Obama issues debt-ceiling warning

Washington (CNN) - End the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling - even for a short period - and I'll negotiate, President Barack Obama said Tuesday in providing a potential opening to end a political stalemate that has partially shut down the government and threatens a first-ever U.S. default next week.

"If there's a way to solve this, it has to include reopening the government and saying America's not going to default and we're going to pay our bills," he said in a White House news conference on the eighth day of the partial shutdown and nine days before the deadline to increase the federal borrowing limit or face default.

I just hope we keep spending to the point of defaulting even with a CR... shouldn't take more that a few more years at the current rate... then the two party system will end...

@freedom "This president is overstepping his authority in so many areas, it's scary. It's also illegal "

Of course the Repub's completely creating a new 4th branch of government (Whiners) to subvert the existing 3 branches that properly negotiated, vetted and passed a law is somehow OK?

I think you could benefit from a little history and civics class.

well, I just listened to Cavuto – LOL – I guess according to them – they are saying that there is no such thing as a defaut – we aren't going into a default, because all you have to do is pay your interest. oh well, it is, what it is.

Just another example of how Obama and the Dums put illegals before American citizens. When you pick illegals before WWII vets, something is drastically wrong with this country

The consequences of the misdeeds of the president will be damaging to not only Americans, but to the world. This isn't about winning or losing elections. Try and expand your brain.
    *************
Once again, what misdeeds? Try using your brain before ordering others to expand theirs. And, by the way, its ALL about winning or losing elections for your lot. Everything in DC has a political calculus, and don't bother trying to claim that the virtue of the Tea Party precludes them from doing that. The whole Tea Party is a political calculation, one that has destroyed the GOP and threatens to destroy the country.

"The President decided to allow his friends to do what he would not allow others to do."

Did you miss the part that one thing happened after the other, not all at the same time, such that the initial problems at the WWII Memorial informed the Parks Service of the correct manner in which to handle the situation for future groups?

The only way your accusation would make sense is if it all occurred simultaneously. It didn't. Ergo, what you said is nonsense.

after watching Cavuto – he had this big business guy on his show – saying that there's no way this country could ever go into default, as long as the government pays the bondholders. ( psst : isn't part of our "bond holders" so happen to be : "china" ?? ) wow, the audacity of that channel !

Just another example of how Obama and the Dums put illegals before American citizens. When you pick illegals before WWII vets, something is drastically wrong with this country. How bout rounding up all those at this rally, checking their immigration status and deporting them. Sad that criminals can gather and make "demands:" and pols like Pelosi applaud them.
    ---–
Maybe if the Tea Party hadn't furloughed the INS agents, then maybe there would be someone available for the round up.
    --––
Gotta throw the BS flag Rudy, even if there had been no furlough, the INS still would not have "round up" the protestors....though I think they should take advantage of the situation and everyone that is not legal at the protest, and deport them.
    $

Sorry, have to throw the flag here too: Check the facts, deportation of illegals is up under President Obama. In order for it to go up more, more INS agents, judges and holding cells would need to be hired/built. That takes money, if government spending keeps getting cut, how do you propose to pay for it?

The Tea Party (Not lumping you in with them Wilson) demands increased deportations, yet cuts spending. As the Secretary of Explaining Things Bill Clinton says, it's arithmetic.

Guess who the world will be blaming if the USA defaults on its debts and a global economic meltdown ensues. GUESS.

As to expanding brains, I'm sorry, but the GOP/Teatrolls method of causing themselves encephalitis by wearing their tinfoil hats too close to a running microwave is actually a danger to one's health. I think we'll pass.

"We who did not vote for Obama are under no obligation to obey him, regardless of what he may think."
So, you are saying this is the way our country is going to function now? The debt ceiling is a recurring issue and we could have a republicant president down the road (though the way your party is going, that is NOT going to happen for a looong time) and I guess the Dems could do the same thing (though I doubt it, Dems tend to believe in the rule of law and follow the Constitution). Can you imagine the loudness of the whine coming from the republicants if the Dems let the country default because they didn;t get their way? Heck, look how loud you all are whining now when you KNOW you are wrong.

It appears to me that, and I can't believe this is possible, that the liberals on here are getting angrier than normal. Using terms like "hostage", "rebels", "traitors" and the like smack of desperation. If you can't understand that saying "I won't negotiate" is a problem, it just shows how dug in to your position you are. Clinton and Gingrich talked every day during the shutdown. Obama and Boehner speak maybe once a week. Simply ridiculous.

    In 1977:

The Democratically-controlled House continued to uphold the ban on using Medicaid dollars to pay for abortions, except in cases where the life of the mother was at stake. Meanwhile, the Democratic-controlled Senate pressed to loosen the ban to allow abortion funding in the case of rape or incest. A funding gap was created when disagreement over the issue between the houses had become tied to funding for the Departments of Labor and HEW, leading to a partial government shutdown. A temporary agreement was made to restore funding through October 31, 1977, allowing more time for Congress to resolve its dispute.

    and

The House increased education funding but cut defense and foreign aid spending, which led to a dispute with President Reagan. Eventually, the House reduced their proposed education funding, and also accepted funding for the MX missile. However, the foreign aid and defense cuts remained, and oil and gas leasing was banned in federal wildlife refuges. Abortion was also prohibited from being paid for with government employee health insurance.

    and

The House wished to link the budget to both a crime-fighting package President Reagan supported and a water projects package he did not. The Senate additionally tied the budget to a civil rights measure designed to overturn Grove City v. Bell. Reagan proposed a compromise where he abandoned his crime package in exchange for Congress dropping the water projects package. A deal was not struck, and a three-day spending extension was passed instead.

"The debt ceiling is there for a purpose. It's like the smoke alarm," said House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas. "Democrats want to unplug the smoke alarm, and Republicans want to go out and fight the fire."
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mainly, though, the Republicans want you to forget that they lit the fire with two unfunded wars, an underfunded Medicare expansion, tax breaks for all their rich friends, and a "see no evil" enforcement policy for the banking sector and Wall Street. And now they cry "Fire!" and squeeze the poor and the middle class for water - all I can say is that that's pretty darn convenient for the GOP and their soaking wet donors.

Personally I'm with the Dems on this one - let's switch off the smoke detector and make sure there really is a fire first, and then figure out the best way to put it out. No need to get everyone in a panic it it's just an oven that needs cleaning, unless a panic serves your purpose, as it seems to serve the GOP's.
