Moderate House Republicans failed to line up votes for separate plan

Updated 7:30 p.m. ET 9/30/13

Washington (CNN) – Moderate House Republicans who wanted to fund the government with no strings attached failed to line up votes against a House GOP plan to renew federal coffers while chipping away at Obamacare.

Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pennsylvania, Rep. Peter King, R-New York, and others feverishly made calls to stage what would have been effectively a revolt.

They said they were hoping there were enough GOP members like them who were fed up with the tactics of the leadership that they can find enough votes to defeat the first procedural measure, known as the rule.

That would have prevented the House GOP leadership from even bringing their plan up at all. Because the moderate Republicans failed to generate enough support, the broader GOP bill that includes anti-Obamacare provisions will now go to a final vote.

Given the makeup of the GOP caucus, the House Republican moderates needed 17 Republicans to agree to defy their leadership, and be willing to face what will undoubtedly be the wrath of the conservative grassroots.

"We have people in the conference, I believe, who'd be just as happy to have the government shutdown," King said. "They live in these narrow echochambers. They listen to themselves and their tea party friends. That keeps them going, forgetting that the rest of the country thinks we're crazy."

You consider that good journalism??? Holy cow you might as well put up articles that every countries government is revolting. TWO PEOPLE..... you're not even trying to hide your bias any more are you...

DKLK – before you insult others, make sure you get your facts straight...a Presidential term is FOUR years....they are sworn into office the January following the election.

To those who keep screaming that "ObamaCare" will ruin our nation...I ask that you offer examples as to who this is true. Just stomping on the floor and kicking the walls while repeating the Fox News and Tea Party lines does not justify such silly comments.

Let's face it, the Tea Party is comparable to Hamas or even al Qaeda to some extent in that the ruin of a nation is perfectly acceptable for the benefit of a narrowly structured radical idealogy. The Tea Party folks are not patriots, but rather terrorsts against the principles of the United States. The Affordable Care Act passed both houses of Congress, was signed by the elected President, and passed muster with the Supreme Court. It's as if the Tea Party folks are nothing but spoiled six-year old brats who don't like the outcome of a kids' game and demand to change the rules to suit themselves.

As for the claim that MSNBC and CNN are cut of the same cloth, think again. Yes, MSNBC leans to the left. Fox News leans heavily to the right. CNN is in the middle. That's just the way it really is.

saw someone mention that there hasn't been a budget passed in three years and blamed obama for it. i guess they failed to realize that there hasn't been a budget passed since the 2010 mid-term elections and the tea party put their crazies in the house. then again they'll claim there is no correlation since it doesn't blame obama.

Fekt. Wake up. The budget was 99 -0 in the senate . Obamas budget. Check your facts . It never was brought up in the house. Obama has never introduced a budget that was passed . Remember he had control of both houses for 2 years . It never made it to the house . Why do u think we keep having continuing resolutions? There is no "budget".

I think it is noteworthy that not a single Democrat voted with the Republicans who broke rank. It's disgusting. The democrats are absolutely giddy to see the Republicans making fools out of themselves. They are totally complicit despite having the opportunity to vote for everything they wanted, they would prefer to instead watch Rome burn so they can point the finger at Republicans.

Kelly deal, if you were referring to Tea Party nutbars moving to Canada, I should tell you that even if the U.S. agreed to take Quebec off our hands, it would still be a no-go. We really do like you, but not THAT much.

    Wrong and right....
There wasn't ANY vote, as the rank breakers need 17 from their Party to have the coup and..they didn't get it, so you are wrong on that.
What you are right on is the 2nd sentence..of course they'll be giddy to see the Repubs go down in flames, as the repubs would be happy for the same happening to the Dems.

Kelly, the House is in charge of finances...the Senate approves or votes down the budget the House does, not vice versa.
