The Israel fear: A careful outreach to balance Syrian threat

Washington (CNN) - As President Barack Obama and his administration make their case for a military strike against Syria, officials from the president on down worry the regime's chemical weapons stockpiles could eventually endanger America's friends.

"If fighting spills beyond Syria's borders, these weapons could threaten allies like Turkey, Jordan and Israel," the president said in his speech to the nation Tuesday night.

I would not have predicted that the GOP would have thrown Israel beneath the bus so fast. If the diplomatic response put forward by Mr. Putin does not work, clearly Israel will be vulnerable. Perhaps that building of distance between the U.S. and Israel on the part of the GOP is a good thing if what we see in the GOP is an actual shift in alignment, rather than their usual knee-jerk reaction to all things put forward by the President.Such distance may make the U.S. look more like a fair player in the region, rather than simply Israel's ally against all others down the road.

I'd be more worried about the Russian reaction than Assad's reaction to U.S. military action against Syria. Anything that Assad might do will have Russia's tacit support, both politically and militarily. The Russians have already promised to *immediately* replace any Syrian military hardware that the U.S. might destroy, which raises the possibility of a sustained and prolonged bombing campaign dropping rounds on top of Russians

This might be a good time for the whole world to look at the viability of military action as a credible answer to problems between Nations. It only seems to help sometimes; makes matters worse many times. War was a solution in the Old Days, when it was fought mostly between armies. Now, it destroys too much.

After watching right wingnut senator Cornyn demand a full scale war in Syria two weeks ago, and now does not want a strike against the chemical stockpiles, we know that the only hope of the GOP is to undermine our leadership like a true domestic terrorists. Since Putin has promised to imprison gays, most republicans suddenly have fallen in love with Him as well, and take in every word of his with a sigh.

and yet the clueless wonder in the white house wants to attack syria an dgive them an easy reason to broaden the conflict. or worse weaken assad, who is the only thing standng between all the jihadis and terrorists and the chemical weapons.

the fact is that the fighting has not and will not spill beyond syria's border right now as this is a civil war. obama is just making up stupid ridiculous scenarios to try and justify his insane act of attacking syria.

obama comes off as more and more clueless every time he opens his mouth. he is in way over his head.

If we can be sure that the Syrians are honest, forthwright and clear about getting their WMD out to where it can be destroyed, then the whole world will be safer. I just don't trust the current government because they haven't said that they will stop the war on the Syrian people to get rid of these weapons.

I don't know, just saying. To be fair, you've got a fairly big lead yourself on the "clueless every time he opens his mouth" market of talking point ramblings.

REALITY CHECK: There has not been any "insane act of attacking Syria." You make yourself sound delusional when you complain about things that have never happened. What's even worse, you actually believe it.

Fear not!!"it was not because you are the largest of all Nations that The Lord set heart on you and choose you, for you are the smallest of all Nations. It was because Lord loved you." (Dt 7 ) . Just keep on calling the name of The Lord.

What a bunch of fodder. Israel can take care of itself. The only reason russian cares about this military arms and hardware sales. We should stay out of this conflict.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's exactly what Obama's first intentions were. He was the one that said there would be ramifications for crossing the red line which meant that we would attack Syria. This was what he told us until he changed his mind. I know it has never happened but it certainly was Obama's initial instinct and plan.

Would you rather have a neighbor who kills his own family , or take the risk of having a new neighbor take his place who might kill yours ?

If geographically Syria was Iran , we would already be involved .
