McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) – When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

– CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

Why would our Congress even consider giving these Russian thugs an audience? Everything the Russians do is designed to undermine the US and if any of our representatives even consider any support of the Russians, they should be put on the first plane to live there permanently. Now is the time for our whole country to unite behind our Commander in Chief to show the world what we are all about. There is no place in our government for traitors. As for the ring, lesson learned. NEVER trust a Russian. They are low life bullies and criminals and PUTIN IS A JOKE.

Phyllis.... the Soviets helped tear down the wall. Instead of alienating them, let's see what we can do to get them back....

Please McCain, stop your stupidity. Even if Putin stole WHO GIVES A DAMM! What you all need to do is to talk with the Russians about Syria. You need to talk to China about Syria. I see a desert VIETNAM in the making. When all of this smoke has cleared you will see the body count just get larger and larger and some of it will be our own BLOOD!

McCain, you have stayed too long at the fair, time to retire before you start WWIII. You have outlived your usefulness to this cvountry and have become a liabillity. Retire and live off your reputation as a war hero.

Knowing Mccain, he will most likely start lobbying for a military strike against Russia to get the ring back. I'm serious.

What is with the old war horses anyway? All they want to do is rattle their sabers and rant! A last hurrah? Maybe better if guys like this just spend their time telling kids to "GET OFF MY LAWN!" instead of trying to stir up bad feelings on an international scale!

That's laughable. The Russians have been in Syria for decades. So much so that they have built a naval port on the coast.

John McCain, the man who believed Sarah Palin was qualified to run the Earth, is batting 1 for 2 today: "We should have invaded Syria two years ago" (swing and a miss), and "Putin should return the ring he stole" (home run).
