Boehner changes plans on Obamacare and funding bill

Washington (CNN) – He never said it publicly, but it was no secret House Speaker John Boehner did not want to tie defunding Obamacare to a bill keeping the government open. It's a high stakes strategy that could end up backfiring on Republicans if the government does shut down.

But now, thanks to unrelenting pressure from conservatives, that's exactly what he's doing.

Asked if he's lost control of the Republican caucus, House Speaker John Boehner responded that he was simply listening to his fellow GOP colleagues.

"Listen. We've got a lot of divergent opinions in the caucus and the key to any leadership job is to listen," he said Wednesday.

"You know, I was here during the (Newt) Gingrich era," he continued. "He had a little plaque that was in his office. And it was a management model: 'Listen, learn, help, and leave.' We listened to our colleagues over the course of the last week. We have a plan that they're happy with. We're going forward."

Boehner and other GOP leaders had originally crafted a legislative package that would have funded the government past September 30, the end of the fiscal year, and avert a government shutdown, while voting separately to defund Obamacare so as not to tie the two votes together.

But thanks in part to an unrelenting campaign by conservative groups during the August recess to push conservatives not to fund the government without defunding Obamacare, GOP House leadership announced Wednesday they will combine the two measures into one.

Obama: Let's avoid 'apocalypse'

While the bill will likely pass the House, it has little chance of going anywhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate, increasing the chance of a government shutdown.

Boehner announced the move following a closed-door meeting with House Republicans.

Now who's weak?? And who amongst us didn't see this coming?? The wealthy GOP is hellbent on destroying this country. This is our punishment for electing and reelecting President Obama. Boehner needs to resign because he damn sure can't run the House.

This has to be the most traitorous, treasonous Congress in the history ofthe U.S.

Boehner love's to talk about the President's "lack of leadership"- and here he caves in to the least rational, most radical membership in the House. Frankly, I hope the GOP shutdown the government. They won't achieve national office for a decade- if ever again.

No, not "conservative groups", Dana Bash. Tea Party fanatics.

John Boehner has lost complete control of our United States House of Representatives. I never thought I'd live to see the day that such ineptness as Boehner displays would be praised to the point of being re-elected year after year.

Nor did I ever think I'd see the day when a political party in the United States of America would allow itself to
[ fill in the blank ] on all the people in America by virtue of concentrating solely on their own personal re-election prospects.

People like you just want those who are ill, or old, to go away and die while insurance companies pile up enormous profits and pay their CEOs $10 million or more a year.

This man is useless. Say what you will about Nancy Pelosi, but she knew how to run the House of Representative. What is even more frightening, this man would actually be 2nd in line for the presidency. This is lunacy. He and his lunatic Tea Party friends should never talk about government wasteful spending: 41 votes to repeal the ACA and now this, which is going nowhere fast.

Millions of people fraudulently gettin gfree cell phones at our expense. Now Obamacare will be allowing people government subsidies without verification. Can you say rampant fraud? May be we should all get in on the Obama Free Healthcare Give-Away? Cancel out insurance, claim we have no income and get the government to pay for it for a year?

Government shutdown? Sure, why not. It doesn't care about our money. Wasting it by the billions and Obamacare was just another way to waste billions more.

Wouldn't it have been much easier for the American people to just NOT re-elect Obama? Could it be that the will of the country supports Obama and the will of select locations within the country supports republicans? Or is it only the will of the people with the will agrees with you?

Oh goody goody! The people get to suck wind, while the republicans whistle in the graveyard. And the really sad part, there are a few posting here that honestly believe the republicans are on the right track. Delusional doesn't come close to explaining it. There's something in the water, a sickness being ingested that eats the brain perhaps.

Teatroll Rosetta Stone says: "Are you daft? Why in the heck did you think we went hog-wild radicalizing our base immediately in response to Obama's win in November 2008? Do you seriously think the funding and organizational assistance provided to the neo-birchers wasn't gamed out and planned as a means of providing the rest of us with political cover for also behaving like extremists? God man...get a clue."

i and everybody else have no problem whatsoever with a simple law stating that insurance companies cannot deny people insurance for pre-existing conditions. that would have been a half page law to fix one major problem. we did not need 2,400 pages and 20,000 new regulations that obamacare has brought. the rest was a new government entitlement program designed to wreck the healthcare system in this country and leave the government in control of it.

A fascinating look into the delusional thinking of the Right.
First- how many unfactual statements are contained in the statement above? I count at least 4.
Second- it utterly ingnores that the GOP members of the House likely got elected through three things: their campaign on "jobs, jobs, jobs" (which they utterly failed to accomplish anything on); Gerrymandering, and political trend.
Third- it further ignores every radical action take by the same members- to take away civil rights of Americans; the War on Women and Women's rights; the slashing of Voting rights- which could affect millions of poor, monority and elderly voters.
Fouth-the usual birther/TEA Party name calling. The GOP respescts neither the concept of a federal government, nor the President of the United States.
The GOP is the Taliban in America. We had better deal with that threat seriously and swiftly if our nation and representative democracy are to survive..

the american people have elected a republican majority in the house for the last 4 years because of gerrymandering

    FIFY

Fact: the Dems won the majority of votes cast for House seats by a fairly large margin in 2012.

This is mind boggling flip-flop gutless Speaker Bonehead is making. If Obamacare is so terrible, why dont they have any alternatives put forward.
