Rep. Charles Rangel compares tea party in House to 'confederates'

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel on Tuesday compared what he considers the most intransigent members of the House Republican caucus with the Confederates of the American Civil War.

The last-minute holdups on a deal over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, the longtime Democrat from New York City told CNN's Ashleigh Banfield, are not coming from conflict between Republicans and Democrats.

Rather, "this is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government. You can see it in the streets. You can see where they're coming from," Rangel said.

"The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it."

Rangel was asked to confirm that he was referring to the Confederates of the Civil War. He told Banfield, "If you take a look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over the Republican Party…"

To that Banfield pointed out that Michelle Bachmann, a major voice against Obamacare, is not a Dixiecrat but a Republican from Minnesota.

Why is the the USA so broken right now? I read this board and it becomes simple. The people are creating factions within the USA and are fighting each other instead of trying to compromise. The USA is weak when we are all fighting each other.

I have been voicing this comparison ever since the T party "grew" out of the outrage that some people felt about the fact that a black man was president. This faction of the republican party (and the southern democrats before they converted to republicanism) has resisted all federal laws that were aimed at removing inequality in this country.

The Tea Party folks who marched in Washington with Ted Cruz were actually carrying Confederate battle flags! Rangle is right.

Unfortunately, he significantly right and the bigots have tried and for the most part taken over the Tea Party state groups! That's why every 3rd party attempt has failed in the recent past, since the 50's.

I think the Tea Party is just as angry at Bush as they are Obama. And this is all about money – not skin color. I guess we will just wait and see who ends up paying the debt. The rich people – they will just leave the country when that time comes. Why would they hang around and pay a ton of taxes – they will make the whole US be like Detroit. And that includes rich black people too. So when that happens who is going to pay? I guess everyone who is left that has anything and by the time the debt is paid nobody will have anything.

"The south will rise again." The only way that will happen is when it stops asking for handouts from Yankees.

Go ahead Tea Party, you can have "your country back". Your party and its followers are bent on its' destruction. So you can have it; the hulking wreck that was once the most powerful nation on earth. It was not President Obama or the Democratic party that did this. It was you and history will record it just that way. Good Luck! As for me and mine it is time to go.

I agree in principle, Bob, but at the same time, shouldn't the greatest nation on Earth be the greatest for everyone? Countries with universal healthcare are beating us out in a bunch of categories involving public health, education, and overall happiness. I aspire to be rich, but there's still gotta be some minimum threshold or standard of living for an American citizen.

As to Bachmann, yeah, the crazies did migrate. Hilljacks from all over the country drive around with Confederate flags on their trucks. Morons.

At least the Confederates had the right idea, no more Federal Government diddling in states affairs.Too much Federal Government, they can play a part but not micro manage the citizens lives. I'm seeing on the news some states are picking up tabs to open some National Parks. And Obamacare is a bullet to the Middle Class or whats left of them. 7 Million people have to sign up and pay to make it work. It'll implode on its own. Look at California, the most Democratic state with 55 electoral votes, going broke. Pull up the poll results from last election, those in blue are the most broke and most violent there is.

The TEA party is a extreme – but I think if everyone knew our true financial condition they might join them. The democrats want to wait until they are out of power to pay the bills, the TEA party wants to start paying them now and the republicans are stuck in the middle – agreeing that we need to pay the bills but in a manner that is reasonable. I say just balance the budget and start paying something toward the debt. Anything – and BTW – if we didn't have to pay interest on the debt we would all have FREE health care and college education.

The Tea Party is a viable political force and what we are seeing is political theater at its best with the future of the country hanging in the balance. Of course the name calling is used to dredge up all sorts of stereotypes and disparage his opponents but it only goes to show just how bankrupt they are when it comes to real ideas. The fact of the matter is that this county cannot continue increasing the debt limit to support out of control federal spending.

He is correct. And that's the reason I left the conservative movement. because when the conservative movement got "southernized" and all the dixiecrats jumped ship to the republican party, the republicans were taken over by the religious right and the bible belt, and true libertarianism was chucked out the window

THe confederates did not want to bring down the governement. They set a new country with new government. Know your history, do not rewrite it.
    -–
The confederates wanted to perpetuate its peculiar culture of slavery, treating human beings no better than livestock, even breeding them like cattle. The south wanted to expand its evil to western states and territories. 650,000 Americans died to end that travesty. But it was worth it. Hat's off to Union martyrs.

Bob et al. it was the GOP who did this to the country, outspending anybody. Please get your facts straight. The Dems have been the only one to reduce spending by ending needless wars, trying to fix medical insurance issues that cost the rest of us who are living within our means, etc.
