Washington (CNN) - The tea party is more unpopular than ever, according to a new national poll that also suggests that even many Republicans now view the grass-roots conservative movement in a negative light.
A Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday also indicates that Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the ringleaders of the conservative push to tie dismantling the national health care law to the funding of the federal government, has seen his popularity jump among tea party Republicans and drop among non-tea party GOPers.
According to the poll, which was conducted October 9 through Sunday, 49% of Americans said they have a negative view of the tea party, a slight rise of four percentage points from June. Three in 10 questioned said they see the tea party in a positive light, down seven points from June.
The tea party movement was born in early 2009 to protest the Wall Street bailouts initiated under President George W. Bush a few months earlier. It also opposed the stimulus and other economic and health care policies of President Barack Obama, who succeeded Bush in the White House.
The poll indicates the drop in favorable views of the tea party is not coming just from Democrats and independents.
"The Tea Party’s favorability rating has fallen across most groups since June, but the decline has been particularly dramatic among moderate and liberal Republicans. In the current survey, just 27% of moderate and liberal Republicans have a favorable impression of the Tea Party, down from 46% in June," a release from the Pew Research Center said.
Cruz has become much more visible during the shutdown and the showdown leading up the shutdown. And the poll indicates Cruz's popularity among tea party Republicans has soared, from 47% in July to 74% now. But among those who say they are non-tea party Republicans, the freshman senator from Texas and possible 2016 GOP White House contender's unfavorable rating jumped from 16% to 31%.
The Pew Research Center poll was conducted October 9 to 13, with 1,504 adults nationwide - including 655 Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP - questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

You think you hate us now...wait until we clean out the GOP and elect representatives with the cojones to do what we elected them to do. Obamacare is a disaster, and it WILL be reformed, repealed or de-funded.
When people finally wake up to the atrocities committed by this administration and the dems in the senate, there will be hell to pay.
Hope American people will learn from this debt debacle.... to VOTE for moderate... whether Republican or Democrat.... don't go extreme right or left coz you won't get stuff done.
Less than a year ago Republicans were pondering what to do to expand their appeal; and then they went ahead and did more of what makes them less appealing.
I really hope that the GOP doesn't try to run Cruz in '16 because he has zero chance of actually winning.
The GOP needs to move back towards the center a bit, be more moderate, and start pulling some of the independents again.
GOP may retain its red state stronghold. But thanks to the Tea Party, it will NEVER make any inroads into any blue states, will surely be kicked out in neutral states.
Tea Party, the Taliban of the United States.
One comment has someone saying the "Tea Partiers"are the only ones telling the truth!!!!!!You mean like the woman with a sign saying"TAKE THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF MY MEDICARE"??????The caracatures of our President making him look like Hitler. The kid with a rifle slung over his shoulder...They may not have been talking but they showed what they stood for and it was a lot of "Nothing".You want to get rid of our government......You only have to look around the world to find out what a country withourt some leadership to see chaos...If this is what you want......MOVE!!!!! GOODBYE!!!!!
The Tea Party should separate from the Republicans and become their own party. They are ruining the Republican brand.
The favorable number should be less than zero........need to chase these idiots out of town or make them go to a how to work in congress class.
I voted for Ted Cruz in the last elections. Next time I am going o vote for his opponent.
Tea Party=road kill 2014
CNN's representation of polls is really confusing. Its like why do we care if he';s popular within the tea party? We want to know who he ISN"T popular with and Who he's popular wiht thats not tea party related. So if His numbers are up within the tea party and the tea party is seeing unfavorably is OVER all he then unfavorable that seems to be what CNN is hedging around.
Thanks for the reply to Rick Mcd and his hyperbole. It's apparent that some people get their news and history from Fox news. Please read about what life was like for the old and poor during the great depression. Drowning government in a bathtub only benefits the super rich like the Koch brothers ( who also secretly been funding the tea party). It amazes me that people vote against programs that they need because they have been swayed by advertising. Sorry Rick, but voting like you are super rich won't make you super rich. You sound like the relative I know that falls for Internet scammers purporting to be the treasury secretary from Nigeria-gullible.
I'm glad they finally decided to end the fight that lasted too long and a lot of innocent people who suffered as a result of it can go back, and government can pay its bills. But this is a temporary answer to a big problem. Befor we know, January will be here and they will fight their childish fight again. At least, the tea party members were thought a lesson to know enough is enough.
I am an old GOPer, voted for Nixon, Reagan and Bush-41. But today's GOP is not the one I used to konw. It is full of cry babies who can NOT resolve anything with intellegence, dignity, power and wealth. The real GOP resolves issues during normal congressional sessions, not until the 11th hour. Only the Dems welfarers would behave like non-educated mobs in the congress.
But the Tea Baggers in this new GOP are worse than those non-educated welfare mobs. They are like bunch of spoiled stupid kids sitting on the Wal Mart floor demanding 100 pounds of candy for each. They ended up getting spanked by their parents then left the store empty handed with tears in their eyes. If GOP wants to be a respectable real national political party, drop these Tea Baggers, NOW.
It's interesting – the more the people learn about the Tea Party the lower their ratings get. The GOP needs to stop them from taking over Republican seats. If they are a Party then thet should stand for election as a party – they should not be infiltrating by ousting moderates.
