McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) – When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

– CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

McCain crashed training planes, finished at the bottom of his USNA college class ... dumped 1st wife after she was crippled in car wreck. He's a poor excuse of a human.

Let's bomb Russia over the SuperBowl Ring. It's as good a reason as we got for bombing Syria. Punishing Syria might make sense, if we punished every Nation for their internal evil deeds. The only reason we will punish Syria is because we can. And that's a horrible reason. How do we do it without killing innocent Syrian citizens?

McCain is brain dead, when you reach a certain age you really need to get out of government, these old fools hold you're, your children and the fate of our nation in there hands, we all need to get down on our knees and pray.

Come on people...is it really THAT big of a deal-?

This is EXACTLY the reason that John McCain [war hero] should NOT be president. Attention to this tiny personal issue just illustrates his innate foul temperament and willingness to make a mountain out of a mole hill. I like the guy, but Barack Obama is far smarter and more calculating.

McCain and Kraft should be ashamed of themselves. What a couple of untrustworthy snakes they've outed themselves to be.

Hey McCain, How about working on resolving the Syrian issue instead of wasting time talking about something as insignificant as a ring.

After today's announcement by the House Dem and GOP leaders backing an attack upon Syria, do we need further proof that our government is now completely useless to the people? McCain gives it to us right here. He's concerned about a Super Bowl ring.

Stop crying about the ring for Christ's sake! It makes Kraft and our Govt look rediculous. Kraft handed him the ring and he put it in his pocket. Now Putin has a conversation piece in his living room. Putin is loving this. He has Snowden and the ring, and we are crying like babies. Stop it already! Get over it and move on. You are not getting the ring back.

This is a national embarrassment for the USA. We are really going to bother the president of another country about a stupid ring? A crappy ring really needs to brought up by one of our supposed leaders? John McCain, please tell me your just trying to out-clown our vice-president to lighten up the mood with Vlad!

    Hey McCain,

While visiting Russia last year,I lost my tote bag at the St. Petersberg airport. Put yourself to good use and get it returned for me. Thanks.

John McCain it is a good thing that Obama beat you 6 years ago. You can not be trusted around the world. You keep going to Syria (you might have something to do with the gas) and you keep telling other countries what to do. Why don't you get involved in making United States better by more jobs and lower college cost and increase the economy?

Actually if you read an earlier article, Putin asked to try on the ring and after he did he said he liked it, pocketed it, and walked away while two bodyguards came between him and Kraft. Putin was using Kraft as a way to snub the US...politics.

McCain's cognitive capabilities are deteriorating. All he can still grasp is that ridiculous ring issue. What a waste of time in the midst of a sensitive political crisis.
