Pelosi pushes back on extending health care enrollment

Washington (CNN) - The top Democrat in the House is pushing back against calls to extend open enrollment in the new health care exchanges because of the massive technical problems plaguing HealthCare.gov.

"I don't support that," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday morning, just hours after Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire appeared to be the first Democrat in Congress to join a growing number of her Republican colleagues in suggesting the deadline be pushed back.

The current law stipulates that enrollment in the insurance exchanges set up by the Affordable Care Act ends on March 31, 2014. Those who are uninsured after that point face fines by the Internal Revenue Service.

"As website glitches persist, we are losing valuable time to educate and enroll people in insurance plans," Shaheen wrote in a letter to President Barack Obama. "I also fear that people that have tried, and failed, to enroll online may become frustrated and not return to the website to try again at a later date... Allowing extra time for consumers is critically important so they have the opportunity to become familiar with the website, survey their options and enroll."

When asked by CNN Senior Congressional Producer Deirdre Walsh, Pelosi said she disagreed with Shaheen, adding that "I think we should fix what we have. Move forward with the deadline we have, respectful of what her (Shaheen's) experience may be, of her suggestion, but not supportive of it."

Pelosi also told reporters on Capitol Hill that she didn't hear any members who took part in a closed door meeting of House Democrats and officials implementing the health care exchanges earlier Wednesday suggest that they wanted to push back the deadline.

But one senior House Democrat who spoke with CNN following the meeting didn't rule it out.

"I'm not prepared to say that now.  We're going to have to find out," said longtime Rep. John Dingell of Michigan, a healthcare reform patriarch, when asked about pushing back the enrollment deadline or removing the fine.

Shaheen faces re-election next year in a purple state but early polling indicates she's far ahead of her possible GOP challengers. Regardless of her push to extend the deadline, Shaheen does not appear to be a turncoat in the war over Obamacare. The Senator's letter to the President offers high praise of - and some patient frustration with - the law.

Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas also supports pushing back the deadline.

"The senator has seen the letter and supports the effort to extend the enrollment deadline," Michael Teague, Pryor's communications director, told CNN Wednesday afternoon.

Pryor, like Shaheen, is also up for re-election next year. He faces a tough bid for another term in office in a red state and is being challenged by GOP Rep. Tom Cotton.

Sorry, but many people (well at least the people that work) don't have days to sit on the phone, how are you suppose to compare plans, get all the detail of each plan, etc. Are there enough reps to handle that volume of calls, I bet not? Phone is just not feasible with something this big!

The people that JUST burned 26 billion out of the economy for the sake of Green Eggs and Ham are in no position to lecture anyone on cost and choices, but, that has never stopped them before. We have listened to the same matra of tax cuts and other right wing crap about how they were going to create jobs: they did not, consumer demand does. Please confine yourself to something you actually know something about: now, the big task is for you go and find out what that actually is. Good luck, and don't come back until you figure that out.

I only wish he/she/it would listen, but I'm not hopeful.

Are republicans keeping a running tab on the cost to implement the ACA? If they are, I hope they let us know when we pass $2 trillion for unfunded wars, $1 trillion for tax cuts for the wealthy, $1 trillion for an unfunded drug program, and $24 billion for shutting down the government. Then, and only then they will have a reason to complain.

Republicans need to STOP trying to save the American people and the Democrats from Obamacare. This train wreck and the train wreck experts that brought it to this country, the Democrats, need to be forced to imple, emt it all exactly as the law is written. No more waivers, exemptions, special deals, changes in enforcement. Force the Democrats to live up to the letter of the law they focred on us. Let the American people and this country experience the full destruction they have forced on us and our healthcare system. Then and only then will the American people begin to understand what the Democrats and their destructive leftist agenda is all about.

Of course, they will blame it on others and there are far too many ignorant people in this country to realize they are being lied to so this appraoch does carry some risk.

LOL – I believe our combat troops left Iraq last year. Bottom line, it lasted longer than one month which is what the knuckle dragger from Texas said. For that, you republicans need to man up, admit you were wrong again, and start working for American. Your drivel is like the crap one would get from Hannity.

Is SHE going to have to pay fines for not signing up for Obamacare on a defunct website? No, she isn't. Of course she's against anything that would be fair, logical, and less painful for the America people. That is her track record.

Signing up was supposed to be the easy part. The real problems come with the actual implementation of Obamacare. The electorate will not be very happy with the Democrats and Obama 12 months from now
    -------------------------------------------------
We've moved into phase to of the ObamaScare-athon folks!
Now it appears that the bomb that is set to go off during the actual implementation of Obamacare.
I thought that Obamacare was being implemented in stages since 2010....

Have you tried it? Do you have any first hand knowledge? No? Then I suggest you have nothing to add other than assumptions, presumptions and cynicism. And you have until March 2014, so don't tell me people don't have time to make an effort. Also, they are hiring more staff for it. Fact is, you're just hellbent on trying to discourage people from trying because you want there to be problems.

Her track record would explain how she got re-elected as Governor of KS, an overwhelmingly red state, prior to her accepting the appointment to HHS. She's a technocrat, not the sort of ideological flunkie the GOP picks to run something. What was fair logical and less painful about the 26 Billion the GOP flushed so Cruz could read Dr, Seuss?Know a few facts before you spout your worthless opinion: it might help you look a little less foolish.

LOL – You're sounding nlike that couple who was interviewed by Hannity last week. The one that complained that 'thanks to Obamacare' they were going to pay nearly 10 thousand for their insurance per year, although they admitted that they had not tried it (nor would they, ever, per their own admission).
Then a reporter did a try and found out that a couple like them, living in that state and all other coincidences possible present, could get a good plan (at least a good as the one that would cost them nearly 10K/year) for less than 4K.
    Don't believe me? Google it.
    Or try the phone number.
It's SOOOOOOOOOOO easy to say 'won't gonna work' without even trying.

    Correct Sniffit.
It didn't take me too long to catch on to that. It has NEVER been about them seeking to inform themselves or have meaningful exchanges on tihis thread, which is why my responses are generally not as "charitable" as say Rudy's and Lynda's.
The usual rwnj suspects that post on this thread are merely seeking to keep self-created nontroversies (bill me later Sniffit!) alive, and to propagate misinformation.
It is somewhat entertaining but mostly irritating to see them doggedly trying to pit their non-factual talking points against the facts presented by you, Data, Rudy and the rest of the team......
    But mostly it is pathetic.
I have no patience for it.
    Thank God for you guys.
