Debt ceiling deadline: Stop fixating on October 17

New York (CNNMoney) – There's still a lot of confusion about what October 17 represents when it comes to the debt ceiling and the risk of a U.S. default.

First, make no mistake. Congress should have raised the debt ceiling weeks if not months ago.

    Rand Paul said that we can make a promise to pay all of our debts, and everything will be fine. As crazy as this might initially sound, I actually agree with that statement. Now, let's turn his statement into motion. Just how exactly would we make a formal promise to pay off all of our debts?

    How do you go about doing that? Have we ever done it before in the past? Yes, we have. It's called raising the debt ceilnig.
