McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

- CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

McCain should stick to card playing while the debate over commitment to a new war goes on. He is an example of why we don't need professional legislators in congress.

Uh, hmm, let's see what is more important: the ring or Russian support for a Syrian dictator subjugating and killing his oponents and sending two million into exile after killing 100,000 of their relatives. Let me get an American silver dollar to flip because this is such a tough decision.

It's not my bowl ring. What was Kraft doing with Putin anyway–trying to make more millions. Let Kraft buy a new one

Something isn't right in John McCain's head. I think he's starting to show the signs of early Alzheimer's, one of which is diminishing judgment.

Really???...World's about to blow up, economy in ruins, and you're worried about a superbowl ring??? All you people are entirely too stupid to represent me.

What is McCain thinking??? With all of the serious issues on the table, he is fixated on the ring? Maybe it is time for John McCain to retire.

We need our members of Congress tested for senility before they can start opening their loud mouths.

Senator McCain's approach to Russia is appropriate for what that country has become since its communists murdered the Czar and his family. Many of my mentors lived in Russia before the revolution: what glory that was!
