Pelosi rules out budget deal without new tax revenues

Washington (CNN) - House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is ruling out any budget deal that does not include new tax revenues.

She was responding to a report on Wednesday in the Wall Street Journal that said President Barack Obama has signaled he wouldn’t insist on that condition.

"Our position is that we are going to the table in order to reduce the deficit, grow the economy, create jobs, end the sequester - revenue needs to be on the table," Pelosi said when asked by CNN about the report.

The article said Obama indicated in discussions with Senate Republicans that he could support a proposal to eliminate some of the forced sequester spending cuts, even if they were paid for without tax increases. Senate Republicans suggested the President was open to using savings from changes to entitlement programs, such as agriculture subsidies.

For the first time in four years a bicameral bipartisan budget conference committee met Wednesday to work on a fiscal blueprint to address federal spending levels.

Pelosi argued any proposal addressing the budget has to be comprehensive.

"If you're not going to have revenue who's going to pay? Granny on Medicare? That's not something we can accept," Pelosi said.

She isn't the only top Democrat closing the door on a fiscal deal without new revenues.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was asked on Tuesday if he would consider such an agreement and he said, "No."

The budget committee session in the Capitol lasted two and a half hours, but the meeting consisted mostly of House and Senate members on the panel restating their positions.

Many of them urged Congress to compromise, but there was no back and forth about any potential agreement.

The chairman of the panel, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, announced the committee won't meet in another open session for two weeks, stating that both chambers aren't scheduled to be in Washington at the same time until then.

Republicans should not be allowed to lower the deficit on the backs of those who have the least. But the town drunk said no new taxes. Looks like another republican shutdown.

CNN flipping it all upside down to make it look like the Dems are the problem. Paul Ryan stood up in the meeting and declared within the first 5 minutes that the GOP/Teatrolls would not compromise by agreeing to tax reforms that create new revenue. THAT is how this went down. The GOP/Teatrolls are yet again trying to dictate that "we get what we want (cuts) and you don't get anything you want (revenues via tax reform and closing loopholes etc)" as if that is how you open negotiations. Now, they have the MSM so trained and whipped and fearful of being accused of "liberal bias" that the only thing CNN sees fit to latch onto is Pelosi's RESPONSE to the GOP/Teatrolls' and Ryan's nonsense.

Another "Oh, absolutely" comment, Nancy. GOPerville wouldn't have it any other way. They're going to have to start calling it trickle up economics. Trickling from dear old Granny's pocket up, up and away to all those CEO's and such who just can't seem to get enough of granny's pennies.

Trickle down didn't quite finish the job for their "causes". They need more (and more and more and more and more) pocket change.

Time to end the Republican "cut-taxes-and spend" debt and defict machine.

    * Top tax rates for earners back to 1980 rates,
    * close corporate loopholes,
    * end big oil incentives.
    * Now that Iraq is done, that savings should be reflected in the Defense budget

Conservatives don't like women who stand up to them, women like Nancy Pelosi.

Since most conservatives are men, perhaps they feel she threatens their masculinity ... such as it is. I wonder what a psychiatrist would say.

""So I want to say this from the get-go: If this conference becomes an argument about taxes, we're not going to get anywhere. The way to raise revenue is to grow the economy.""

-Paul Ryan, today, first thing he said at the negotiating table

In other words, he and the GOP/Teatrolls have yet again attempted to define "negotiating" and "compromise" as "we're not doing anything you want and will only consider doing things we like." THAT'S. NOT. NEGOTIATING. IN. GOOD. FAITH. AND. IT'S. CERTAINLY. NOT. COMPROMISE.

Yea, lets go back to corporations taking money from people and expensive wars based on lies.

@Gurgyl-People making over 250k can afford hot shot tax lawyers that find loopholes to get out of paying more taxes. My taxes have already jumped 2.2% this year and I don`t make close to 250k. Cutting govt. spending, using sales tax, and taxing imported products is the way to go. Not taxing hardworking middle class folks.

  21. How About This First....

No more taxes until the IRS stops paying out over $130 billion every year in fraudulent Earned Income Tax credits.
No more taxes until the hundreds of billions in fraud is driven from Medicare, Medicaid and Disability programs.
No more taxes until you prove you can use what you get now in a proper efficient manner.

I simply cannot afford to work half the year to pay taxes and ask my family to eat hot dogs and beans every night for supper.

    -------------------------------------------------
    Indeed.
I've lost track of how many stories they've put up about the website problems, even though they are being worked on and resolved as we speak.
I've yet to see ONE story on what it cost us the taxpayers when the Teatarded Republicans shut the government down for no reason.
CNN headline: "Public may not soon forget healthcare.gov issues".
Well I guess not because you're keeping them front and center, with every utterance, and possible scenario on the subject.
Obamacare is going to work out it's kinks. The President will have his legacy, and in 2014 he will have a Congress he can work with.
Not you CNN, nor anybody else with deep pockets can stop this from happenning.
I also agree with others on this thread that it is just too bad that he cannot run for a 3rd term, because he would run and win.
Republican's heads will explode just like those little martians in the movie "Mars Attacks!".
We come in peace! We come in peace!

Last I knew Pelosi was not in control of anything. She is a nobody and calls no shots in the House. But she sure does damage to the Democrats with her endless calls for more taxes, more taxes, more taxes, more taxes. And all while asking for an endless credit limit to drive our debt to what? $100 trillion? More maybe? Doe she think there is no limit? Obviously not!

Here's a tax deal. Sell some healthcare insurance.

There is no easy way to know how many people have purchased ACA insurance policies so far. The WH refuses to let any cats out of the bag.

The following is a partial list I found and may represent the states with the least number of ACA enrollees.

Oregon zero, Kansas zero, Michigan zero, Alaska 7, Delaware 1.

Healthcare.gov granted Kansas about $900,000 for navigator services, and assistance is being provided in 430 Kansas locations with zero policies sold in the first 4 weeks.
