Ted Cruz joins WH protest for detained American pastor in Iran

Washington (CNN ) - Sen. Ted Cruz joined about 20 protesters and members of different Christian churches outside the White House Thursday to pray for the swift return of an American pastor being held in Iran, reportedly for his Christian beliefs.

Pastor Saeed Abedini has been held in Iran and Thursday marked the one year anniversary of his detention.

Cruz called on the Obama administration to do more to secure the release of Abedini and other Americans being held in Iran.

The Republican senator from Texas said he is sponsoring legislation that would provide "two preconditions" to a meeting between President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. The first, he said, would ask "that Rouhani affirm Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state." The second would call on the Iranian president to "release the American prisoners who are suffering in his jail cells right now, including Pastor Abedini."

Following the remarks, Cruz joined several clergy members in kneeling in front of the White House and offering prayers for the quick and safe return of Abedini.

Earlier this week, CNN's Christiane Amanpour asked the Iranian president about Abedini's detention, as well as several other cases of Americans being held. The Iranian president held open the door to helping resolve the cases, but said it's a two way street.

"I would like to say that we also have people who are in prison here in the United States. And we have all – this is a sort of a mutual request. Um, the U.S. government, who must assist those Iranians, those people who are of Iranian citizenship, who are in prison here, as we should assist those people who have American citizenships that are incarcerated in Iran." Rouhani said.

Is Sen. Cruz proposing a prisoner exchange? And is that a wise move?

Get used to it – Ted Cruz is an empassioned leader and will be president. It seems that you just don't like brown people and are racist. As to the reference to Wendy Davis – Ted Cruz stands up for life and liberty. Davis stands for death and destruction of babies. Ted Cruz was reading Green Eggs and Ham to his children, Wendy Davis promoted throwing bloody tampons and feces on the legislative body in Austin while asking women to kill their babies to advance her cause.

What a coincidence that Iran just so happens to be talking peace and the Clown Car driver for the 2016 GOtP calls for "more to be done" by the Obama administration. Must admit, this guy is a genius, it's just not at governing.

@ tom I, with the exception of worthless Republican supporters, nobody can take you seriously when you support an overpaid weasel, like Cruz, who has access to excellent health care for free, and at the same time, support his message that everyone else shouldn't have access to government health care. Get real, hypocrite.

Gotta love the way the ultracons think that Cruz is some kind of hero – along with his little cloister of juggernuts who think that shutting down the government, destroying the nation's credit rating, and blowing up the economy is the next thing you do when an argument. Bravo. Now... prepare for political oblivion.

The difference is one is real and one is a fraud. Care to guess which one is the FRAUD. Hint: Not Wendy Davis

I am in complete agreement with Senator Cruz's generous offer to exchange himself for the hostage.

Seems we have yet another religious extremist simpleton who had deluded himself into thinking most of the country is as dumb and extreme as he is and thus he believes that makes him a serious future presidential. This posturing can only mean he is shooting for the top. Gonna be funny when he realizes his delusions are far from reality, just like Bachmann, Palin etc etc ad nauseum.

I certain Ted Cruz is taken seriously by Iran. He has sponsored no legislation – period. He spent his only year in Congress promoting himself. He read "Green Eggs & Ham" to delay America into a budget crisis – ultimately costing taxpayers billions and wasting the time of the Congress. He's just another Clown in the 2016 Republican Clown Car.

For me, I really don't care what happens to Bible-thumpers who go to foreign nations to conduct Evangelical missions – when they know the risks. Why should the U.S. expend it's resources to gain their release? What about Iran, North Korea, or other radical states is so hard to predict? Want to prove your love for Jesus by taking the risk? Go for it...

Flagrant opportunist. It's like running up to your neighbor as he's gassing up his mower and demanding in an obnoxiously loud voice (i.e. grandstanding) "you sir must mow your lawn!"

The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. Go! I don't care how. You can go by foot. You can go by cow. Sen. Ted Cruz, will you please go now! – Dr. Seuss

Amazing. They've been sent to the nations capital, and they are so child like. Looking for their inspiration from an invisible spirit residing in the heavens above. Maybe on this day the so called (creator), had his hands full with a child dying of cancer. Or maybe he was holding a parents hand, giving comfort while another child passed on. Maybe this all happened because their families had no insurance. But, those who want to deprive those on the lower rungs, can always pray for their current attention synapse. And the list of hypocrites get's ever bigger.

Just as it seems possible to to have talks with Iran, hit them with two irrelevant preconditions which serves to talk down to them. What an untalented politician this guys is.

Wendy Davis was real, in that she did what she did to support her cause. Cruz is a photo-op phony doing what he is doing to promote himself. Of course, you can't tell the difference from your bubble.

As if Ted Cruz, and/or Congress, has any right or authority to dictate terms to the President of the United States regarding whom he or she is permitted to meet with the head of any other State. Geez, Cruz.... please volunteer for that one-way trip to Mars.....

You might have a remote point if Cruz hadn't turned around and voted with Democrats afterwards.
