Mitt Romney gets his car elevator

(CNN) – Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney cleared a final hurdle Friday in building a new house in California, a house that will include a four-car garage with an elevator for the vehicles.

Romney had already gotten zoning permission from the city of San Diego to demolish the 3,100 square foot home he owns in the La Jolla neighborhood and erect an 11,000 square foot mansion in its place. Plans for the home were put on hold until after the 2012 election.

A neighbor had appealed the city's decision to the California Coastal Commission. He argued in commission filings that the new home would have exceeded zoning limits that say square footage cannot exceed a certain calculation based on acreage of the plot of land the house sits on.

The Coastal Commission rejected that appeal Friday. Barring a lawsuit, construction can now move forward, according to commission spokesperson Sarah Christie.

Romney, the multimillionaire former governor of Massachusetts, drew significant heat from his opponents during the 2012 election for his wealth. They charged that Romney's estimated $250 million fortune put him out of touch with average Americans and a car elevator crystallized that message for many.

Don't worry everybody, I checked to see how far the ocean will rise where this house is. The ocean will take out some of his backyard and will probably lap at his foundation. Don't worry, Republicans don't believe in global warming and oceans rising so Mitt's heirs will be fine.

What really put Romney out of touch with average American was his mouth because he thought he was better than most..

Yep, just like any other GOPer, Man of the People, who needs a GARAGE for his cars in CALIFORNIA. And all you tea baggers were considering voting for this guy against the awful democrats who want to give your momma, and your stepdaddy, and your "disabled" brother-in-law, and your five abandoned grandkids medical care?

To this day, I'm still not sure Americans felt that Mitt Romney was out of touch with the American people. He has problems just like us! Why, one time, his dancing horse almost fell down his car elevator.

Better for Mitt to have gotten a car elevator than a White House residential address. I can live with this one just fine.

Good for him... It's his money, his house and he should be able to do with it as he pleases... I certainly don't see the media going after celeberties who want to add exotic things to their home. Once again, because he is so hated by the left, this has now made headlines.

By building this home Romney is creating more jobs than Obama has in 6 years in office. Thank you Mr. Romney.

    OMG...
    A car elevator ?????
Most people can not afford the gas to put in a car..
But this is America and I hold no malice towards anyone who succeeds...that would be demeaning the rich and that is as unfair as demeaning the poor.

I didn't like his politics, but why is it surprising that a mega millionaire can afford things normal people can't?

With all that is relevant and important going on in the news effecting the people of this great country, you post an article about Romney's house construction on the front page of your website?
I would think the on average of 27% increase in health insurance cost coming at them, or the fact that NONE of those IDIOTS in Washington are "in touch with the average American" would have just a touch more priority.
    Just saying.

Coastal Commissioners, RIGHt ON!!! If América had elected Mr. Romney president, chances are that América would not be in the MESS that it's in.

For all the slackers who criticize Mr. Romney's wealth and determination, stop being so envious; GET A JOB!

By the way, I am NOT a Republican...

I wasn't upset at Romney for being rich. All presidential candidates have a good pile of cash.

I was disgusted at his disregard for the majority of Americans who are not rich. Saying that 47% of Americans are lazy money sucking slobs is what lost him the election. Rightly so.
