VA says veterans' benefits would stop in long shutdown

Washington (CNN) – The Department of Veterans Affairs clarified itself Saturday, saying that if a government shutdown occurs, and lasts at least a month, not all compensation and pension payments would continue.

“Those benefits are provided through appropriated mandatory funding, and that funding will run out by late October. At that point, VA will be unable to make any payments,” spokeswoman Victoria Dillon said in a statement to CNN.

The agency earlier this week said all payments would be handled.

She said the agency has excepted certain workers - meaning they can work if there is a shutdown. That means claims can be processed and beneficiaries can receive payments during a shutdown that lasts less than a month.

Among the benefits in question would be disability and GI Bill payments.

The change in position came after VA officials briefed staff members of the House and Senate veterans affairs committees Friday and other congressional staff who pushed for more information about the status of benefits if a shutdown occurs, one congressional aide confirmed to CNN.

The Washington Post first reported the call.

“Our nation’s heroes, who are already waiting too long for the benefits they deserve, shouldn’t be held at the mercy of gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, D.C.,” said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.

And yet, the dope addicts and welfare frauds would continue to receive their obamaphones, free healthcare and their food stamps while stealing the oxygen from our veterans. Thank you democrat liberals for shutting Dow our government to support your corrupt thug president.

Tea Party anarchists would gladly sacrifice the VA benefits we owe our veterans – to make political points for the right-wing. The Tea Party is more destructive to America than any terror group. We need to remember – the Tea Party is a Republican organization. I'll help Vets remember this act in the next election.

Isn't it funny how the Republican "patriots" in Congress are willing to risk disrupting benefits and pension-payments owed to this nation's veterans as part of an effort to deny expanded healthcare coverage to millions of Americans – including countless soldiers, veterans, and their families. ...

This article seems reckless and alarmist, at the expense of our nation's veterans. The last time the government threatened to shut down, it was clearly communicated that the Veteran's Administration would not be on the chopping block. If our disabled veteran's are withheld from their benefits, our nation would reach new depths of disgrace. I like to hope that this article, which seems to contradict itself, is being overly alarmist. If anyone should have their pay and benefits cut, it should be those in our government who are clearly not governing, but running a very long political civil war.

That's just great. I can live with out my disability payments for a while but I have a lot of buddies who are 100% disabled and rely on their check to get through the month. This has the potential to really screw up their lives!

Maybe the vets should simply visit an ER, claim to be an illegal alien, and then receive free medical treatment.

Active duty military should get paid before POTUS, Congress, SCOTUS or any other govt official gets paid. If the military men and women don't get pay or necessary medical then the political HACKS running our govt should get the same treatment. POTUS can NOT fly on AF1 a couple of times and use those funds to help our men and women in uniform.

That's great , send them to fight wars , then don't pay them there benefits ?

The funny thing is the VA is almost a socialist system when you think about it .

The GOP needs to think more about who actually defends our country when called !

  19. What's in that tea anyway?

Ok, I expected a hit to my 401K, but this is ridiculous. This just isn't right. I never thought the RWNJ's would push the country to this depth of disfunction. These veterans have made tremendous sacrafices for this country's freedoms, and this is how we repay them ? really Tea Trolls? disgusting to say the least.

Once again veterans and servicemen/women the teatards in congress don't care about the country in general.
The teatards don't care about your service unless they can send you to wars of lies and to die.
Keep voting repug while they spit on you, your sacrifice, your families and your service to our country.
It's all about them, remember that when you pull that lever or touch that screen!!!

Wait, isn't it the republicans who shout, 'support our troops' every chance they get? is this what they call supporting our troops????????????? 'thanks for laying your life on the line for us every day. here's your IOUl.' their hypocrisy has reached new levels, as has their traitorous behavior. the only good thing that could possibly come out of this is that maybe more people will wake up and see these monsters for what they really are. and what happens when republicans wake up? they become Democrats.

As a disabled veteran now is the time for people to wake up and see just what the republicans stand for. they are for the rich only. wall street, the big banks, the kock bros. big oil, the insurance co's. they don't give a damn about the regular people and veterans. yet there are so many people they have brainwashed with their lies that they will still vote republican even if they were being thrown out on the street.
