McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) – When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

– CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

Jesus Christ, can't we buy him a one way ticket to Syria. Obama wants to start a war, and he is focused on a ring, and than he is caught playing poker at the hearings because he was bored, well. I am bored to death hearing about his nonsense.

Mr. McCain has this stubborn desire to bomb a sovereign country before really finding out if this chemical attack was staged by the rebels and/or other interested parties. Why would Assad, while clearly winning a civil war, risk the international retaliation and order a chemichal attack? it makes no sence at all. Regarding the "ring issue", if I was Putin, I would gift this ring to a charity that helps adopted children. I would do it not because Mr. McCain wants it back, but because this piece of jewelry has lost its charm and is no longer "welcomed" in Russia. Let it serve a better purpose! I don't believe it was stolen in 2005, it's ridiculous, and I do think Mr. McCain should not be talking about it. It shows his pure hatred and anger towards Russia and his lack of desire to understand real issues at hand.

Russians are a people we have never been best friends with and in turn have never trusted. So my question is this: Why do you give a liar and a thief the family jewels? And you let him put it in his pocket? Kraft needs to give up trying to recover from his foolishness and McCain needs to get back to the old folks home before they issue a silver alert for him.

I'm guessing Putin doesn't give a crap about the ring and quite frankly neither should anybody else. Don't these characters have better things to do?

Mr. McCain has this stubborn desire to bomb a sovereign country without really finding out whether this chemical attack was staged by the rebels or any other "interested parties". Why would Assad, while clearly winning a civil war, order a chemical attack and risk a retaliation from the international community? It makes absolutely no sense. Regarding "The Ring" issue, if I was Putin I would give it to a charity that helps adopted children that are often abused after they are adapted. "The Ring" has lost its charm if is longer welcomed as a gift and it should now serve a better purpose! As to Mr. McCain talking about it, it is ridiculous. It just shows his anger and hatred towards Russia and his unwillingness to seek and accept the truth.

Why don't we send Idiot McCain and his Partner in Stupidity Graham on a world tour – He is apparently ready and willing to take on the entire world and no affront to the United States is too insignificant for this mental midget. I am looking forward to McCain and Graham and each and every one of their first degree relatives – leading the charge into Syria, North Korea and it looks like poor Russia is in trouble as well. I know that I will sleep better once the Super Bowl ring is back on American soil.

Here goes my Senator from Arizona again.
He and his buddy Graham are getting worse and worse. Aren't there more important problems to solve.
Mc Cain, how about looking at some serious problems we have in Arizona, instead of pocking your nose into everything that goes on in the world, including a stupid NFL Ring.

common sense: why would he be handing a president a ring? to look at it? do you really believe that?
it was a present from a pathetic man that can not keep his word.

McCain is a senile old war monger who is beginning to scare me; hopefully, the people of Arizona will not re-elect him next time.

McCain is a senile old man who needs to hang it up. He is nothing more than a warmonger who thinks military action solves all problems. I hope and pray the people of Arizona recall him or at least do not re-elect him.

McCain, you get the ring and stick it where the sun don't shine! I despise Obama and actually voted for you based on your past heroism, but you've now lost it all - retire already, PLEASE!

Read the article and watched the tape. The headline doesn't reflect the message. Clearly he was joking and poking at the topic. In no way did I interpret a demand for the ring. Maybe I'm missing something because it sure looks like a lot of responses on here reflect otherwise.
