Kerry warns U.S.: ‘The world will not wait for us’

(CNN) - Fresh off the plane from a whirlwind four days of meetings in Europe, Secretary of State John Kerry stopped by a progressive policy forum in Washington on Thursday to chide U.S. leaders for allowing the government to shut down.

“I wanted just to come here this afternoon…to reflect on the damage that events like the one we’ve just been through can do to the esteem in which the U.S. is held in the world, a key component of our national power,” Kerry said at a Center for American Progress forum.

Kerry, who attended a series of international summits in Asia during the government shutdown, warned that the United States must “be far more conscious about how our leadership looks through other people's eyes.”

“I have seen how our allies and our partners and those who wish to challenge us or do us harm – they are all sizing us up. Every day they are taking our measure,” Kerry said. “What we do in Washington matters deeply to them. And that’s why a self-inflicted wound like the shutdown that we just endured can never happen again.”

The former senator cautioned against letting politics “stop us from providing the leadership that the world needs.”

“We cannot afford to cede the best possibilities of this young century to others who have decided to be more disciplined than we have. The world watches us, but...the world will not wait for us,” Kerry said.

The shut down has confirmed to the world how weak President Obama is , as for foreign policies he doesn't have any.

Nah, John, the buggy website with its "500 million lines of code" [sic] is far more important than the damage caused by a near-default. Keep up, buddih, it's on the Ticker 20 times a day, it must be important.

Damage done to the U.S. with the shutdown and near default? The GOP doesn't care- they virtually all voted for default. That is what they set out to do! Treason and sedition!

Yeah, Obama calling for military action and forcing Putin to step up to the plate and offer some form of compromise that would secure the nerve agents without military strikes...that is just terrible and everyone watching was ever so disappointed in Obama working with Putin on that solution and failing to bomb the heck out of Syria. Yawn.

Yep keep sticking our heads in the sand and 'American superpower' will quickly be an obsolete term. Other than military, I can not think of a single thing we really are the leader anymore.

I am so sick & tired of party line bigots who sees clearly the wrong that's on the other side of the isle. Us against them mentality. Full of high thought that is against the will of God. Now let me ask you a question Mr bigot– what are we going to do to those that falsley led us to Iraq war? Instead of making inflamed statements with accusotory undertone, pray for our President & pray for united states of America. Stop dividing us with your rehtoric. Say things like we will make thru. America will survive her tests.

Ted Cruz isn't listening. He said "I would do anything to stop Obamacare" including another shut-down.
I'm telling you, this guy is not just a joke, he is dangerous.

well Mr. Kerry, you're correct, the world won't wait.....So, the question is this : what are you going to do when this all happens again ? I'm talking about in Jan, or Feb, or whenever it is......What happens IF Cruz plays this game again ?? Let's say he does his green eggs & ham thing again / and forces everything to the last minute deadline ? So, the world will see this circus again, and won't have to pay a dime to watch. THEN, after all the "antics" there will be another "back room deal" with a couple of congressmen, and someone will end up getting several hundred Billion for their State, then it's back to work, till the next "deadline" is.......So, here we go, "kick the can down the road"

wow... talk about denial and delusional. you have cornered the market on it! obama 'forced putin to step up"??? too funny. putin stepped in and took leadership making obama look like an idiot. and now he is able to keep his man assad in power as well. obama failed miserably on all fronts. and let me know how it goes with assad giving up all his weapons. more delusion.

This country has turned into a joke since 2008. A certain candidate in 2008 called Bush "unpatriotic" for adding over $4trillion to the national debt during his 8 years. Obama has added over $9 trillion in 5 years! The number of people on food stamps have increased by over 30 million! They've left Americans behind in Benghazi only to be murdered later! This is the first administration to spend their entire time blaming other Presidents and violating separations of powers by getting too involved with the legislative branch. The list goes on and on. Now it will take several administrations and decades before our country can ever hope to earn back the trust of former allies. Wake up, America, stay in school, and finally make educated decisions about our future in 2014 and 2016.
