Biden wants Napolitano on Supreme Court

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden made it clear Friday how he feels about departing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

"I think Janet Napolitano should be on the Supreme Court of the United States," he said Friday morning at her going away ceremony.

His statement was met with raucous applause by those attending, including current and former cabinet secretaries, law enforcement officials, and Attorney General Eric Holder.

Napolitano announced in June she would leave her current position this month. She's now preparing to start her next gig as president of the University of California system.

As President Barack Obama was choosing Supreme Court nominees in 2009 and 2010, Napolitano's name was floated as a potential contender to replace retiring Justice David Souter and Justice John Paul Stevens. He ultimately tapped Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, respectively, for the nominations.

Napolitano, 55, has a law degree but has never been a judge. A former Democratic governor of Arizona, Napolitano was also a onetime U.S. attorney and state attorney general.

While in private practice, she was a lawyer for Anita Hill when she testified in the 1991 Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings for the high court.

During her tenure as homeland security secretary, she was criticized strongly for her department's initial response - and her public statements - to the Christmas 2009 attempted terror bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 80, is the current court member most frequently mentioned as the next to step down, but she has voiced her intention to stay on as long as possible.

    To Rudy NYC:
Robert Bork was over qualified for the post on the Court. Bork could not get past the nomination process because he fired an out-of-control Democratic operative and Kennedy cohort, Archibald Cox, in his witch hunt following Watergate. When Richardson resigned and Ruckelshouse retired, Bork was the next in line to terminate the employment of a special prosecutor who had to go completely off the reservation in lining up cooperative witnesses, with guarantees of immunity, to build a case against the President. While Nixon entrapped himself in trying to cover-up the burglary mess, most of what followed was a trumped up, manufactured case. As a result, Robert Bork was black-balled for life.

If Janet Napolitano was actually appointed to the supreme court (lower case intended), how many dikes would there be on the court, two or three? I cannot think of anyone I would want less than this goose stepping N a Z i. And any member of the republican party (lower case again) voted to confirm her I would hope that that was their last official act as a representative or senator.

  7. Just say NO to JOE!!!

I am shocked, appalled, nay petrified that Joe Biden is one heart beat away from the presidency with this sort of judgement. I guess he's not interested in running in 2016 with these sort of insane statements. There are just too many to ignore at this point.

Rudy – that was intended to be humorous, right? Bork was a legal genius. Please don;t compare this towering god of immense intellect with the stenched naval lint from a decomposed orangutang which is Big Sis...
    ------------------
It was intended to be serious. The infamous "Saturday Night Massacre" was the final nail in Nixon's term in office, and it was Bork, serving as the hatchet man working for a political bribe, who did the dirty work for Nixon.

The actions that Bork took that weekend are the number one reason why his nomination was denied. Rumors at the time said that Nixon had promised he would nominate Bork to the SCOTUS if he fired the Watergate special prosecutors and investigators, which was in itself highly illegal. The only thing that probably stopped Bork from being prosecuted for his acitons was Nixon's resignation.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should step down. Or else, she must be tested for memory loss and dementia, among other illnesses, and thoroughly evaluated to stay on the post. The Supreme Court is in dire need of fresh blood- really!.

Don't we have any people with brains in this country? How are all these total morons getting into these important govt jobs? We need to put term limits on the Supreme Court before they totally destroy America. Why are they allowed to stay for life? That's the dumbest thing I ever heard of.
