Rep. Charles Rangel compares tea party in House to 'confederates'

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel on Tuesday compared what he considers the most intransigent members of the House Republican caucus with the Confederates of the American Civil War.

The last-minute holdups on a deal over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, the longtime Democrat from New York City told CNN's Ashleigh Banfield, are not coming from conflict between Republicans and Democrats.

Rather, "this is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government. You can see it in the streets. You can see where they're coming from," Rangel said.

"The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it."

Rangel was asked to confirm that he was referring to the Confederates of the Civil War. He told Banfield, "If you take a look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over the Republican Party…"

To that Banfield pointed out that Michelle Bachmann, a major voice against Obamacare, is not a Dixiecrat but a Republican from Minnesota.

Can someone please explain to me why a group of people that have fought for years to protect unborns life and safety (abortion), are willing to destroy a country because they think that denying the living the same protections (healthcare) is a bad thing?

Those who seek to destroy our country will only result in destroying themselves. Always remember, never forget!

The worst US terrorist attack in the U.S. took place under a republican administration, but it tok a democratic administration to kill the terrorists responsible for that attack.

Most of the confederate states take in much more federal aid than they pay out in Federal taxes. Lincoln made a mistake by fighting to keep them. Get rid of them before they permanently destroy the Republican party!

Isn't it strange to anybody else that when a republican was in the white house and expenses weren't actually being accounted for it was no big deal and anybody who questioned it was called an un-American commie sympathizers? I sure do.

This is a false accusation ripped from the script of the regime. There is nothing "Confederate" about the Tea Party. The Tea Party simply opposes the desires of liberals. Opposition does not mean racist. Opposition simply means that we do not want the same things. That is what America is founded on. Dual partisanship. If you want one party to rule then maybe you should be a Nazi.

The only racists that I see are the racists in office ruling our country. This regime is anti-American and pro-Islam. Radical Muslims whom the wannabe dictator is supporting hate Americans, Christians and even gays. Wake up and realize that you're supporting trolls and haters.

Many of the areas where climbing the economic ladder is most difficult are also the areas with the largest concentration of African-Americans.

Once again when liberals can't make a case based on the facts they resort to calling everyone who opposes their views racist hoping that they'll back down. Don't want illegals to vote...must be racist. Don't want to give food stamps to people who buy lottery tickets with them...thats a race thing. Want people to work for what they have...must be a bigot. It's not going to work anymore...stick to the issues and STOP SPENDING.

How easy to name call Charlie. No solutions, just more taxes, more dependence, further big government as the solution to all our needs. How about instead of name calling consider what's best for America LONG TERM. Not just immediate gratification. You and I will be long gone but what have we left for generations to come?

ObamaCare is forcing many restaurants to put on hold expansion plans that could offer unemployed black teens entry-level positions. In September, a whopping 37% of blacks between the ages of 16 and 19 were out of work, the Labor Department says.

The Democrats refuse to even talk about setting a budget and living within it like every American family has to do. The Democrats will keep spending unchecked until they bankrupt this country. That is Obama's master plan. If Obama care is so great, then why won't the Democrats agree to let that be their health care plan. They know it's not worth having. How about thinking about taking care of the American people for and change, rather than spending trillions keeping up the rest of the world.
It's amusing the Charles Rangel is bringing up the Civil War Confederates. I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone make this a racial issue.

Why bother publishing Banfield's response about Bachmann? What is his incentive to rebut Rangel? And if you're going to rebut him, try at least to say something intelligent. Rangel wasn't saying that the Tea Partiers are all Dixiecrats, but rather making an analogy to the widespread switch of southerners to the Republican Party in response to the civil rights movement. Rangel makes a point that the Tea Party is not interested in responsible governing or in the process at all, but rather is opposed to the American system in general.

Shutting down the government in response to things not going your way is analogous to a child who has a temper tantrum and begins breaking things. Such behavior warrants punishment and is never justified, even when done by an entire group.

This phenomenon is not necessarily related to the South...it relates to the Libertarian wing of the Republican Party, the Tea Party wing...they are fanatics who want to rule the roost because they have been squelched so long by the GOP. Now that they've gotten a little power, they are trying to pull all the strings and they've got money to back them up...plus, they won't hesitate to topple GOP candidates who might be a little more moderate on occasion. The Tea Party does not seek compromise...they want to topple the United States government which they feel has become too liberal.

What John Bohner needs to do is grow a backbone and stand up to those Tea Party nutjobs! He should put the good of the country as a whole, ahead of what this might do to his political career.
