McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

This is just the start of what the world is going to take from us with the weak president that we have. He is the laughing stock of the entire world and noone fears us anymore. He needs to keep his mouth shut for the next 21/2 years and continue to campaign, that's what he does best. A leader he IS NOT!!! God bless America!!!

How about we actually try not to piss off our enemies at this pretty delicate political time. McCain, shut your old yapper. You're out of your element here. It's a piece of jewelry... let's not forget that pretty large detail before we make this a bigger news headline.

Senator McCain, it is obviously time for you to retire. You had a great run, sadly it is over.

...and there you have it. The fate of humanity literally rests on the outcome of a couple of hormonally imbalanced geezers arguing over a super bowl ring.

:IT's just a ring and Kraft has other ones. We all know that Putin and Russia are crooks so let it go and don't trust him.

I understand what the ring symbolizes, but I am sure they can make another one for Mr. Kraft. If its about the cost of the ring then the Patriot fans should start a collection for Mr. Kraft at the gates of his stadium.
No, you don't. Because if you truly understood the ring's symbolism, then you never would have made such a remark. Each ring is a unique one of a kind piece based upon common casting mold, one which I highy suspect no longer is in existence. Creating a substitute would be like somone giving you an imitation substitute for someone taking your Stradivarius violin.

From what I read previously, Putin doesn't have the ring and he was going to commission a special ring to replace it. I would take him up on his offer.

Although not always in political agreement, I've kind of liked McCain. Now, though, it seems that he's "enjoying" what many do as they gain age – lose all filters. If he thinks it, it comes out of his mouth. Then again, the ring thing was pretty outrageous. Putin reminds me of released felons I've come across – one does not "loan" anythiing as they believe because you put it in their hands, it's theirs.

Proof that shiny things distract the GOP. C'mon Senator, you can be more significant than this. C'mon CNN- this isn't news!

Go to bed old man. This was done and over with months ago. Apparently he never got the memo. Last time I checked, McCain didn't play for the Patriots so he has nothing to do with "our" ring.

Although the joke is funny (as is the fact that McCain actually has some sense of humor left), I don't think it deserves its own ticker entry, because the headline is designed to make him look deranged.

Oh, John!!! Don't you have American Jobs you should be creating? If you're NOT creating jobs, you're a corporate and/or governmental parasite and should have your taxes raised 50%. Get with the Program John or get off the turf.

What are you talking about? The ring was taken during the Bush administration, which apparently didn't want to offend the Russians or Putin. Pres. Obama has nothing to do with the ring's loss apparently being condoned by the Bush administration.

Return our ring? ... When did this bozo win a ring? ... On the other hand, I wouldn't put my hand of fire for Rober Kraft; come one, what was a business man like him doing in Russia? ... Obviously he was entertaining the idea of investing over there, and if he was meeting Bladimir Putin, wouldn't he have tried to put Putin in his pocket and to do that Bladimir Putin had to pocket the ring... Come on! ... It's very clear!... now that the guy didn't get the consessions he wanted, he wants he ring back... Get over it!

You don't have to care for McCain's politics, but at least respect him. He honorably served in combat and was a prisoner of war. Some of the comments I'm seeing are harsh.

You need to remember that the Old West is used only for historic reference–you are so old you don't even get modern communication. Going to stir the waters over something as stupid as a superbowl ring? A private matter between two men–not a political matter? There was more reason for not voting for you in the presidential run than your idiotic choice of Palin as a running partner. Your ideas are obsolete McCain–and you shouldn't be trying to speak for our country.
