McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

- CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

Why are football team owners even meeting with prime ministers of other nations? Walk into the lion's den, and, yes, you might just get your Super Bowl ring taken. Kraft's lucky they didn't take his wallet, too. In any case, he ought to stop whining about it and chalk it up to a Lesson Learned.

    Dear John McCain –

With all that's going on right now, this was a pretty stupid comment. Please concentrate on the task at hand and do your level best, along with your colleagues in the Senate, the House, the Cabinet, and the White House to plot a course of action in what can only be described as a no-win situation.

McCain must be getting a nice donation in his pocket to make this unimportant subject get any attention with all the crap going on in the world.

Funny, Mr. McCain, I always thought the worst thing you could do is lose a lot of innocent peoples' money through financial hanky panky – perhaps you should reimburse all the lost money from savings and loan fiasco ? Hi hoy. Silverado – here come the "Keating Five" .

Excuse me but when did it become property of the US Congress?? that ring belongs to the one who earned it and for sure this congress has not earned a single thing except the graft and corruption that happens on a daily bases....

I understand what the ring symbolizes, but I am sure they can make another one for Mr. Kraft. If its about the cost of the ring then the Patriot fans should start a collection for Mr. Kraft at the gates of his stadium.

@ Stephen. It's not about the cost of the ring, Kraft is worth $2.3 billion and owns a very successful NFL team. He wouldn't even notice the money is gone.

I'm with 'VENOM' and 'Fair is Fair' on this. With all that's going on right now, this isn't worth anybody in government spending even one moment of thought about.

Many Republican New Englanders might consider "maverick" McCain's massive bungles during his 2008 presidential campaign as the worst thing(s) one could do to a modern-day New Englander.

I agree with BH. Just get another one. I can't believe that whoever makes the rings wouldn't agree to make another one considering what happened to it.

"I understand what the ring symbolizes,"

I'm glad someone does, because I don't. From where I'm sitting, it's a meaningless trinket.

Actually, it'd be kinda funny if we went to thermonuclear war over it, ending All Life As We Know It. For ... a ring. Calling Dr. Strangelove?

Can't you guys tell McCain was making a funny.....(joking). My thoughts, however; I would not doubt that Putin just took the ring. He strikes me as that kind of guy. This guy does not like the US and would do anything to jab us...i.e. taking in traitor, Edward Snowden. I just wonder what Edward Snowden feels about Putin shrugging his shoulders over the use of chemicals by Assad? Both he and Putin only care about their own selfish interests; so what if 1400 Syrians were gassed by Putin's friend? The cold war hasn't ended with this guy and never will. He can never be trusted. As Reagan said...."trust but verify."

Tell the owner to file a report with the police and the US Embassy. McCain should keep his mouth shut on this issue.
