Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner saw his own members repeatedly rebel and refuse to follow his strategy to avoid a partial government shutdown and go to the brink of a potential default.
Unable to persuade a bloc of conservatives to go along with a fight that has driven GOP poll numbers down, some are calling him one of the weakest House Speakers.
But Boehner received a standing ovation Wednesday afternoon during a meeting of the entire House Republican conference. And earlier in the day a couple of key conservatives Wednesday dismissed any notion that Boehner was on the verge of losing his job.
Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio said "there's been absolutely no talk along those lines" when asked whether there were conversations about a leadership change.
Another conservative lawmaker defended Boehner.
"I've actually been very proud of Speaker Boehner the last two and a half weeks. I don't think that he should be ashamed of anything he has done," Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho told reporters.
Asked if he supports Boehner, GOP Rep Tom Massie of Kentucky, who frequently breaks with him, told reporters "he's our Speaker for this Congress."
Pressed if he'll be Speaker in the next Congress, Massie said "there's a lot of stuff that happens between now and then."

This is what Republicans are saying today. By this time tomorrow Boehner may have a knife in his back.
I don't think any of them are safe. I suspect unless the GOP purges the Tea Party element from their midst it will be the GOP conservatives that are going and the gerrymandered Tea Party will be a minor remnant of what used to be the GOP.
And he just promised to do it all again. He said, we lost this round. Get ready for more of the same in just a few short months.
The GOP is pitiful..... all of the threatening, posturing and lack of perception of reality will come back to haunt them in 2014 and 2016..... they only care about the super rich and the huge corporations. When the Koch brothers told them to, they capitulated big time.
