House GOP launches shutdown battle by voting to defund Obamacare

Washington (CNN) – With one vote on Friday, the Republican-led House launched the latest spending battle in Congress - one that could bring a government shutdown in less than two weeks.

By a 230-189 vote almost strictly on party lines, the House passed a short-term government spending plan that would eliminate all funding for Obamacare.

Sadly these members of the GOP can trash progress, then trash the GOP. But there is no personal downside. Just like Hollywood, there is no bad publicity. They will retire, go on speaking tours, write books and be rich. Fighting a law that is already in place is the job of the Supreme Court and it has passed that already.

We need to join the rest of the progressive civilized world. As a progressive (not Democrat) I say that Obama made the first good steps with this. I've been bummed ever since the GOP killed this when the Clintons were pushing for available healthcare.

Yeah, more guns and less gun regulations will save us all, but health care for everyone is a death sentence for everyone!!!!!

The irony is that those folks who need it the most are against the Affordable Health Care Act. It's a real shame too. It might even help many from the tea party crowd fix the one tooth they have or pay for lapband surgery.

A good first step. Now strip all the funding for Social Security, Medicare, and other so called entitlements and this would be a great day.

"Burn down the Capitol. If that don't work, SECESSION"

Attacking the capitol is illegal and secession is forbidden by the constitution.

If you don't like a progressive lawful civilized nation, how about you personally secede and go to some other country that is OK with trashing the less fortunate and poor.

As a responsible adult, I can not accept 40 TEMPER TANTRUMS from the Republicans on ObamaCare, no matter how much they claim to be against it. They CAN NOT repeal it in the Legialative branch, they FAILED to get it declare INVALID in the Judicial branch, and they could NEVER get it signed by the Executive branch. Is the US Congress so lacking for REAL WORK / for REAL issues that they can afford to engage in this cirdle jerk? Move on.

If you strip all of the entitlements, there wouldn't be any voters left in red states.

The ones launching the shut-down battle are Obama, Reid and Pelosi – the three stooges. The GOP has no intention of shutting down the government. That is bulls....

What is with their unhealthy obsession with the Affordable Health Care Act? There's many resources out there for mental health issues. It's along the same lines with their constantly bringing up gay marriage and then turning the subject to pedophilia or bestiality. I wish they'd leave their fantasies to themselves!

Well I hope this action causes people to wise up and boot these conservative clowns from Congress

Highly unlikely as most of them were elected by their constituents to do eaxactly this, get rid of Obamacare. They will be rewarded with easy re-election for following the will of not only their constituents, but a maority of the American people. The Democrats jammed this disaster down our throats in 2010 and the American people mad ethem pay dearly by removing 66 of them from office. It is about time these politcians grew a spine and stood up for the American people.

What the GOP supporters failed to realize is these are bills that the Congress has already passed that need to be paid. Thats like going to the store charging a bunch of crap on your credit cards, then when the monthly bill shows up you decide your not gonna pay for it after you used the items (wars, tax cuts, etc).

Yup. What you're describing is bankruptcy. Andthat's exactly where this country is headed.

Reading some of the GOP supporters blogs on here, I can see why their party is becoming extinct. The older voters will soon die off and the tea party will have their 60 or so people in the House due to gerrymandering of the districts, and the moderate GOP will be back.

"Yup. What you're describing is bankruptcy. Andthat's exactly where this country is headed."

Good. And when it comes time to challenge the preferences that were handed out prior to bankruptcy, we'll be going after all of the nation's wealth that trickled UP to the insanely wealthy as a result of tax cuts, loopholes, preferential deductions, labor and employment regulations (and failure to regulate), plutocratic election processes and systems, etc., that have been redistributing the nation's wealth upwards for the past half century. Cry about it all you want, but there's clear precedent for precisely how this sort of "bankruptcy" plays out. Check France circa 1789.

The days of the irresponsible walking into hospitals and getting free care on the backs of those of us who do pay need to stop. It is a vast, hidden tax that no one but hospital accountants voted on. TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. What are the tea partiers going to do about that? Nothing, maybe because they are getting most of that free care.

LOL, that is just hilarious, do you really think they are going to pay now??? NO they are not, it will STILL be paid for through our premiums and tax payers!!! I do think we need health care overhaul but Obamacare is a joke, even some Dems have called it a train wreck (even some that helped create the bill). Let me put it this way, liberals want stricter gun control laws such as universal back ground checks. Well guess what, there is already laws in place BUT they were crappy laws that had very little substance. The same thing goes with Obamacare, don't implement a law that is half done, repeal the law until it can be created properly!!! I actually am ok with socialized medicine, but for EVERYONE, if you are going to have it have it for all not just a select few!!!! Obamacare will do NOTHING to help the average American, my premiums went up much more this year and last year than in previous years and Obamacare is the reason. You can say it is the health insurance companies but guess what, Obamacare is why they raised them!!!! As many have stated before, it is now up to Obama and the senate to shutdown the government. Congress gave you everything but funding for ONE program and a doomed program at that. Time for Dems to give a little, stop a shut down now and work on overhauling the bill immediately!!!

The way the Democrats did it, yes. And the death sentence is for this country, as this massive new government entitlement program bankrupts the country even faster while destroying the healthcare system that 80% of the country liked and wanted to keep. Obama and his many lies are now becoming very obvious. Keep your doctor? Keep your current plan?? Save money??? Won't pay a dime more???? Lies, lies, lies and more lies. Even the unions are screaming to get rid of this disaster. Why won't you lefties address THAT fact?

" work on overhauling the bill immediately!!!"

With what? What changes? What proposals have the GOP/Teatrolls made for "overhauling the bill"? At what point, if ever, have the GOP/Teatrolls ever credibly stated a willingness to amend the law to address particular, well-founded concerns about its structure and the manner in which it functions? What would be the replacement? Please be specific...48 million people without any form of health insurance are DYING to know.

    Not at all.
What jinx is describing is a THIEF, a SQUELCHER. Somebody who takes things on credit after giving his word that they will pay when the bill comes due and then decides not to.
Somebody whose word is worthless and without honor.
That's what this Republican spending-plan is taking going to make us.
A nation without honor and whose word means didly.

Shutting down the federal government is “the last thing we’re going to do,” Bachmann said.

It would seem that Rep. Bachmann disagrees with you. The GOP does intend to shut down the government. Why else would they lead us to the brink of doing so, holding the country hostage to their will?
