(CNN) - Ultra-wealthy hedge fund manager and liberal champion George Soros has thrown his weight behind the nascent campaign to push Hillary Clinton into the White House.
Ready for Hillary PAC – one of two organizations dedicated to building a campaign apparatus for the former first lady, senator, and secretary of state even before she officially decides to run – announced via Twitter Thursday that Soros had joined their team.
According to the tweet, Soros will co-chair the group’s national finance council.
Financially, Soros’s involvement is a major boon to the organization. The multibillionaire has a long history of supporting liberal causes. Among other things, he founded the Open Society Foundation, which is dedicated to building “vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people.”
Soros has given millions of dollars to Democratic causes. In 2012, he donated $2.6 million to a trio of organizations, according to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics. Soros gave $1 million to both the liberal super PAC Priorities USA Action and American Bridge 21st Century.
Politically, Soros is a lightning rod, and a favorite target of Republican activists and conservative commenters.
