Conservative group launching $2 million anti-Obamacare ad series

Updated 10/29/2013 at 4:42pm

(CNN) – Conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity plans to launch a significant ad buy against a pair of vulnerable Senate Democrats over their stance on Obamacare.

According to a statement Tuesday, the group says it will spend over $2 million on a series of TV, radio and web ads going after Senators Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.

Both women face difficult re-election campaigns in conservative-leaning states.

AFP says $1.7 million will be spent against Hagan in North Carolina and more than $500,000 will be used to go after Landrieu in Louisiana. The ads are primarily meant for mothers, the decision-makers of the family, the group said in the statement.

"Kay Hagan just doesn't get it," claims the narrator in an ad going after the North Carolina Democrat. "Instead of listening to North Carolina, Hagan continues to push for Obamacare," it charges, going after the subsidies granted to members of Congress and their staff by the Obama administration.

The ad attacking Landrieu admonishes that voters didn't want the law she supported. "Now, we are paying the price," it says.

"For millions of Americans, Obamacare has meant less choice, higher premiums, and the cancellation of health care plans they were promised they could keep," AFP President Tim Phillips said in the statement.

"And what has been the response from some of these lawmakers? Doubling down on a bad law, but making sure to give special treatment for themselves and political allies under the law. Our job is to hold them accountable for that."

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said they weren't worried by AFP's attack ads.

"It's no surprise that the same special interest groups that dictate a reckless and irresponsible Republican agenda have launched desperate and false attack ads in an attempt to prop up their struggling candidates in North Carolina and Louisiana," DSCC spokesman Justin Barasky said in a statement.

"No amount of special interest smears will change the fact that both Mary Landrieu and Kay Hagan have strong records of working across the aisle and fighting for middle class families and small businesses in their states."

This is not the first time AFP has gone after vulnerable Democrats over the health care law, nor is it likely to be the last. Last week, the group launched ads praising two House Republicans who opposed Obamacare and condemning two House Democrats who supported it.

Americans for Prosperity is partially funded by the billionaire industrialist Koch brothers, who have spent millions of dollars to back conservative causes and candidates.

Politico first reported on the AFP ad buy.

Shouldn't these "conservative groups" be using their $$$ to pay back the American taxpayer for their $24 Billion – WITH A "B" – temper tantrum? I realize $2 million is a drop in the bucket, but it's a start.

    "Continues to push for Obamacare"

Taking advantage of conservatives' ignorance, I see. Obamacare has been law for 3 years; there's nothing to "push". There is, however, a law to enforce.

"going after the subsidies granted to members of Congress and their staff by the Obama administration."

First, the administrative decision that this implicitly references merely made it so that Congress and their staff are treated like everyone else is under the ACA. It gives them nothing extra, nothing special and treats them equally to everyone else in the country, i.e., their large employer is allowed to contribute to their health benefits and, if they go to the exchanges and qualify for a subsidy, they can get one.

Second, the administration didn't grant them. Congress did when it wrote the ACA. The agency in charge of interpreting that provision of the ACA interpreted that provision as allowing Congress and their staff to be eligible for the subsidies if they qualify.

CNN is yet again writing things sloppily and in a manner that deliberately helps the GOP/Teatrolls further their mischaracterizations of the ACA and its provisions. IT's either that or they don't have the first clue what they're talking about. Which is it, CNN?

this is just the beggining democrats! obamacare is going to be the egg on every single democrats face. the american people will know exactly who destroyed their healthcare system, caused their health insurance to get cancelled, caused people to pay far more, the democrats and their incompetent president obama.

all of the blatant lies that obama and the democrats have told the american people over the last 4 years will be excellent material for campaign commercials. 2014 will see the democrat party of lies and incompetence driven from office in record numbers. to steal a good line from the movie law abiding citizen.... it is going to be biblical.

While the RWNJs are decrying that they have to pay for birth control pills, I do not hear women complaing about having to pay for the old geezers Flomax or Viagra. Wingnuts always want something for nothing.

There have been numerous point solutions proposed to problems. You must be too stupid to read and understand them. We didn't need to destroy the healthcare system to fix those problems. Then again, Obamacare was never really about fixing any problems. It was just another far left takeover scam with a side benefit of another new huge government healthcare entitlment program.

The World Health Organization ranks France No. 1 and Italy No. 2 in health and the US at 38th but number 1 in cost per capita. France has a single payer system. This is why Obamacare is going to have trouble. Obamacare is trying to have volunteer universal coverage with penalties if you don't sign up. A bunch of complicated rules had to be generated in order to keep it "private sector" and not go single payer since Americans would likely go ballistic with such "socialization" of health care. So what's better? Pay a penalty to the government for not signing up or have the government simply pay for the insurance? Either way the government is dipping into your healthcare. We can learn from others but it appears our irrational fear of socialism and huge egos that prevent us from learning from anyone else gets in the way. Maybe the Duponts and IBMs of the country will wake up some day and realize a French-style system is in their best interest.

Sonny Chapman - I agree with you that there has been no talk of what the replace is going to be.

My method of replacement is this: have all the top 2% wealthy contribute into a non-profit medical insurance company that will cover those that are currently covered by Medicaid and those that don't have any health insurance. That would a way to get government to reduce spending on medical care. I just don't think that is going to happen though.

do either of these countries have open borders that allows 10-20 million illegals into their country who get free healthcare? of course not. comparing one country against another is totally deceitful because it totally ignores the special icrcumstances of each.
and who knows what rubbish goes into those rankings? all i know is that people from around the world come to the usa, not france, not italy, to get their medical treatment when their life is on the line. that is the only survey that matters.

oh yeah, france has a top income tax rate of 75%. i suppose you want that here as well? or is it 90%?

"For millions of Americans, Obamacare has meant less choice, higher premiums, and the cancellation of health care plans they were promised they could keep,". So whats your point? For millions of Americans Obamacare has meant MORE choices, LOWER premiums, and not be kicked of your plan if you have preexisting conditions or if your lifetime max has been met. This plan is not gonna be liked by 100% of the people so get over it. Remember Medicare part D? No one liked that when it was signed into law by BUSH and his hypocrites. The Grand Old Party memory is fading.

Donn- You're Double Right. I'm too stupid to read & understand the Repub. Health Care Alternative. You're also right that Obama & other Muslims got together one night & decided that over 45,0000 Americans dieing annually because of no Health Insurance was acceptable but that they needed to come up with a plan to fulfill their dream of Destroying America-Voila'-OBAMACARE based on how Romneycare destroyed Mass.

we shall see after the next two elections! obama and the democrats have purposely delayed or stopped implementation of obamacare for political reasons and the tremendous damage it will cause the american people and economy. but the time is now here for all the lies to be exposed, no more bs smoke and mirrors. the obamacare train wreck has started and the american people are experiencing it first hand with cancelled insurance poolicies, higher insurance rates, reduced work hours, lost jobs, etc.

obama and the democrats simply cannot out run the 4 years of lies and deceit they have used to con the american people. and telling more lies will only get more of you useless leftists tosed. so by all means, continue to lie to the american people.

Thank you for revealing what we have known all along. Rudy, Sniffit and the whole lot of Democrats.... old school commies! The Democrat Party needs to come out of their commie closest and be honest with the American people about yet who they are and what their goals are. Namely the destruction of this great nation the same way commuinism destroyed the old Soviet Union.
