McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

McCain is an embarassment. First the guy says its a gift.
Then he says he wants it back.

Then McCain says it was stolen. Well its no wonder McCain wants to fight every war he hears about – the way he thinks is a little bizarre.

As a rule, NEVER take a ring off to let someone "check it out"...

Don't we have more important things to discuss? How is this even news worthy?

McCain needs to be muzzled and placed in a retirement home. He is one of the primary reason we have the fool in the White House today that we do. If the GOP had nominated almost anyone else in 2008, Obama would have lost.

Nice to know this is what we pay McCain over 175K a year for: to issue repo threats over a ring. Now, what else has Senator McCain done this year to earn that salary taht have actually resulted in something positive?

If Kraft got the business deal he was looking for in Russia we would not be hearing anything about the ring. The deal disappeared and so did the ring. haha

McCain is not helping this situation in any way. It is time for the man to retire before his career is completely tarnished by his senile ramblings.

Did they break up or something, and now Mr. Kraft wants his ring back?

First of all, those chiding McCain because he is "old"- hate to break it to you folks, but someday you, too, will be OLD. Unless you prefer the alternative to not getting old– which last time I checked is d.e.a.d.
Okay, that said, I do agree that McCain needs to stay out of the Putin/Kraft/SuperBowl Ring argument. It's none of McCain's business– Kraft has multiple versions of this story– and it should be between Putin & Kraft. I think there are WAY more important things for our Senators to worry about than a darn football ring belonging to a man with umpteen zillion dollars.
BTW, I am one of those OLD people other commentors seem to like to malign.... 🙂

There must be something in the air or water in Arizona that poisons the minds of these wackos. Senators, Police Chiefs and Governors all totally out of it! McCain is an embarrassment. Can't wait till he is gone.

    @Texas Anne,

I agree about the ageist comments. Knock it off, people. McCain is not a fool because he's old. He's just a fool.

Senator McCain is still trying to get back at his Viet Nam captures by wanting to fight everyone else in the world. He is the exact opposite of President Obama and that is why he lost. Americans are sick of the old way...if it's in our "national interest" we have a right to start a war? What an open-ended phrase that is. What they are really saying is, "if it's in the interest of the oil barons in the U.S. that makes it justifiable." No wonder so much of the world see us as we saw Britain in 1776. Obama wants to help the humanitarian cause but will not start an all-out war. McCain wants to escalate every conflict and wants the U.S. to be a bully. Sorry you were held captive for years, and thank you for your service, but please, let's move on. See what war did to you, and you survived!

If I had a super bowl ring, I'd demand Putin return it as well. I wouldn't have tolerated him putting it in his pocket in the first place. Why would Kraft even want to give Putin his ring? i could care less about Russian/American interests. That's good for politicians but Kraft isn't a politician.
