Rep. Charles Rangel compares tea party in House to 'confederates'

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel on Tuesday compared what he considers the most intransigent members of the House Republican caucus with the Confederates of the American Civil War.

The last-minute holdups on a deal over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, the longtime Democrat from New York City told CNN's Ashleigh Banfield, are not coming from conflict between Republicans and Democrats.

Rather, "this is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government. You can see it in the streets. You can see where they're coming from," Rangel said.

"The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it."

Rangel was asked to confirm that he was referring to the Confederates of the Civil War. He told Banfield, "If you take a look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over the Republican Party…"

To that Banfield pointed out that Michelle Bachmann, a major voice against Obamacare, is not a Dixiecrat but a Republican from Minnesota.

The Democrats should adopt the banner of "If, as Republican sau Democrat are the Party of "Obamacare"; the Republicans are the party of "I-Don't-Care."

And we should let them go. Please. For the good of the country, and for the good of the world, the United States of America needs to split.

Was it really true that a man-in-the-steet interview brought the statement "I hate Obamacare, but the Affordable Care Act
    is good.

This politics stuff is just pure BS.

The "South" or "Confederates" during the Civil War were fighting against the Northerners led by a new political party called Republicans. Now Republicans think they represent the Confederates and wished the "South" would have won the war. Talk about hating yourself. Reminds me of the Republicans today shutting down the government and then going to Veterans sites claiming the Democrats are shutting down the government.

If it was a movie I would want my money back.

Consider the source. Rangel has recently been censured and found guilty of mulitple ethics violations and keeping undisclosed money in the Dominican Republic.

NOTE: It was democrats who voted against civil rights reforms in the 60s, not republicans, and yet he's accusing repubs of being confederates? Gimme a break

I would take whatever Rangel has to say with a grain of salt. Rangel is another useless politician with no ideas. Rangel just spends tax payer money and cheats on his taxes. Shame on CNN for giving this mongrol any time.

Typical racist comments. I am tired of Dems playing the race card!!!! The dems refusal to negotiate is the problem. The house has fully funded the government in multiple votes. Today was everything with a 2 year extension on the medical device tax and a repeal of the subsidy for congress under obamacare. But no the senate wouldn't even pass that. It's a sad day in this country. The republicans aren't with out blame but this confederate article is trash!! It does nothing but promote racism.

The Federal government grew from 18% to 22% of GDP under Bush. Refer to sly's 100% GOP yea votes for every budget. The GOP ought to be apologizing if anything. Throw out the TP'ers and get back to the nation's business.

All we want is not to be forced to buy health insurance – and now for only one year. Give us the same reprieve you gave to corporations, unions, fast food restaurants, and even Congressional staff. If you want to pay for health insurance, then raise taxes and make the cost fall evenly on everyone. But don't force us to buy products from your political cronies. If that political belief makes me a confederate and a racist, then I guess I am a confederate and a racist.

What lunacy...it's saddens me greatly to think that people are stupid enough to believe this crap. It's idiocracy come to life.

I greatly resent your comparing the Tea Party to the Confederacy. The men of the South were both intelligent and honorable.

Sly... you just don't get it... this is not a Republican thing... maybe these fiscal conservatives were elected as "Republicans" because of the way the system is rigged in a sham of two party Republicrat domination... now they are just showing their independence... they USED the party apparatus just to get into office. Now their true colors are coming out. Nobody who is worth their salt hates Obama because of his skin color (though some racist losers certainly do)... they hate him because he is a naked Socialist Marxist... liberate yourself from playing the race card and join (tea)party that Thomas Paine would be proud of... the Independence Party of Love of America.

Rep. Rangel is like many Americans: unaware of who is really running the country. It is neither political party.

The financial system is corrupted in such a way as to make it impossible to reduce spending. These politicians will make changes that won't solve the problems we face until we force them too.

Get ready for another bout of kicking the can down the road.

May I please suggest that all of us vote the next time? It's about time that the minority of a minority be shown what the majority of the majority can do.

My my. Finally some politician has the courage to call the tea party congress members what they really are ...CONFEDERATES!! They are traitors to this republic by bring about instability to the entire economy with this hostage of a budget impasse, shutting down the government, and defaulting on obligations.

Real republicans please reject these treason-like ways of the tea party and restore pragmatic governing. If not I think there will be some real escalation like 1861.

Sad to say Ted Cruz is from my home state. He replaced republican senator Hutchinson. I voted for her because she had common sense and yes I am a democrat. The whole state doesn't support Cruz. The hard core in north Texas got him elected. The state is changing I doubt he will be elected again. Many Texans supported the North during the civil war. Cruz represents the old dying breed in our state.

Rangel is a idiot and shouldn't be in Congress. He should attend some Sons of Confederate Veteran meetings and listen to the speakers and learn what that war was all about. It wasn't slavery either. I'm so sick of ignorant politicians. They all need to be replaced. Obama and others of Congress showed me today that they don't want what is shoved down our throats. We were treated equal and Obama, Congress and all federal workers should have to buy Obamacare. The unions should not get favors and treated different. I'm really sick of this mess.

I'd word it like this: The tea party minority of Republicans is attempting no less than a coup d'etat, to take over the government and destroy it. It's incredible that the majority of Republicans are too cowardly to stand up to them – but then we have Grover Norquist blackmailing ALL of them for years. Time for a strong third party perhaps.

Are you guys serious? You think this has to do with Black Skin? Or that this is about "the south will rise again?"

You race mongers need to grow up. We'll never get anywhere with race being the first thing you jump to when somebody disagrees with your point of view! Grow up!

Only one way to end a rebellion. We should start treating them like rebels. Impound all federal money going to their districts. Boycott businesses in their districts as well as Tea Party corporate sponsors. They want to bring down the government? Bring it down on them.

Reading the TEA LEAVES I see many 401k accounts losing +50% within a week because of about 30 individuals in the House officially in the Republican party but following the Hannity/Linbaugh doctrine.

The Tea Party was specifically named as the reason for the U.S.'s credit rating being downgraded. Now it's about to happen again because of... The Tea Party. Is there anybody who doesn't live under a rock (their core demographic) who doesn't know they aren't a real political party and are the creation of Fox News and the Koch Brothers? People who don't know or accept that are just being willfully ignorant (like people who think OJ is innocent).

The GOP is so weak, so fractured, so incompetent. And right when we need a second political party, Republicans go into mass hysteria.
