1995 and 2013: Three differences between two shutdowns

Washington (CNN) - All government shutdowns are not created equal.

In 1995 and 1996, disagreement over federal spending levels between the Republican-controlled Congress - led by House Speaker Newt Gingrich - and then-President Bill Clinton led the government to partially shut down twice.

Very pathetic idiots of GOP, do they at least know these animals are making laughingstock? Very pathetic to defy every damn dirty thing. Shame.

In 1995, the Republicans shut it down over discretionary spending, which they directly control.
In 2013, the Republicans have shut it down because they don't want to fund legislated spending, which they do not control.

We Democrats are to blame for allowing this to happen. How many of you sat out the 2010 mid term elections? Gonna do it again next year?

Ok listen up people, we need to change the subject. Hear is what we need to do. In the 2014 elections we need to make that entirely about a couple of things and kick all these welfare case lawmakers out of office on both sides of the isle. This is what we need to tell those running against these welfare cases.

They have to guarantee they are running on passing bills to force term limits on all of Congress.
They have to guarantee they have to work 5 days a week 360 days a year minus 3 weeks vacation
They have to guarantee they will not get paid in a government shutdown or refusal to raise the debt limit
They will write a bill that guarantees they cannot invest in the Federal Reserve. These welfare cases get to invest in the Federal Reserve and every dollar that rolls out of the FR, their stock goes up. We need to end that.

We must make electing Congress about these kind of issues and get away from all the other issues. That is how they get away with messing with the American People. They make it about other things instead of themselves. Until we do this we are going to get the same beating every year.

"Ideological crusade"??? First of all – again – inappropriate language for the leader of our country. Second – we the people don't look at our congressman and women as on a crusade. Maybe that's how you see YOUR role as president – keep talking – you and Hilary just keep on revealing your true selves – no integrity.

this fight is very very different. democrats are living in the past as usual. this is about americans healthcare system, their families well being and it is downright personal. democrats have mucked with the wrong thing and hurt peoples' healthcare, their wallet and their jobs. democrats will pay dearly in 2014 and 2016. the obamacare train wreck is just starting. it will wreck the democrats as well as our economy, jobs and healthcare system.

There's a big difference between then and now. We weren't involved in meaningless wars, the country wasn't coming out of a semi-Depression and the president was white, approachable and viewed as "the president" in the eyes of the republicans. Easy fix THEN.

Obama has proven to the entire country is is not a leader and certainly not a leader that represents all of the people of this country. His is nothing but a bitter and partisan political hack that has nothing but give campaign speeches for 5 years while producing miserable results. His constant public political attacks demonizing anybody that opposes him are horrendous behavior for a President. The country has made a huge mistake electing this fool to two terms in office. The American people are becoming dumber and dumber thanks to their failed liberal, union controlled school systems.

I'm curious... How do all the single young males feel about paying three times more for their healthcare? How do you feel about spending thousands on a healthcare policy with a $1000-$3000 deductible? That is money you will need to pay before your insurance kicks in. Didn't Obama and the Democrats tell you all about this before you voted for them in 2012? I wonder why???? You've all been duped by the Democrat liars. You have voted against your own best interests and now you willpay dearly for it.

    @just asking,

"The Obamacare trainwreck is just starting"

Actually, the Marketplaces are just starting. Obamacare itself started 3 years ago.

    Where's the train wreck?

Meanwhile, can any conservative demonstrate an even rudimentary knowledge of this topic? Just a sea of blithering ignorance, man.

Wow, popping heads on the Right. Less sense than usual, and absolutely zero sense of responsibility for re-creating 1996. The GOP appears utterly lost, and their "followers" are matching in lockstep with whoever waves the flag.

Question to our friends on the Right: The GOP has been saying they were going to shut down the government since 2010. No one on the Left made that claim. Here we are, no budget, a Moby Dick-like focus on the ACA, and a shut down government. Whose fault is it?
