McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

How embarrassing. It was obviously a gift, because Kraft would not have let Putin walk off with it if it wasn't. Let him keep the ring and move on. Let's not start a war over a super bowl ring, that if he wanted, he could have another made just like it.

Kudos for one upmanship for humiliation. That ought to keep Putin red faced while we bomb Syria. Bet that ring turns up soon or he will never hear the end of it. Anytime a US politician wants to knock Putin down a notch, the ring will be brought up.

McCain's presentation may have sounded tongue in cheek, but if Kraft did not giver the ring to Putin and wants it back, Putin, showing a bit of humility – if possible – and hand the ring to Obama at their unofficial meeting.

My goodness – what a gormless, mentally lost, tasteless nut. Next I suppose he will be frothing at the mouth to bomb Russia. No wonder we are in the mess we are in. He should be in charge of something non dangerous – perhaps running his bath.

He should have said that when his pal Bush was in office. Perhaps we should go to war over a bowl ring. This way-too-old-to be-in-charge-of-anything should retire. Half of the people in office are too old to remember what they had for breakfast.
