Peter King: Ted Cruz 'is a fraud'

Washington (CNN) - The government shutdown showdown is getting ugly.

Republican Rep. Peter King said Friday that his Republican colleague in the Senate, Ted Cruz, "is a fraud" who will "no longer have any influence in the Republican Party" after the House votes on a measure that could potentially lead to a government shutdown.

King made his comments while on his way to a Republican meeting, shortly before the House was set to begin debating, then voting on the bill. The legislation provides funds for the government to stay afloat past the end of the fiscal year on September 30, but only if money for Obamacare is cut out.

Ted Cruz: Obamacare fight 'just beginning'

The idea to tie the president's health care law to the government funding bill was aggressively pushed by Cruz and other Senate conservatives, including Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Mike Lee, this summer.

The House is expected to pass the bill, which will then go to the Democratic-controlled Senate where the Obamacare amendment will likely be killed. The bill would then be sent back to the House, which would have to decide whether to pass it and keep the government running, or defeat it and possibly see a government shutdown.

King, who's been strongly opposed to the bill, has essentially compared the strategy to a suicide mission.

"I hope people will get the message this guy is bad for the party," King said Friday, talking about Cruz, a potential 2016 presidential candidate. King is also a potential White House contender, as he has said he's thinking about running for president.

Asked if the House vote was more of a message to conservatives than to Obama, King said the vote is a signal that the GOP has "to take more realistic and practical approaches."

The congressman has said before that he can start ignoring the senator from Texas after the vote. He reiterated Friday he hopes that's still the case.

"We can't be going off on these false missions that Ted Cruz wants us to go on. The issues are too important. They're too serious, they require real conservative solutions, not cheap headline-hunting schemes," he said.

Cruz angered House conservatives earlier this week when he admitted in a statement that he doubts the Senate has enough votes to pass a government funding measure that also defunds Obamacare. He has nonetheless vowed to keep fighting in the Senate to generate support for the measure.

But with some Senate Republicans already saying they won't support Cruz in the effort, the chances of him succeeding so far appear unlikely.

They're so terrified of Obamacare going into effect, because they know once people actually HAVE it, they won't be able to turn it into a crazed boogeyman anymore, and it will be permanent, just like many other beneficial programs we have.

If the Republicans really believed Obamacare was going to be this horrible mess, they'd let it go through, just to ruin the Democrats. They know what will really happen, what is already happening – affordable health insurance for people who previously had to risk their life playing russian roulette with their health or who could not get health insurance at all.

How blind of you to use the term "leftist", which has the connotation of violent guerillas, to chastise people you disagree with.

Why risk shutting the government down over Obamacare? You all have already got sequestration's blanket cuts hitting all public sectors. Why not do your job, pass a budget (finally), and then work on repealing stuff?

If you are still in the mindset of labeling people "conservative and liberal," you have little understanding of politics and government. This is all part of a game, and our politicians and their outlets are hoping that you have little understanding of the issues.

No one thinks a lot of Peter King. he is a "has been" throwback to the old Gerald/ Ford Jacob Javits Republicans. How he even has security clearance is beyond me.
Let's examine in detail his connections to the IRA and gun running. Today we would call that Support for Terror and he would be in jail for 50 years.

Seems to me Americans had the chance to vote up or down on the ACA during the elections last fall... while they did not speak with one voice, they did vote by majority to affirm the President and his health care bill.... It is past time for the Republican party to get past this issue and get on with whatever pro-growth agenda they can cobble together..

Here's an idea for the GOP Representatives. Why don't you vote to defund your healthcare benefits. Talk about hypocrites.

Ted Cruz does not belong in the hierarchy of the U.S. Federal Government. He would possibly fit in quite comfortably in the NSDAP, though.

I'm sure that Wall Street appreciates this. It's one economic setback, after another. All of it,thanks to the GOP. It's like a horse with blinders on. The next election will be ruled, by what is happening right now. Billions of dollars could be wasted. Republicans will be held accountable.

Will someone please tell me how Cruz can be a potential contender for President. He was born in Canada, and we are certainly not part of the US. Where are all the Birthers on this issue, or is that only an issue for candidates who are non white?

What will Cruz decide should be defunded next – Medicare? Not a smart move for a party to decide which laws it will honor and which laws it will defund. But then again, Cruz is not the problem, its the bozos who voted for him.

Susan StoHelit, your very stupid to think that the Republicans would be allowed to pass the bill just to ruin the Demos. They "are" trying to "save" people from the train wreck of Obamacare. Sure it would be great to let it go through and show the Demos what a horror they have created for our health care, but that would not be "serving" the American people. I personally hope that it does not go through, but I feel that it will eventually pass because of stalemate. When it does, I do hope that it is great for americans, but I know that it is not so I will be looking forward to the Demo's downfall.
