show of hands,” Mary Cheney wrote.

And to emphasize that she was not shying away from drawing attention to her view, Mary Cheney concluded her Facebook post: “Please like and share if you agree.”

I agree with Mary, but found it kinda funny that after saying this matter shouldn't be decided by popularity and votes, she asks for "likes and shares" (essentially votes) to determine its popularity!
