Navy Yard shooting: AR-15, back in the news - briefly

(CNN) - It has been called the most popular rifle in America, and it briefly returned to the spotlight after Monday's shooting at the Navy Yard: the AR-15.

A U.S. law enforcement official said Monday that gunman Aaron Alexis unleashed a barrage of bullets using an AR-15, a rifle and a semi-automatic handgun. Authorities believed the AR-15 was used for most of the shooting, the official said. The news prompted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of the strongest proponents of a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15, to issue a statement the same day asking, "When will enough be enough?"

    Just wait until the next mass shooting when the shooter is actually a good shot. You'll really see the carnage that a AR-15 can cause. I myself for one am an expert marksman with that rifle. The crazy thing is is that the AR-15 is not the worst rifle. There is actually just a 3 round burst(which is still deadly). But in comparison to an AK-47, which is non stop rapid fire, and has no chance of jamming, the AR-15 is small potatoes. Not to mention that you can get a 100 round banana clip for an AK.

    Again the liberals will demand and end to gun ownership. Remember people we have the right to bear arms.

    The AR-15: not needed for self-defense or hunting, but designed to kill as many people in as little time as possible. Why is it legal to own one, again?

    Oh that's right, it's not technically "military grade". Freedom!

    Reports are that he used a shotgun on the security guard and then grabbed the guards rifle and pistol. At least that was what both CNN and MSNBC reported that the FBI was saying. This leads to the question – do you wish to disarm the military police security force of such weapons?

    It is gun ownership for killing one another that I am against. Don't bother with your talking points. I've heard them all. Today will be no different than the last mass killing by gun talking points. Nor will the next mass killing be any different.

    Same story. Same talking points. Different day.

    @Jake NRA Member,

    I do remember the people have a right to bear arms. You don't need an AR-15, though. Just like you don't need a canisters of sarin or a nuclear warhead.

    Yes, as part of a well-regulated and well-trainied militia, under the authority of the PResident as Commander-in-Chief. It was designed to help provide for a common defense of the nation, as well as to hunt. The arguments about it being needed to protect citizens from government intrusion were made by people who never served a day under Washington and suffered under the inept handling of the war by the Continental Congress. The people the Right usually cites on the Constitution never speant a day under fire defending it: to them, it was an abstraction ( sort of like Ted Nugent).

    @Ken F,

    " do you wish to disarm the military police security force of such weapons?

    Um, yes, when they're not in theater overseas. I don't like the idea of MPs standing around a gate holding assault rifles, when a pistol should be necessary.

    If you're right about what happened, then the murderer simply took advantage of the assault rifle being there in the first place after he killed the guard. If the rifle hadn't been there, less people would have died.

    Oh and by the way, so much for the "if everyone carries, no one dies" argument, eh?

    What if you feel threatened by a policeman? Can you shoot them using a " stand your ground" argument? According to the gun huggers, I should be able to.

    --------
    There is no 3-round burst on an AR-15. If you were to put a three round burst kit into an AR15, you will get nothing but a single shot, followed by the hammer down on a live round.

    Yep unfortunately as sad as it sounds, it may take a shooting at one of these senators children schools to become reality for these blind and deaf senators. All these Senators do is turn the other way when something does not involve them personally, its a damn shame!!!

    sick of the killings? get rid of the good ol boys vote them out! All this talk of having a gun to protect yourself. In all these shootings no one shot back. Only time any of these gun nuts seem to shoot is when it is at an unarmed person. Or like the cop who just shot an unarmed man 10 times because he knocked on a door at 2am because he had been in a car accident.

    Actually, the people demanding and end to gun ownership are very few and far between. Most of the people complaining about having their guns taken away are doing so because they've been taught that "gun control" means taking your guns away.

    The President spoke about the shootings. Has anyone heard any Republicans say anything, yet? Or are they waiting for the NRA's official policy email to circulate among the ranks before any of them speak out. I think we are going to have to wait for the NRA to tell the Republicans what to say again. I know an entire week had passed after Newtown for the NRA to come up with that "good guy with a gun" talking point, and then the Republicans broke their silence, echoing NRA's remark.

    No, although in AZ. our crazed Republican Governor ordered flags at state buildings moved to half-staff for the week in "honor" of those killed. Naturually we have among the most egregious gun laws in the U.S. including "stand your ground". Fixing those would honor the dead, but I guess our state would hate to lose the cartel business.

    I'm just wondering ........do they come in all colors?? Should we give them out to the children to protect themselves in Kindergarten??

    Pure insanity. The gun manufacturers have twisted the 2nd amendment in knots. I was NEVER for banning all guns, I used to think responsible gun owners existed however lately I'm beginning to change. Especially after reading the 1000's of comments written by people who are dumb as dirt (no offense dirt) but are owners of near arsenals.

    "If the rifle hadn't been there, less people would have died"

    And you accuse the right of being naïve. What if the security guards had to defend against a terrorist attack by folks armed with assault weapons? Do they fight them off with clubs? There is no way you can guarantee that NOBODY will have access to these weapons, so the argument you make is ludicrous.

    Maybe we should also prohibit anyone from owning a car due to all of the deaths from car accidents, or prohibit the use of alcohol since about half of car accident deaths are a result of alcohol. More people die from this every year than due to assault weapons.

    @Wake Up People,

    I've seen assault rifles marketed to women in "feminine" hot-pink and other "fun" colors. I believe simple hunting rifles for kids are also painted in easter-egg colors, as well.

    Call it the Joe Camel effect.
