McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

- CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

You do know that wars comes from the wrong words said to the wrong people

Seriously? Typical politician. The country is going to hell in a hand basket and a RING is what's important! We used to have leaders. Today we have nothing but politicians that are bought and paid for by corporations. They don't lead, they only do what they're told by the highest bidders. It's our country yet we stand by doing nothing while this nations politicians (lawyers) line their pockets destroying it. There's no fixing this mess. OH they'll tell us there is, that they are working on it... How many times have we all heard that? Any time this government works on anything they always seem to screw it up for us, the people! Yet they ( the politicians) get fatter. I don't care if you are republican or demorcrat, it's just the way it is and will be till we the people put a stop to it. Have you ever stopped to notice that it's always the politicians that play us against each other? And we fall for it everytime. A country divided cannot stand. We are divided and it's the politicians that have divided us. So take your ring, your vacations, your golf excursions, your expensive retreats the we pay for. Plot your course to keep the people of this country divided on our dime. Attack us with your spying, your tax collectors, your lies, your divisions, your brainwashing, your wars...I mean, why not, we let you!

Sigh, I wish McCain would retire and go bounce his great grand kids on his lap or something. Most of our problems is old politicians.

Just shows that McCain has no understanding of Russians whatsoever and then he is surprised they don't support him in Syria. You don't mess with Russians for no reason because you only make them angry and stubborn, that is just their genetics from surviving unending wars. The angrier they get the more stubborn they get. And the very last thing you should do is threaten them unless you intend to go ahead with it.
You tread lightly, speak softly and calmly and then you just might get somewhere.

"Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria...". So I looked it up, and *surprise surprise* one of Syria's major exports is....OIL! Imagine that. Wonder if that's why the U.S. is interested in Syria?

"This man is getting pathetic. He should retire while he has a shred of dignity left"

He's already a Republican. There's no dignity at all for McCain. Too late anyway.

I guess we need to worry about John McCain and Republican talk radio while we drop bombs on the enemy to help out the other enemy we've been fighting for the last 12 years. Makes sense why this country is in the bunghole it's in.

McCain had Putin pegged as the cheap thug that he is from Day One. While evetybody else was swooning over Putin 12 years ago, McCain said that when he looked in Putin's eyes, he saw three things: "K-G-B"

It's a shame that our country wasnt smart enough to elect him in 2008 when we had the chance. If we had, leaders around the world wouldn't be laughing at us the way they are now, especially those in the Kremlin.

And Steve, John McCain has more dignity in his little finger than you'll ever have in your entire life.

Really guys! Mr. Craft already said that the bodyguards got in the way and would not let him get the ring back. If it was your ring and someone stole it would you want someone to help you get it back. Thank you John for doing something for your citizens. Some of us still respect you for everything you have done for our country! Return whats not yours! President Obama please get our ring back!
