Democratic senator asks Obama to delay Obamacare deadline

Washington (CNN) - New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen joins the growing ranks of Republicans asking the President to extend open enrollment under Obamacare. The only difference is that she is a Democrat.

In an open letter to President Obama, Shaheen says because of the problems affecting HealthCare.gov, the administration should push back the deadline and lift the penalty for those who are uninsured. The law currently stipulates that enrollment in the Obamacare insurance exchanges ends March 31, 2014, and that those who are uninsured after that point will be fined by the Internal Revenue Service.

House GOP demands HHS briefing

Washington (CNN) - It appears the White House and House Republicans are engaged in a bitter game of telephone.

The spat started when word spread that House Democrats would receive a briefing from the Department of Health and Human Services on the Affordable Care Act. Michael Hash, who leads the HHS Office of Health Reform, will meet with the Democratic caucus at their weekly meeting to discuss Obamacare's rollout - the first administration official to brief Congress since healthcare.gov launched on October 1.

NYC mayoral candidates agree, when not talking over each other

Updated 9:44 p.m. ET, 10/22/2013

(CNN) – New York City mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota actually managed to agree with one another on several points during a Tuesday-night debate that was often amicable. When it wasn’t amicable however, sparks flew.

One of the most intense points of contention came on public safety. Lhota, a Republican and the former head of the city transit authority, favors the controversial stop-and-frisk policing tactics of outgoing independent Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He also put out a web video charging that de Blasio would make city streets less safe.

HHS chief: President didn't know of Obamacare website woes beforehand

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama didn't know about the problems with the Affordable Care Act's website - despite complaints from insurance companies and the site's crashing during a test run - until days into its now well-documented abysmal launch, the nation's health chief told CNN on Tuesday.

In an exclusive interview with CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius admitted Tuesday that there is significant concern in her department and the White House over the technical debacle surrounding the Obamacare website's rollout. The site was supposed to make it simple for people to search and sign-up for new health care policies starting on October 1, but instead it's been clunky and, at times, inoperable.

Watch part two of Dr. Sanjay Gupta's interview here. Part one is above.

Paul Ryan: HHS secretary should step down over Obamacare

(CNN) - Rep. Paul Ryan on Tuesday joined a growing list of Republicans who want Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to step down over rampant problems in the launch of Obamacare’s HealthCare.gov.

The 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee was on a conference call with reporters, helping fellow Republican and Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli make the case against a Medicaid expansion in the state championed by Cuccinelli’s opponent, Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

FBI agents search office of Florida doctor known as Sen. Menendez's donor

(CNN) - Federal agents on Tuesday raided a South Florida office of Dr. Salomon Melgen, an eye doctor whose past issues with authorities had already entangled Sen. Robert Menendez.

With yellow crime tape strung up outside, men and women lugged box after box of materials from Melgen's West Palm Beach office into awaiting minivans. Both members of the federal Health and Human Services department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation took part in the search, which FBI Special Agent Michael Leverock said was the second at the same Melgen clinic - the other coming last January.

HHS HITS BACK, ANNOUNCES TECHNOLOGY ‘SURGE’: Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, announces “a tech surge to continue to improve the consumer experience on HealthCare.gov: “We are bringing management expert and former CEO and Chairman of two publicly traded companies Jeff Zients on board to work in close cooperation with our HHS team to provide management advice and counsel to the project. … We have secured additional staff and commitments from our contractors, including CGI, the lead firm responsible for the federally facilitated marketplace technology. They are providing and directing the additional resources needed for this project within the provisions of their existing contract.”

OBAMA TECHIE: BLAME THE CONTRACTORS: CLAY JOHNSON, IN A BLOG POST: “The contractors who made this website were at best sloppy, and at worst unqualified for the job. … Healthcare.gov got this way not because of incompetence or sloppiness of an individual vendor, but because of a deeply engrained and malignant cancer that's eating away at the federal government's ability to provide effective online services.”

CNN Poll: GOP & tea party unfavorables at all-time highs

Washington (CNN) - A new national poll provides more evidence of the political hit the Republican Party, the tea party movement, and House Speaker John Boehner took over the government shutdown.

According to a CNN/ORC International survey released Tuesday, 64% of Americans say they have an unfavorable view of the GOP, an all-time high dating back to 1992 when CNN first asked the question. Only three in 10 say they hold a favorable view of the party.

No. 2 House Democrat says easy for Republicans to lose control of the House

Washington (CNN) - The number two House Democrat predicted Tuesday that after plummeting poll numbers following a two week government shutdown it's easy to see how Republicans could lose control of the House of Representatives in 2014.

Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer recounted a conversation to reporters on Capitol Hill that he had recently with Charlie Cook, a top political handicapper who publishes regular analysis of congressional races across the country in the Cook Political Report.
