McCain to Russia: Bring back the Super Bowl ring

(CNN) - When a Russian delegation comes to Washington to talk about Syria, Sen. John McCain hopes they bring back New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft's super bowl ring.

"I was thinking this morning the worst thing you could do in the Old West was to steal another man's horse. I would think in New England the worst thing you can do is steal another man's Super Bowl ring," the Arizona Republican joked Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin tried on the ring when Kraft met with him during a visit to St. Petersburg in 2005. Kraft said at an event this summer that Putin put it in his pocket and kept it, and that he wants to see it returned, according to the New York Post.

The Patriots' owner said in 2005 he received a call from the White House telling him it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to claim it was a gift to Putin, the Post reported. Kraft said in June that he played along. A few days after the 2005 incident, amid confusion as to whether the ring was a present or was kept by mistake, Kraft issued a statement saying it was a gift.

That's the way Putin sees it, too, the president's spokesman said in June.

"What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird," Dmitry Peskov said. "I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift."

Russia, which has major trade deals with Syria, is sending a delegation to Washington for "dialogue" with members of Congress, the Kremlin said Monday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama leaves Tuesday night for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Obama is scheduled to meet with Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday

- CNN's Ashley Killough, Alla Eshchenko and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

Kraft went to Russia and drank to much Russian Vodka and can't remember giving away the ring. The worst thing you can do is ask for a gift back. Kraft should learn not to drink when he travels overseas.

I can't believe this is what our elected officials are paid to do....what a bunch of fools there are running this country.
These are the same people debating about bombing Syria today with our country's reputation at stake. We are doomed...

Isn't Mr. Kraft a big enough boy to handle this on his own, if in fact Mr. Putin stole the stupid ring from him or not? Who the heck would want a Super Bowl ring with New England as champions anyway?

Why is this guy still talking? He does not run the foreign policy of this country. He lost the election. It's not his place.

Can McCain and the Federal government think of any new ways to embarrass our country? Maybe we should keep our eyes on the prize, which is to IMPROVE relationships, not strain them further...

Yes, stealing Kraft's ring was an absolutely classless act, especially coming from a head of state. However, this action pales in comparison with the decisions the leaders of the world must make in regards to Syria.

What an embarrassment this is! Asking for a gift back? Calling Putin a thief? Talk about diplomacy! International relations! Im totally convinced politicians are really just clowns here for our amusement, and serve no actual purpose.

Good Lord, sounds like high school "girl" drama. Just chalk it up as a "learning" experience Mr. Kraft and don't give your class ring away unless you mean it! Or better yet, look at it as fostering international relations. What ever you decide to do, for god's sake GET OVER IT.

    Ok now I'm angry.

Prop up Syria all you want. Support dictators who use WMDs against their own people, fine, that's your call, enjoy.

But mess with a Super Bowl ring? Now we do need US involvement here!

Everyone is over reacting. I don't believe for one second McCain was being serious about the ring, to me and most others who don't see things as left or right only. He was throwing a punch right back at the Russians, who for weeks have been calling the American government a bunch of liars. Yes it is just a ring, no I don't think Bob Kraft or McCain are to worried about getting it back, it's more about asking how a petty thief can call someone else a liar. Stop whining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I trust McCain on matters of war more than any other politician. The guys biggest mistake was Palin had he chosen someone else he might have had a chance. Kermit the Frog would have been a better choice than Palin.

I would think my good senator would have more important things to do now than get caught up a tangent over a rich man's ring. But tangents and his bad temper still betray him. I say job well done, senator, but it's time for you to retire to Sedona.
