Reid, White House were at odds over shutdown meeting

Washington (CNN) - As the clock ticked toward a government shutdown last week, the White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were at odds over whether President Barack Obama should sit down with congressional leaders.

According to a House Republican leadership aide, the White House and House Speaker John Boehner's office went back and forth over a time to meet to discuss averting a government shutdown – the plan was to meet this week, ahead of a Senate vote. The White House ended up nixing such a meeting, citing scheduling issues.

But the House Republican leadership aide, along with a Democratic source, said the meeting was killed after Reid questioned the optics of such a sit-down, and said he would not attend. Reid reasoned that if the White House really wanted to play hardball with Boehner, they shouldn't invite him for a meeting.

Aides at the White House were divided – some said the president should convene a meeting to show he's engaged, while others disagreed.

The White House has not yet commented on the back-and-forth with Reid.

During Monday's gaggle with reporters aboard Air Force One, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Obama was "likely" to meet with congressional leaders on a plan to avoid a government shutdown.

I'm a little nervous about the White House being willing to sit down with Boehner. The GOP has set the stage; let them suffer the consequences. Obamacare and the debt ceiling should not be negotiated, surely.

    I'm with you DD.

Mr. President, we don't negotiate with terrorists. Ever. If you back down this time you may as well resign because they will pull this same move over and over. They are already calling you weak. You must not back down!! Let some of that Kenyan blood pump through your veins!

Do not budge one friggin inch. These tea nuts made this mess, let them clean it up. NO CUTS, not one penny. These tea nuts represent the rich who have been winning for decades. They lost the election and they are going to lose the house in 2014.

No more dealing with Bohner, or the GOTP. As the TP (tea party or toilet paper, one and the same) used to screech–"NO COMPROMISE!" Let their ship finish sinking. And Abbey, why not get behind this country instead of trying to destroy it with simplistic lies.

Democrats were the ones that forced Obamacare on the American people. There are several people that are waived from enforcing it. Even the president has picked and choosed what he is going to enforce, that is wrong. The republicans have voted to keep the government funding, while holding back on Obamacare funding.

When did it become normal for a Senate Majority Leader to call the 60 percent of Americam citizens who disagree with him names? I actually hope he keeps doing it, makes me and a lot of us work harder to get rid of him.

It does seem odd that diplomacy worked in Syria, and now maybe with Iran- but it's historically been a wash with Boehner and the Republicans (as it was say during the creation of the ACA). Frankly, I'd like it if these guys would sit down and work something (anything) out, but the GOP/TP has been so absolutist (and frankly looney) in their positions that perhaps it's time to let them hang themselves.

Can you imagine these looney liberals if the republicans had 0 democrat votes and went ahead and forced a ridiculous proven failed law down Americas throats while giving special exemptions to republican groups

Let's get something straight here: we can't afford Obamacare and we can't afford more immigrants. If you can't feed your own family, how can you feed someone else's? Politicians work for us, and I think it's about time we fire them!! All they care about is getting more votes, not what's good for the voters born here.

I hope every liberal wins. I think that would tip the governmemt enough to implode under its own spending and wake the majority of Independant minded Americans who don't want all this waste and fraud

The President owes the GOP leadership (if you can call it that) nothing. Not his time, his attention and surely not his cooperation. He's done enough of that as far as I'm concerned. Let's just see what happens...

I agree, there is much more important things than playing golf. did you know that biden flies in a 700 series boeing commerical jet and it cost $11000 per hour to fly in fuel? when he plays golf with obama it takes 2 hours of fight time or $22000 . I think their golf games are not worth this kind of public spending, but I think obamacare should be negotiated because obama and his administration are public servants and as such they are there to serve the wishes of Americans and the majority of American are against or fear obamacare. "We'll just have to pass it then see whats in it!" What kind of leadership is that? I definately don't want dhimmitude attached to obamacare giving Muslims a free ride on the backs of non-muslims. things like this hiden in the 2800 pages scare me when they were only given an hour to read and study this bill.

This sounds to me like the meeting Russia Parliament requested with their American counterpart. Am not against most meeting but Obama should know the issues. Budgetary issues might be discussed but no 'Hostage' talks.
