Washington (CNN) - The political struggle over defunding Obamacare in the Senate may turn out to be not much of fight at all.
The House is scheduled on Friday to vote on the proposal that will be attached to a must-pass spending bill to fund the government.
But when it all goes to the Senate next week, Democrats now expect to strip the Obamacare provision without interference from most Republicans.
Though Republicans oppose the sweeping but controversial health care law spearheaded by President Barack Obama that is due to take effect in coming weeks, they appear to be boxed in procedurally.
Three GOP senators – Marco Rubio of Florida, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah - have strongly advocated defunding Obamacare as a condition for passing the spending bill, and they are expected to put up procedural hurdles.
But they may not get much support from their colleagues.
Emerging from a closed-door policy conference in the Capitol Thursday, several GOP senators, including those from the leadership, said they will vote for procedural motions that ultimately will let Democrats, who have a 54-46 majority, move to strike the Obamacare defunding language with a simple majority vote.
The first vote is expected as early as next Wednesday when the Senate moves to take up the bill. That vote would need 60 votes to succeed.
Many Republicans appear ready to join Democrats on that vote, as well as other procedural votes, because Republicans support the language defunding Obamacare.
After those procedural votes, because of the complex rules of the Senate, Reid is in a position to strike the health care provision with a simple majority of the chamber.
Democrats would vote to get rid of the language they oppose and Republicans would vote to keep it in. A vote on final passage, again only a simple majority needed, would come soon after the Obamacare language was removed.
The bill would be expected to pass the Senate and would then be sent back to the GOP-controlled House which would have to decide whether to pass it and keep the government running or defeat it and possibly see a government shutdown.
What a waste of time and effort by the Teapublicans! It will never go anywhere. Get to work you lazy bums and DO your jobs!!
Perhaps Americans wake up and decide it's time to will cut out government waste in 2014, and send all the Tealiban packing.
So, just as they did in passing Obamacare over the objections of a majority of Americans, Senate Democrats are preparing to say "Screw you!"
I am sick and tired if this legislation being called an epithet of Obamacare. It is ACH Enactment/Act. It now the law of the Land. Period. No more bragging, nagging. Do not be world's number one idiots. Yes, Hon'ble John Roberts passed this. Enough.
I have an Idea instead of repealing Obamacare how about the Senate put some of the Republican and Democrat job bills I think that should a bigger priory then deficit reduction right now.
Good try CNN...a political fight between who? Rational GOP veteran politicians and suicidal tea fools putting a gun to the heads of their party? Its certainly not the Dems (libruls) they're cooking up the popcorn and watching the the "waterloo losers" that still, after 41 votes to repeal A VETTED LAW, against the back drop of a easily re-elected president. Heck Pres. Obama won on that very policy. He certainly didn't run away from him like the Mittens Rome-in-around on lies. . One just can't image how really STUPID someone would have to be in trying this move. The analogies have been on every news feed today. The one I like most is "the party that twisted itself into historical exstinction" good riddens
All the votes the house has passed to eliminate Obamacare and not once has the senate voted on those bills? And the Dems say the republicans are obstructing the president? Honestly it looks like a dog and pony show! How many tax dollars spent on legal defense and pushing this down the taxpayers throats? If it ain't good enough for the congress and president and the unions and all the other exempt people the rest of us shouldn't be on stuck with it unless we chose to be on it! Lets have a special election and let the voters decide!
When John Boehner becomes terminally ill with lung cancer from smoking cigarets ,why should the American tax payer pay for his medical treatment ?
The uncle Sam ad was immature at best, but not a surprise. Can't wait to vote, maybe I'll do it two or three times, see, I can play too
Are the dems deaf? Can't they hear that the majority of Americans don't want Obamacare? Are they blind? Can't they see the trainwreck that they have created? Do they have to live with Obamacare for themselves and their families, or is only the serfs?
