Official: Federal health care site should be fully functioning by end of November

(CNN) - The Obamacare website, plagued by major problems since its rollout at the start of the month, should be functioning smoothly by the end of November, according to the official now in charge of fixing it.

Jeffrey Zients told reporters on Friday that an outside contractor will handle the task of resolving technical problems that have become a serious political flashpoint for the Obama administration.

"Healthcare.gov is fixable," Zients said on a conference call.

    It really doesn't matter when it's fixed. It will collapse under it's own weight. Let it roll and let it collapse. Then we can start over with more sensible reform.

    Color me a bit doubtfull on that, at least if the problems were as fundemental as have been described. In regards the "tech surge", it actualy takes time to get new people coming into a project upto speed on it before they can be really be usefull, otherwise they can do more harm then good. Secondly with what sounded like the minimal amount of testing done prior to launch, it's quite likely they haven't even encountered let alone scoped all the serious problems that may exist. Lastly doing these type of changes on a live application can be quite tricky.

    I'm not saying it's impossible for them to do what he is claiming but it feels alot more like a political rather then an engineering statement.

    Nevertheless, good luck to them. I don't like the ACA law, but whether to impliment the law or not should be a purposefull decision based on reason....not an accidental byproduct of someones bad coding.

    Funny how we use the cheapest IT firm for A website that signs people up for healthcare coverage which represents 1/6th our economy. How could this happen under the impeccable Obama leadership? Hahaha

    I keep saying in comments, any additional costs and overruns from the original job should be taken to court and sue that company and all those who took part in the development of this website. Get your money back. IF you go to a store, buy something and it doesn't work, you get a free replacement or your money back...period! Don't let this one go.

    It's hard to believe Sebelius blew it this badly with so much political pressure for a reasonable rollout.
    She's dumped a tanker of blood in shark infested waters.
    The more media exploration of Obamacare, the worse it is for Democrats.
    ACA was intended to cause a Death Spiral of private insurance with skyrocketing premiums making us scream for Single Payer. But Democrats never DREAMED of this kind of opposition 3 years out. Their cynical end run around the electorate, their attempt to sneak single payer in the back door is going to backfire.
    Instead of screaming for Single Payer, an Angry Electorate is going to scream for a GOP senate, Obamacare back to the OR for major bipartisan surgery, and Obama will cooperate or he will spend his last 2 years flapping and quacking on Lame Duck Golf Course. That is the ONLY WAY Obamacare can achieve the political legitimacy it must have for any chance of success.

    I hope it does get fixed so that we can see if it really does save most of Americans money.

    For my family it has forced us to not have insurance. we can no longer afford our employer provided healthcare. premera said it was because of the new laws in a letter. and we cannot afford the deductible and cost of the ACA, nor do we qualify for any help or tax credits from the ACA.

    I hope that it will at least help most of the USA. if it does not I want it fixed and made more affordable as the name says.

    it seems to be working fine here in Minnesota . My son and his family just signed up, said it went smooth and they will save $3000 a year and have slightly better coverage.

    Anyone who has worked on a large IT project, federal or otherwise, will know that there is a 0% chance that this will be fixed by the end of November. 1-2 years would be my estimate.

    Of the 37000 signed up in NY over 23,000 going to expanded Medicaid. This is going to be an economic disaster. If mostly high subsidy, Medicaid eligible and those with preexisting conditions sign up it will be a total disaster. Time will tell. Not looking good.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    They qualify for expanded Medicaid because they're TOO POOR to purchase a policy – even with subsidies! Most are working individuals/couples without children, and they're the people who allow basic ailments to fester until they become a major issue, at which time they end up in the ER at the expense of the rest of us. Or they show up in the ER for for treatment of an abcessed tooth or ear infection. If their employers paid them a livable wage or offered medical coverage, they wouldn't have to rely on the expanded Medicaid program.

    Ahhh yes, and how much additional TAXPAYER money is this going to cost.
    The original contract for CGI to build the website was $94 Million. Its already over 300M and dysfunctional. How many more hundred of millions is it going to cost?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    A mere drop in the bucket when compared to the TWENTY FOUR BILLION – WITH A B – DOLLARS the rethug/teabag toddlers pizzed away during their 16-day temper tantrum.

  22. ThinkAgain: Hey, GOP, where's our $24 billion reimbursement check?

    Here's what Obamacare hopes to provide affordable health insurance to people who:

    - do not have it through an employer
    - can not afford it on their own
    - were denied it on the basis of preëxisting conditions
    - paid more for it than they should have because they were, say, women of child-bearing age
    - could no longer get by because their insurance benefits had been capped

    Yes, the website has glitches – but since when does holding a hearing about it help fix it? The problems are being addressed and they will get straightened out. The time and money are worth it – and people will be enjoying the positive impact of having healthcare will have on their lives.

    Which is exactly what the repubs are afraid of ...

    Yeah, you can thank your red state governor and legislature for that – THEY'RE the ones who enacted new legislation allowing your insurance company to raise your rates by as much as they want whenever they want – and they ADMIT they did so for the sole purpose of making citizens HATE "Obamacare".
