Obama blasts Republicans at Congressional Black Caucus awards

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama blasted Republicans Saturday evening for risking a government shutdown in their effort to defund Obamacare saying, “It is time for these folks to stop governing by crisis."

President Barack Obama was speaking at the 43rd Annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Phoenix Awards Dinner. His speech focused on an array of topics, including health care, gun violence and creating economic opportunity.

Hitting at Congressional Republicans, Obama said, “You'd be willing to shut down the government and potentially default for the first time in United States history because it bothers you so much that we're actually going to make sure that everybody has affordable health care. Let me say as clearly as I can: It is not going to happen.”

Obama added, “We have come too far, we've overcome far darker threats than those. We will not negotiate whether or not America should keep its word and meet its obligations. We're not going to allow anyone to inflict economic pain on millions of our own people just to make an ideological point.”

Another theme of the night was gun violence, with the president citing recent mass shootings in Chicago and Washington’s Navy Yard. He also spoke of others “whose loved ones were torn from them without headlines sometimes, or public outcry.”

“We can’t rest until all of our children can go to school or walk down the street free from the fear that they will be struck down by a stray bullet.”

The president also returned frequently in his remarks to the topic of income inequality, economic opportunity and the need to build on the legacy of the civil rights movement, echoing the main themes of the evening.

The Phoenix Awards Dinner is part of the Congressional Black Caucus’ annual conference. This year’s dinner honored Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland); former president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Elaine Jones; and former President Bill Clinton, who was unable to attend the event but addressed the attendees in a video.

I really dont see any problem with the Repubs critising Obama policies in ethically acceptable wise form, comproming on Mr. president's major policy thrusts and insisting that Mr. President implements some of the GOPs desires. When the GOPS come to power they would have their opportunity to a revised status. The situation the loser party will from day one deliberately devise mechanism to run down every policy of a President to the point of ruining the country itself both economically and security wise is strange. Its my considered view its not democratic but rather kills democracy itself. This is simply because DEMOCRACY IS RULES BY MAJORITY. The President has moral obligation to implement the desires of minority, thereby expanding the Govt. Party's base. This said, what the Repubs need do is remove their threat, accept Obama's major budgetary thrusts and enlist the President's cooperation to implent the own desires( thats some). Their radical methods now are loose, loose game that will end up not getting any benefit for their peers, and likely make them loose another election.

I've said it a hundred times, I'll say it again. This latest blackmailing by the GOP all comes down to their "followers" being brainwashed. These people truly feel they are watching the news when they watch Fox or listen to Rush. They feel that Fox "spews" is truly saving them from the evil mainstream media. These type of people have no "drive" to do any research of their own and if you try to tell them the facts that you have obtained, they question your source or have a response of, "well I don't know". Basically they don't want to hear your facts or what they call your opinion. I deal with "these" people several times a week. I have lost business deals because these people think I am just plain stupid, even though I can tell them 20 facts to their 1, I'm still the stupid one for "liking" Obama in the first place. Fox, Rush the GOP and the Koch types have learned that "these" people will agree with anything they say. These people see politics as "our team must win at all costs". They believe climate change is a hoax without having any knowledge of the science behind it. They truly believe there level of comprehension is on the same level as the educated, experienced scientists who study it everyday. Rush said it was a hoax, is all they need to know. I can only shake my head in disbelief at their ignorance and lack of willingness to try to understand the real experts. So many of these people believe climate change isn't even happening, when in reality all scientists agree it happening. The argument is, is it man made or not. So again Fox and Rush are making millions deceiving and its working. That's why I always say FOX "spews" is destroying America. For once, google "ACA facts" and "CO2 Isotopes". There are many fact filled web sites where you can learn and hopefully see Fox and Rush are laughing at you all the way to the bank! ARE THERE ANY SENSIBLE REPUBLICANS LEFT? And when I say sensible, I mean, aware that Fox "spews" is bad for America.

And another thing.... There is a lot of biased "news" on TV, that is a fact! The difference between Fox and MSNBC is the lies! And I can already hear the right screaming, "oh right, MSNBC doesn't lie"?. No they don't! Prove me wrong! Google, "Hannity lies" then google "Maddow lies". Then when you are done, try to admit the truth!

They want to cut food stamps and thus declare war on children, no gun law revision thus to protect the NRA, and as an after thought....shut down the government. They create one crisis after another, create one scandal (none of which they have so far been able to prove) after another, and one lie after another. Last midterm they promised jobs, jobs, jobs....they have produced zip. The time has come to shut the GOTP down in 2014 on a permanent basis.

Here we go again. Potus can't possibly think this will end well. The best way for people to unite is to attack them. He should be talking to people he can get on his side to get his majority. Another failed leadership!

Pres. Obama said; “We have come too far, we've overcome far darker threats than those". How is playing the race card not the headline? Buzzwords meant to flame outrage by our president should be called out.

No Mr Obama it's time for you to start governing! Instead of fundraising, campaigning and going on TV shows . It's time for you to listen to the taxpayers and admit you don't know everything. It's time for you to quit playing the they don't want to do what I want them to card! You need to actually listen to someone else's point of view. That is what a leader does, unless your Hitler or some other dictator. You need to listen to all sides and then make the compromises to get everyone pulling the same way!

The failure of Obama to lead is, in part, due to the fact that he constantly criticizes and personally attacks the GOP and berates them - like Reid and Pelosi. Then he expects the GOP to agree with him. He has ZERO credibility and ZERO leadership skills.

Instead of defunding or delaying Obama care, I d vote to impeach him

After his second term, Obama will open his "Blame Everyone Else" Presidential Library

This is the correct behavior for Bumbo. Make a rabble speech to the black "awards?), rather than face the House or the Senate. Bumbo is useless as a President.

Damn straight Mr. President. The GOP are bigger terrorists than Al Queda could even imagine being.

It's like they are pretending Mitt won the election last November. I keep seeing Mitt saying "I will repeal Obamacare!"
    This is crazy.

I hope Obama will do everything in his executive power to thwart these domestic terrorists. If he can raise the debt limit by executive order, he absolutely needs to do it. he's working with a totally dysfunctional congress, half of which is trying to do the business of the country, and the other half out to destroy the country in order to destroy him. how shameful that in this day and age we have folks who can't put their love of country ahead of their hatred of a black president.

Mr. President, if there is not enough money to pay all the approved bills, then please don't pay for the tanks coming from Speaker Boehner's district.

He will get the message. And we don't need more tanks anyway.

  24. On the fence

    Hope you are all well,
So I was thinking a lot about healthcare. We all really need to have it, it is very important to have it and I understand why Obamacare was created. However, to me this is like putting a band aid on a gushing wound. I think about the endless things that people do that clog the hospitals and most can be prevented. here are some things that I think need addressing and we need to find a way to make people responsible financially for things they do.
Hope I am not too harsh here lol.

    1. drugs, and or addictions, we should help someone get clean once, after that they pay for everything.
2/ alcohol , people get ill from it, crash cars from it, hurt and kill others from it.. anyone who creates a situation because of their negligence should pay for it.
    3. Guns anyone who owns a gun needs to be responsible for it so that innocent people do not get hurt or killed
    4. Fast food.. people should have the right to enjoy a good burger now and then, but if someone lives on it and than gets health problems, well whose fault is that? If someone cannot control their cholesterol and high blood pressure and they don't try to eat healthy and exercise, and still live on greasy food well, tax payers shouldn't flip the bill for that. I am in no way including people that have problems that are not in their control.
    5. Careless drivers who cause accidents.. if someone doesn't stop at a stop sign and hits someone, they should pay for medical bills not the car insurance companies.. learn to drive and follow the law, this would reduce accidents.
    6. Risky sports, if you choose to play a sport where there are known to be injuries, then take responsibility for it if you get hurt. No one says you can't play the game, but realize that you put yourself at a higher risk of getting hurt, you take the chances you pay the price.
    7. Hiking and other recreational activities.. if you hike in the wilderness, or ski in an avalanche area you are once again engaging in risky behavior, like sky diving, or even skateboarding and trying to fly off a steel railing 4 feet high, and you fall, well you did the move so you did it too yourself, you should pay for the x rays and cast etc.
    8. People that have children, who can barely afford to survive, and than go out and have more kids, and more kids, who pays for their medical? we do..if you want to have a zillion kids you should have the means to pay for their health, I may get slammed for that, but that is how I feel. I love kids, but it doesn't seem right to keep giving birth if you can't take care of them, or expect "the system" to flip the bill. Now I understand people get married have kids, than split up, I understand that someone may end up in a situation they didn't see coming, it's the people that keep having kids and have no intention of stopping that I am talking about. Go ahead have a bunch, but then pay for them..

The list is endless, but all I am thinking is that unless we address the things that can be prevented, and do something to reduce the numbers of trips to the emergency room, money will be the wedge in Government. I just think we need to get everything straight in Washington about really fixing these problems.

"insisting that Mr. President implements some of the GOPs desires."

Obamacare is based on the individual mandate, which was a Republican idea (google the Heritage Foundation). Other compromises were made with the Repubs during the over year-long debate about healthcare reform. President Obama has done plenty of compromising – just ask any Liberal about their frustrations with it.

The GOP will continue to play the whiny, spoiled, infantile card (the only one in their deck), claiming the President is simultaneously "weak" and "a tyrant." Why? Because the GOP has NOTHING to offer our country except failed policies.

They don't have the stones to admit it, nor the character to put aside their own selfish desires for the sake of our nation and her future.
